Existing English histories of Ancient Egypt were either slight. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Highly deserving of regard but I am not with out fear, that I have been unable to place such interesting events in a point of view, sufficiently conspicuous and im pressive. The reader, however, will easily conceive what difficulties I had to encounter, in traversing that wide ex tent of inquiry, over which I was una voidably compelled to travel. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of Art in Ancient Egypt, Vol. 1 The fact is that Schnaase follows a geographical order, which is very confusing in its results. To give but one example of its absurdity, he speaks of the Phoenicians before he has said a word of Egypt; now, we all know that the art of Tyre and Sidon was but a late reflection from that of Egypt; the work shops of those two famous ports were mere factories of cheap Egyptian art objects for exportation. Book Egypt s Place in Universal History Vol 1 of 5

Download or read book Egypt s Place in Universal History Vol 1 of 5 written by Christian Karl Josias Bunsen and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-22 with total page 840 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Egypt's Place in Universal History, Vol. 1 of 5: An Historical Investigation in Five Books Twenty years have now elapsed since I became con vinced by Champollion's lectures and writings, as well as by my own examination of the Egyptian monu ments at Rome, and particularly the obelisks, that the great discovery of the Hieroglyphical System would prove to be of the highest importance for the ancient history of Mankind. In analysing its bearing upon the course of historical research pursued in Germany and upon my own studies, three questions presented themselves. Is the Chronology of Egypt, as embodied in the Dynasties of Manetho, capable of restoration, wholly or in part, by means of the monuments and the names of its Kings? Will the Egyptian language enable us to establish the position of the Egyptians, as a nation, in primeval history, and especially their connexion with the tribes of the Aramaic and Indo Germanic stock? Lastly, may we hope, by persevering in a course of Egyptian research based, in the strictest sense of the word, on historical principles, to obtain for the History of Mankind a more sure and unfailing foundation than we at present possess? The scientific assumptions and views with which I set out in the solution of these three questions were, in the main, as follows. This book was released on 2017-12-14 with total page 438 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Popular Account of the Ancient Egyptians, Vol. 1 of 2 I have here and there introduced some remarks relating to the Greeks, thinking that a comparison of the habits and arts of other people, with those of the Egyptians, may be interesting; and the impulse now given to taste in England has induced me to add some observations on decorative art, as well as on colour, form, and proportion, so well understood in ancient times. And as many of the ideas now gaining ground in this country, regarding colour, adaptability of materials, the non-imitation of natural objects for ornamental purposes, and certain rules to be observed in decorative works, have long been advocated by me, and pro perly belong to the subject of Egypt, I think the Opportunity well suited for expressing my opinion upon them while I rejoice that public attention has been invited to take a proper view of the mode of improving taste. This book was released on 2017-09-15 with total page 414 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of Egypt, Chaldea, Syria, Babylonia and Assyria, Vol. 1 Naturally, in progressive studies like those of Egyptology and Assyriology, a good many theories and conclusions must be tentative and provisional only. Discovery crowds so quickly on discovery, that the truth of to-day is Often apt to be modified or amplified by the truth of to-morrow. A single fresh fact may throw a wholly new and unexpected light upon the results we have already gained, and cause them to assume a somewhat changed aspect. But this is what must happen in all sciences in which there is a healthy growth, and archaeological science is no exception to the rule. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of Egypt: From the Earliest Times to the Xvith Dynasty This history, however, does not aim at being a bibliography of the subject; nor has it seemed desir able to bring in theories or views which appear to have passed away, and not to need present attention. While endeavouring to notice everything that a student should bear in mind on each period, yet more Space has been given in proportion to new facts or new theories, pro and con, than to those which will be already familiar to persons who have read works on the subject. Similarly, in the illustrations, it has been sought to give such as are not commonly known, wherever it was suitable to do so. In this way this work is not only complete in itself, but may serve as a supplement, brought down to date, to the other histories that have appeared. It will be found to provide illustrations, later informa tion, and more chronological discussion than exists in the present histories of Brugsch, Wiedemann, or Meyer.
