Book excerpt: Join author and historian Carolyn Barske as she recounts the history of Florence, Alabama through the lens of over 200 vintage images. On the banks of the Tennessee River, below the once-formidable Muscle Shoals in northwest Alabama, sits the vibrant community of Florence. In the early 19th century, the Chickasaw Nation ceded lands to the US government, and in 1818 the Cypress Land Company held its first auction. The town grew quickly because of the efforts of the company's founders, which included Gen. John Coffee; John McKinley, who later sat on the US Supreme Court; and James Jackson, whose imported Thoroughbred horses became the bloodstock for some of Kentucky's finest racehorses. Schools, churches, hotels, and businesses soon filled the streets. For almost 200 years, the town of Florence has continued to grow, becoming home to the University of North Alabama and people like the "Father of the Blues," W.C. Handy; Maud Lindsay, who operated the first free kindergarten in the state; and four governors in Edward A. O'Neal, Emmett O'Neal, Robert M. Patton, and Hugh McVay.

Book The History of the Kiwanis Club of Florence Alabama First Twenty Five Years 1922 1947

Download or read book The History of the Kiwanis Club of Florence Alabama First Twenty Five Years 1922 1947 written by David B. Beasley and published by Bluewater Publishing. This book was released on 2013-06 with total page 482 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The extensive research and work invested by David Beasley into this book is incredible. The history of the Florence Kiwanis Club chronicles the civic works of the club through the historical eras of times past as reported by the newspapers of the time. It is a 'must read' for anyone interested in how ordinary citizens and community leaders strived to improve their club, community and nation through the annals of history. James Engelthaler David Beasley's history of the Florence Kiwanis Club fills a niche in the history of this proud civic organization by examining in great detail the history and activities of the club as reported in the Florence Times from the 1920s till today. The material on the club is set into its historical context by the inclusion of major headlines from the paper that occurred at the same time, so that the reader gets a sense, not only of the history of the club, but of how the club fits into the wider sweep of history, both local, national and international. I hope all of the clubs will produce a similar history. Lee Freeman About the Author: David grew up in Jasper and Montgomery - He graduated from Robert E. Lee High in Montgomery and earned a BS in Pharmacy from Samford University in Birmingham; then with a Master's Degree in Personnel Management from Troy State University in Montgomery. He worked as a hospital pharmacist at Caraway Methodist Hospital, Citizens Hospital in Talladega, Veterans Hospital in Montgomery, Shelby Medical Center, and Eliza Coffee Memorial Hospital in Florence. He was President of the Alabama Society of Hospital Pharmacist, Hospital Pharmacist of the Year 1986, and an American Society of Health Systems Pharmacist Fellow and certified as a geriatric pharmacist. David volunteered in the Alabama Air National Guard and served six years as a Radiologist Specialist. He earned the rank as Technical Sargeant and was honorably discharged. David and Ellen, his wife of 45 years and a nurse practitioner, are now retired and loving every minute of it. Both are members of the Kiwanis Club of Florence. David is recently completed serving as Lt. Governor of Division 2 for two years and is currently Alabama District Lt. Gov. and Eliminate Coordinator of Division 3. Ellen is Secretary and past club pianist of the Florence Kiwanis Club as well as a Sunday School teacher at the First Baptist Church of Florence.
