Book A History of English Philosophy Classic Reprint

Download or read book A History of English Philosophy Classic Reprint written by W. R. Sorley and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of English Philosophy The purpose of this book is to trace the history of philosophy in Great Britain from the time when it began to be written in the English language until the end of the Victorian era. There are two ways of writing the history of philosophy. One of them sets out from the standpoint of philosophy as conceived by the writer; the other from that of the philosophers themselves. On the former method the fundamental problems of philosophy will be presented at the outset, and each step taken towards their definition and solution will then be noted; whatever is irrelevant to the main issue will be left out of sight, however important it may have been in the minds of some of the philosophers. On the latter method the subject will be approached as it appeared to each philosopher in turn, and the presen tation of definite concepts and clear issues will emerge gradually as the story progresses. Each of these methods has its own advantages and its own dangers. The former concentrates upon the essential, but it is liable to miss historical proportion by stressing certain features and overlooking others. The latter keeps in close touch with the documents, but care is needed to prevent the meaning of the whole from being obscured by details. Book excerpt: AUTHORITATIVE AND ACCESSIBLE, THIS LANDMARK WORK IS THE FIRST SINGLE-VOLUME HISTORY OF PHILOSOPHY SHARED FOR DECADES 'A cerebrally enjoyable survey, written with great clarity and touches of wit' Sunday Times The story of philosophy is an epic tale: an exploration of the ideas, views and teachings of some of the most creative minds known to humanity. But there has been no comprehensive history of this great intellectual journey since 1945. Intelligible for students and eye-opening for philosophy readers, A. C. Grayling covers with characteristic clarity and elegance subjects like epistemology, metaphysics, ethics, logic, and the philosophy of mind, as well as the history of debates in these areas, through the ideas of celebrated philosophers as well as less well-known influential thinkers. The History of Philosophy takes the reader on a journey from the age of the Buddha, Confucius and Socrates. Through Christianity's dominance of the European mind to the Renaissance and Enlightenment. On to Mill, Nietzsche, Sartre, then the philosophical traditions of India, China and the Persian-Arabic world. And finally, into philosophy today.

Book Introduction to the History of Modern Philosophy Classic Reprint

Download or read book Introduction to the History of Modern Philosophy Classic Reprint written by Arthur Stone Dewing and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-05 with total page 350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Introduction to the History of Modern Philosophy There are at the present time accessible to the English reader many excellent and comprehensive histories of philoso phy. And the only reason for treating the subject again has arisen from the h0pe that a more simple treatment would prove useful to those readers unfamiliar with the technicalities of recent philosophical systems. For various reasons the bistori cal side serves as perhaps the only broad and permanently valuable approach to the whole field of philosophy, while it is a firm conviction with many that some slight acquaintance with the development of philosophical problems is indispensable to their appreciation. This work is intended as an introduction to the subject, and is not the expression of a critical or recon structive attitude; it makes no attempt to trace the logico genetic development of modern thought, nor does it pretend to consider every aspect of historical development. Book English Philosophy a Study of Its Method and General Development Classic Reprint

Download or read book English Philosophy a Study of Its Method and General Development Classic Reprint written by Thomas Miller Forsyth and published by . This book was released on 2015-06-30 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from English Philosophy a Study of Its Method and General Development The principles which have formed the guiding lines of this Study can, in general, be referred to the work of one or other of these philosophers. To the writings of Mr. Hodgson I am indebted more particularly as regards the nature of philosophic method; to Mr. Bradley, in the general conception of knowledge and its relation to reality; and to Professor Stout, for the principle of the conative character of consciousness. A few other acknowledgments are made, on special points, in footnotes. My quest of truth amidst the conflict of philosophic opinion has yielded me, as definite outcome, at least the conviction that these - the experiential method, the fundamental identity of experience and reality, and the relativity of knowledge generally to life or practice - are equally essential aspects of it, and that the way to further truth lies somehow in their union. Some such 'voyage of discovery' as the present inquiry was a necessity for me before I could get a foothold for any more specialized investigation. This is my plea on behalf of what might otherwise seem, notwithstanding its generality, a somewhat ambitious enterprise. A portion of the following treatise has already been published in the form of two articles in Mind (N.S., vols. xiii and xvi). The parts that deal more especially with the subject of Method were, in their original form, my Thesis for the Doctorate in Philosophy at Edinburgh. The rest is new; and the plan of the whole has been remodelled. It is incidental to the mode of treatment adopted that there should be a certain amount of redundancy: I have sought to minimize this as far as possible. The index of the authors treated of or cited, along with occasional cross-references given in the footnotes, will enable the reader to bring allied passages together. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from English and American Philosophy Since 1800: A Critical Survey I ought perhaps also to say that philosophy here, in line with the purpose I have just set forth, is taken in a some what restricted sense, to the exclusion of certain matters which a history of philosophy might be expected to cover. For the most part I propose to deal only with those central and illumi nating points Of view which constitute a man's philosophy in the distinctive sense; and the special philosophical disciplines, accordingly, receive attention only as they have some pretty direct bearing upon this. There are, for example, technical developments in the realm of logic and scientific method, that many would rate as Of large importance for the history of thought, of which no account in detail will be found in these pages. Even in the field of ethics, and of metaphysics itself, such technical problems as are separable from a comprehensive philosophic outlook are relatively neglected. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Short History of Philosophy I have endeavoured to indicate the salient features rather than to give an exhaustive account of the successive systems of philosophy, and have attempted to Show the place and influence of each in the evolution of thought. I have included in the History an account of some German writers who, though not strictly regarded as philosophers, have exercised a powerful influence upon speculative thought as well as upon general culture. I have also devoted a larger space to English and Scottish thinkers than is usually assigned to them in German histories. Finally, I have sought to add to the value of the book by giving a resume of the progress of thought in our own country and on the Continent in the nineteenth century, and by bringing the history of philosophy down to our own day. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Short History of Greek Philosophy The main purpose which I have had in View in writing this book has been to present an account of Greek philosophy which, within strict limits of brevity, shall be at once authentic and interesting - autfientz°c, as being based on the original works themselves, and not on any secondary sources; interesting, as presenting to the ordinary English reader, in language freed as far as possible from technicality and abstruseness, the great thoughts of the greatest men of antiquity on questions of permanent significance and value. There has been no attempt to shirk the really philosophic problems which these men tried in their day to solve; but I have endeavoured to show, by a sympathetic treat ment of them, that these problems were no mere wars of words, but that in fact the philosophers of twenty-four centuries ago were dealing with exactly. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of Philosophy For us, with the records and resources at our present command, the history of Ancient Philosophy must be chiefly that of Grecian philosophy. It was there that, so far as known to us, speculative inquiry into the origin and causes of things first assumed a scientific form. That it first commenced there, is not at all probable. N o nation, it is reasonable to suppose, has ever existed, possessing any considerable degree of civilization and culture, which has not also exercised itself upon those great problems of human thought which in all ages present themselves to the reflecting mind. Egypt undoubtedly had her philosophy before the days of Abraham and the Pyramids India had hers. But neither in Egypt, nor in India, did philosophic speculation assume, so far as yet appears, a strictly scientific form; nor do we know what was, in the earliest times, the philosophy of either. Book History of English Thought in the Eighteenth Century Vol 1 of 2 Classic Reprint

Download or read book History of English Thought in the Eighteenth Century Vol 1 of 2 Classic Reprint written by Leslie Stephen and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-03 with total page 486 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of English Thought in the Eighteenth Century, Vol. 1 of 2 The plan of this book was, I believe, suggested to me by Mr. Pattison's essay upon the 'Tendencies of Religious Thought in England from 1688 to 1750.' I thought that it might be worth while to give a more detailed and systematic account of the movement so admirably characterised in that essay. The history of the deistical controversy, which is the chief product of eighteenth-century theology, has been several times written. The first account of it is in Leland's 'View of the Deistical Writers' (1754-6), a book which has still a certain historical value, but which shows of course the narrowness and unfairness of contemporary controversy. It is in no sense philosophical. By far the best account of the deists, so far as I know, is Lechlers excellent 'Geschichte des Englischen Deismus' (Stuttgart, 1841). Lechler is a very candid, competent, and painstaking writer; and I am glad to refer to him for more detailed accounts of many of the deists than has been compatible with my own plan.
