Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of New England, Vol. 2: With Particular Reference to the Denomination of Christians Called Baptists The powers of thinking and choice are so essential to all rational spirits, that without them no idea can be formed of their existence. A desire of the knowledge and enjoyment of the best good, also appears essential to their nature. Therefore, as finite knowledge is limited, finite spirits would ever be liable to err, if they had not some sufficient guard against it. And the best guard we can conceive of, is a clear, fixed persuasion in the heart, that God is the only fountain of all good and that every desirable good is to be obtained and enjoyed in the way of obedience to his revealed will, and nowhere else. That he is the absolute Proprietor, and the sovereign Ruler of the worlds he has made, is a truth too evident for any but madmen to deny. All nations have been forced to appeal to him, to avenge injustice and perjury, in order to establish any government among themselves. Yet how far have they been from a willingness to be governed entirely by him! He made man upright; but they have sought out many inventions. Objects of wor ship and forms of worship, even without number, have been invented by mankind; the folly whereof God has exposed in all his dispensations Yet self-conceit, self-seeking, and self-dependence, are still the ruining errors of the world. Book History of Connecticut Baptist State Convention

Download or read book History of Connecticut Baptist State Convention written by Philip S. Evans and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-06 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of Connecticut Baptist State Convention: 1823-1907 As early as 1674 some Baptist preachers of Rhode Island had begun to preach and immerse their converts within the borders of Connecticut. The towns of Groton and Waterford were the scene of such missionary work. Strenuous opposition was made to these movements by the ministers of the "Standing Order," and measures were taken to put a stop to such incursions. The basis of government of the state did not contain a single provision authorizing the legislature to enact any religious laws, or establish any form of religion or religious test; and properly speaking the attempt to bind these upon the colony was in itself a usurpation. It was only by a sort of preemption right, or squatter sovereignty that the Congregationalists had established themselves as the so-called "Standing Order." Yet the legislature, by general acts wholly void of constitutional sanction had empowered the town authorities to prescribe rules and regulations for public worship, and for the raising of parish rates for the support of the same. In Connecticut the right of suffrage was not confined to church members, yet these were so largely in the majority that they had everything their own way. Book The Early English Baptists Vol 1 Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Early English Baptists Vol 1 Classic Reprint written by B. Evans and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-05 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Early English Baptists, Vol. 1 The first attempt at a history of the denomination was made by Thomas Crosby. He was a deacon of the church in Goat Street, over which the excellent Benjamin Stinton presided, and kept a school in Southwark. His work is in four volumes, and is now somewhat scarce. Materials for a similar work had been collected by his pastor. These he placed in the hands of the celebrated historian of the Puritans. The unfair use, scarcely, indeed, the use at all, of the information by Mr. Neal, induced the author to write and issue his work. There is much valuable informa tion of men and events, of one of the darkest and most humiliating periods of our national history, con tained in this work. Crosby was probably conversant with some of the sufferers. His intimacy with the leading ministers in the metropolis was close. Keach and others had ministered to the church with which he was officially connected. From men, competent to speak, he has told us much which, otherwise, would have been lost. To the future historian this writer's work will always be of value. Next in this field of denominational literature appeared Mr. A. Taylor. His work is in two volumes, and was issued more than half a century ago. It is avowedly a History of the English General Baptists. It contains a mass of important information in refer ence to this increasing section of the body, especially of the New Connexion, formed principally by the late Dan Taylor. Many of Mr. Taylor's conclusions will be found more than vindicated, by the documents which will appear in this and the subsequent volume. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of Kentucky Baptists From 1769 to 1885, Vol. 1 of 2 The Baptists have been occupying the soil of Kentucky one hundred and ten years, and, with the exception of two brief periods, have been much the most numerous denomination of Christians in the State; yet, they alone, of the leading sects, have failed to have their history written, until now. The pres ent work is the primal history 'of the Kentucky Baptists. Some fragmentary accounts of churches and associations have been printed from time to time, but nothing like a' connected history of the denomination has been published since Benedict's epitome of its early operations was issued from the press at Boston, Massachusetts, in 1813.
