Book A History of Original Free Will Baptists Classic Reprint

Download or read book A History of Original Free Will Baptists Classic Reprint written by Michael R. Pelt and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-20 with total page 416 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of Original Free Will Baptists Original Free Will Baptists are the spiritual descendants of the General Baptists who settled in North Carolina during the colonial period. These General Baptists were the earliest Baptists to settle in the colony and were among the earliest organized religious groups in the colony, preceded only by the Quakers and the Anglicans. The story of these early Baptists has often been overshadowed by the accounts of other and later religious move ments which swept through the settlements of North Carolina and the rest of the region which became known as the South. Once this denomination had adopted the name Free Will Baptist and had begun to develop its own identity, they then began to preserve some account of their annual conferences, without which it would be impossible for one to know very much about them, apart from the oral traditions passed on from generation to generation. In the late nineteenth century there appeared two accounts of their history in North Carolina. The first was a summary account of their origin in this state, written by Rufus K. Heam about 1880, and the second consisted of a revised and enlarged version of Heam's account of their beginnings and a more detailed history of their pilgrimage through the nineteenth century, using abstracts of the minutes of the conferences during this period and written by Thad F. Harrison and J. M. Barfield. The latter was published in 1897 and served to inform a later generation of Free Will Baptists concerning their heritage. During the twentieth century more adequate records of this denomination havebeen kept and more attention has been given to preserving such materials, especially during the last few decades. In addition, research has turned up more information on the early period, including the colonial and the English General Baptist background of the denomination. As a result it is possible to give a more comprehensive and more accurate account of the denomina tion's history. For many years the author has had a deep interest in the history of Original Free Will Baptists. That interest, which beganof time the idea that he should undertake to write a history of the denomination began to take root and finally came to fruition following his retirement from the, college. This book was released on 2018-03-06 with total page 448 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Free Will Baptist, 1987, Vol. 102 It is my personal belief that The Free Will Baptist paper and the Press have played a major role in the growth and development of our various State Convention ministries and our entire denomination. Begun originally for the purpose of publishing a periodical for our denomination, the Press, through its bookstores, job printing, Sunday School lessons and other program material, does much more than publish a paper. Again, it is my conviction that The Free Will Baptist is a vital part of the ministry of the Original Free Will Baptists of North Carolina. Much promotion, information and education takes place through its printed pages. It is a primary means of communication among all of our people. Book The Free Will Baptist Vol 131

Download or read book The Free Will Baptist Vol 131 written by Darren Davenport and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-27 with total page 48 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Free Will Baptist, Vol. 131: March, 2013 In 1957 I was asked to join the faculty at Mount Olive Junior College to teach the courses in religion and serve as campus minister. Our third child, another daughter, was born in March 1958. Then in the summer of that year I was asked to serve as academic dean in addition to the duties I had already assumed and I served in all of those positions for the next four years. In one of those years I served also as vice president of the College while the president was on leave for further studies in higher education at Florida State University. Incidentally, I was elected in 1957 to serve as secretary of the North Carolina Convention of Churches and continued to serve in that capacity until September 1962. Those were challenging years as the College took the necessary steps to be accredited by the North Carolina College Conference in 1958 and then the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools in 1960. It was during that period that the controversy with the National Association of Free Will Baptists heated up, resulting finally in the separation of the Convention from the national body in March 1962, of which it had been a constituent member since 1935.
