Excerpt: ... under God, a means of doing much good in this town. When Methodism had been quite ruined in Yormouth, and the work was to be begun again, as already related, Mr. S. was one of the first and firmest members of the new Society, which he supported with all the ability and influence he possessed. His heart and his house were open to receive Mr. Wesley and his coadjutors in the ministry; his purse likewise was open whenever its aid was required. He became a trustee for the first chapel, as well as for the second, and was a principal instrument in the erection of both; and for many years after their erection, the chief management of their affairs was confided to him. Mr. S. was also steward of the Society in Yarmouth for a number of years; and for not much less than forty years, he was leader of one of the classes in this place. In all these stations he manifested such a zeal for Methodism, as showed how sincerely he believed it to be no other than the cause of God: And it is due to his memory to declare, that he was a good man, that he lived in the faith of Jesus, and died in peace with God and with all mankind. It is"n intended to eulogize every measure-which Mr. S. pursued with regard to Methodism. But it would betray a censurable want of Christian candour to be blind, merely on that ground, to the general excellence of his character, which reflected a lustre upon the paths of his feet for so large a portion of his happier years.--The death of Mr. John Sewell was attended with one circumstance which was thought somewhat remarkable at the time, riamely, the death of Mr. R. M. Boardman, deacon of the Independent Church, and of Mr. John Brown, late minister of the Baptist Church, both of this place: So that these three persons, whose united...

This book was released on 2017-06-14 with total page 853 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "With this volume the publication of A History of the Methodist Church in Great Britain comes to its appointed end. The project of writing it was initiated by the Methodist Conference of 1953, and the lapse of time since then has made it possible to include at appropriate points the results of the continuing research into the origins and nature of Methodism; but 'the chance and changes of this mortal life', which are bound to impinge on the progress of so complex an enterprise, together with the heavy involvement of all the contributors in ecclesiastical, ecumenical and academic affairs, have made this period much longer than the General Editors would have wished." -- From the Preface

Book Thomas Wride and Wesley s Methodist Connexion

Download or read book Thomas Wride and Wesley s Methodist Connexion written by Clive Murray Norris and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-02-20 with total page 215 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book highlights the life and writings of an itinerant preacher in John Wesley’s Methodist Connexion, Thomas Wride (1733-1807). Detailed studies of such rank and file preachers are rare, as Methodist history has largely been written by and about its leadership. However, Wride’s ministry shows us that the development of this worldwide movement was more complicated and uncertain than many accounts suggest. Wride’s attitude was distinctive. He was no respecter of persons, freely criticising almost everyone he came across, and in doing so exposing debates and tensions within both Methodism and wider society. However, being so combative also led him into conflict with the very movement he sought to promote. Wride is an authentic, self-educated, and non-élite voice that illuminates important features of Eighteenth-Century life well beyond his religious activities. He sheds light on his contemporaries’ attitudes to issues such as the role of women, attitudes towards and the practice of medicine, and the experience and interpretation of dreams and supernatural occurrences. This is a detailed insight into the everyday reality of being an Eighteenth-Century Methodist minister. As such, this text will be of interest to academics working in Methodist Studies and Religious History, as well as Eighteenth-Century History more generally.
