Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of England and Wales From the Roman to the Norman Conquest It will thus be seen that a Record of the words and doings of the heads of the people is a continuative Biography of the people themselves. Before the Conquest the chroniclers were sparing of their words: the Saxon Chronicle records the last years of the reign of Alfred the Great, thus - "899. 900." And the Welsh chronicler described a battle that led to a change of rulers in North Wales, thus - "Gwaith Carno." Happily, the events preceding the Norman Conquest are fully described by contemporary and other writers; but here another difficulty arises, namely, to hold the balance between rival authorities, and to explain why the Saxon writer should call a man "blessed," and the Norman writer should characterize the same man a "dog." I have particularised the course of the Severn, as i is the historic river of Great Britain. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Vast halls through which she leads her disciples the Dawn of I the New, the Less New, the More New, and the Most New (eocene, Miocene, Pliocene and Pleistocene). In the last of these halls, which is represented by a mere line on the geological ground plan, yet which may easily have had a dura tion of years, we at last find our fellow-countryman, the first human inhabitant, as far as we know, of the British Isles. In certain well-known caves on the south coast of Devonshire (kent's Cavern and Brixham) there were found some sixty years ago flint implements undoubtedly fashioned by human hands, along with the remains of hyenas and other animals long since extinct in the British Islands, and these were lying under a stalagmite floor which must have taken at least years, and may well have taken years, for its formation. It was thus conclusively proved that Paleolithic man whose handi work has been found in many other European countries, especi ally in the wonderfully interesting caves of Aquitaine, lived also, how many millenniums ago none can say, in the limestone caves of Britain. Besides these dwellers in caves and probably of an even earlier period than they, were the other Paleolithic men who have left abundant traces of their presence in the spear heads, flints, scrapers and other large stone implements which are often found in the gravel deposits of ancient rivers. This book was released on 2017-05-17 with total page 600 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of England, From the First Invasion by the Romans to the 14th Year of the Reign of Queen Victoria: With Conversations at the End of Each ChapterFifty-five years before the birth of our Saviour, Julius Caesar, the greatest general the Romans ever had, was in Gaul. He there heard a great deal about Britain, which was the name of England at that time, from the traders who used to go back wards and forwards for tin, and for some other commodities. From them he heard that it was a fine country, and when he saw its white cliffs from the opposite shores of Gaul, he felt a great desire to conquer it. He set sail from a small port or cove near Calais with several ships fiill of soldiers, and arrived before Dover; but it seems that the Britons had heard of his coming, and were assembled to prevent his landing. They stood in such great numbers on the tops of the cliffs, which are very high at Dover, and looked so fierce, that the Romans were frightened, and sailed away to Deal, where the shore is flat, and they could land more easily but the Britons kept sight of the ships, and, marching across the land, got to Deal as soon as they did. The Romans did not know what to do, whether to attempt landing, or to resolve to sail back again: however, they got their ships as close to the shore as they could, and for a time waited to see what the Britons would do. At last a Roman standard-bearer jumped into the water, and then the rest of the soldiers followed, and waded to land in spite of all the Britons could do. At length the poor Britons, who had no armour that was at all suited to withstand the swords and spears of their enemies, were driven off.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
