Download or read book A History of Dartmouth Bible Church written by Rev. Dr. Neil C. Damgaard and published by WestBow Press. This book was released on 2013-02-08 with total page 139 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This history of one local church demonstrates the prayerful determination of its membership over five decades to craft a meaningful place of ministry in a spiritually challenging community which dates to the Mayflower Pilgrims. These members purposed to honor God by growing in their relationship with Him and one another through a balanced focus on worship, discipleship, fellowship, ministry, and evangelism. Throughout these years, ups and downs were plentiful, but Gods faithfulness and His joy were always loved by His servants at Dartmouth Bible Church. This history candidly captures those stories and turns the reader back to the Lord with thanksgiving for His loving presence among His people. Includes several appendices of historical data.

Book Waiting on the Spirit of Promise

Download or read book Waiting on the Spirit of Promise written by Brian L. Hanson and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2014-03-18 with total page 106 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Waiting on the Spirit of Promise is a study of the life and ministry of Abraham Cheare (1626-1668), containing selections from Cheare's works, and rescuing an important seventeenth-century Baptist from obscurity. Cheare has been overshadowed by other more celebrated Baptist contemporaries, but as the pastor of the Particular Baptist work in Plymouth, Devon, Cheare played a key role in the advance of the Baptist cause in the West Country in the 1650s. His Sighs for Sion is an excellent illustration of early Baptist piety. With the Restoration of the monarchy in 1660, Cheare, like many other Dissenters, suffered arrest for his refusal to give up preaching. Cheare's prison writings reveal both a sturdy faith in God and a deep-seated piety. Despite the fact that he was incarcerated in a series of "nasty prisons," Cheare used this time of suffering to deepen his walk with God and so provide a model for his congregation of Christian integrity and joy in the midst of trial. To the very end of his life, Cheare eagerly awaited further outpourings of the Spirit of Promise upon the Church and looked forward to that day when his Lord Jesus would make all things right.

Book Reclaiming the Oral Tradition of the African Baptist Church

Download or read book Reclaiming the Oral Tradition of the African Baptist Church written by David W. Sparks and published by FriesenPress. This book was released on 2024-09-09 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a narrative built on groundbreaking research, David W. Sparks traces the history of African Baptists in North America, particularly Nova Scotia, in Reclaiming the Oral Tradition of the African Baptist Church. His goal is to recapture and reclaim the oral tradition that once shaped the theology and spiritual practices of the African Baptist Church in its earliest days. Mr. Sparks defines “oral” as “the practices, customs, beliefs, and folkways of a people and community that are passed on by word-of-mouth over several generations.” As opposed to a collection of items in a catechism of religious and doctrinal statements, oral tradition looks more to the heart and the conversion experience. For example, to obtain salvation, “candidates” are to withdraw to a quiet place to seek the Lord in prayer, and wait to hear from God. They’re expected to persist until they see the blood of Jesus, which is central to salvation in the oral tradition. Running throughout the text are various biblical passages, historical sources, and theological themes that give weight, substance, and relevance to a once dynamic tradition. Mr. Sparks makes the argument that the present moral and spiritual state of the African Baptist Church is the direct result of the loss and abandonment of its religious heritage and oral tradition. It calls, therefore, for a return to that tradition: a call to a renewed focus on salvation, revival, restoration, and hope!
