Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of Georgia, Vol. 2 of 2: Containing Brief Sketches of the Most Remarkable Events, Up to the Present Day India Company, for the exportation of a large quantity of that article, to be disposed of on their fiwn account, in the American ports. This mea sure produced that kind of commotion, from one end of the continent of America to the other, which the contrivers of the plan might have fore seen. These and many other similar designs, which have been noticed by almost every Ameri can historian, created a jealousy and hatred against great-britain. For the purpose of uniting in some general plan of operations in this critical state, of affairs, With the other provinces in America, a meeting was called in Savannah. But the powerful arm Of the royal government in the hands of a man of Sir James vvright's sagacity and talents, at the head of an influential train Of civil officers, pro hibited an open expression Of the public senti ment. Many of the most wealthy inhabitants, foresaw, that their pecuniary ruin would be the inevitable consequence of participating with the other colonies, in resistance to the aggressions of the crown. Another class composed of the dissi pated and idle, Who had little or nothing to risk, perceived their advantage in adhering to the royal government. A wide field for pillage would be Opened, and the strong hold of St. Augustine in East Florida, would furnish a safe and secure re treat for themselves, and a deposit for their booty, in the event of a revolution. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of Georgia, Vol. 2 of 2: From Its First Discovery by Europeans to the Adoption of the Present Constitution in 1798 The delay, however, has not been without its bene fits. It has enabled me to bring to my pleasing task greater historic materials, and a more matured judg ment; and thus, perhaps, I have written with more soberness, accuracy, and propriety than I should have done had I finished the work ten years earlier. As the volume has been written mostly from manu script materials, and as I have but rarely based my statements on the authority of published works, I have deemed it unnecessary to specify every source from which the body of the text is derived, especially as they could not be referred to by the general reader. In the preparation of this History I have had access to the Manuscripts and printed Journals of the Governors, and Committees of the Council of Safety, the Provincial Congress, the Executive Council, the two Houses of the Assembly, the Conventions of the State, the Meetings of Indian Commissioners, and other public bodies. This book was released on 2017-11-20 with total page 662 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Standard History of Georgia and Georgians, Vol. 2 Over a century ago, a bitter warfare raged between the Catawba and Cherokee tribes of Indians. In one of those frequent and bold excursions common among the wild inhabitants of the forest, the son Of the principal Cherokee chief surprised and captured a large town belonging to the Catawba tribe. Among the captives was the daughter of the first chief of the Catawbas, named Hiawassee, or the beautiful fawn. A young hero of the Cherokees, whose name was Notley, which means the daring horseman, instantly became captivated with the majestic beauty and graceful manners of the royal captive; and was overwhelmed with delight upon finding his love reciprocated by the object of his heart's adoration. With two attendants, he presented himself before the Ca tawba warrior, who happened to be absent when his town was taken by the Cherokees. To this stern old chief he gave a brief statement of recent occurrences, and then besought his daughter in marriage. The proud Catawba, lifting high his war-club, knitting his brow, and curling his lips with scorn, declared that as the Catawbas drank the waters of the East, and the Cherokees the waters Of the West, when this insolent and daring lad could find where these waters united, then and not till then might the hateful Cherokee mate with the daughter of the great Catawba. Discouraged but not despairing, Notley turned away from the presence of the proud and 'unfeeling father of the beautiful Hiawassee, and resolved to search for a union of the eastern with the western waters, which was then considered an impossibility. Ascending the pinnacle of the great chain of the Alleghanies, more commonly called the Elue Ridge, which is known to divide the waters of the Atlantic from those of the great West, and traversing its devi ous and Winding courses, he could frequently find springs running each way, and having their source within a few paces of each other; but this was not what he desired. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Savannah: Compiled and Written by Savannah Unit Federal Writers' Project in Georgia Works Progress Administration The authors of this book have caught the spirit of Savannah, and the reader will glean from its pages an understanding of that intangible hold which she has on her people, which makes them think of her with longing affection even after years of enforced absence, and brings within her doors time after time visitors who have once come under the spell of her charm. The easy, informal style of the volume differentiates it from the usual guide book. While its primary purpose is to introduce the visitor to the points of special attraction, it will prove of interest also to the armchair traveler who has no immediate prospect of seeing Savannah for himself.
