Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of Congregational Independency in Scotland Fifty-two years ago, on the occasion of the jubilee of the origin of the Congregational Churches in 1798, a proposal was made that a history should be prepared, but although some materials were gathered for this purpose by the late Mr. Kinniburgh of Edinburgh, no steps appear to have been taken with a view to publication. It seemed fitting that the centenary of the origin of later Independency in Scotland should be signalised by an attempt to carry out the proposal of the fathers of half a century ago, and also to meet the desire which has often been expressed for a historical account of the Independent churches in Scotland down to the present time; and it is with this object that the present work has been undertaken. It will be found to consist mainly of a history of origins, and that most of the record here given deals with the various forms of Christian enterprise on the part of the churches in their beginnings. It could not well be otherwise, for in the absence of those ecclesiastical organisations which belong to other religious bodies, and which make their history more or less eventful, it is only in connection with some new departures in thought and activity that Congregational church-life affords materials for historical record. Download or read book Historical Dictionary of the Reformed Churches written by Benedetto and published by Scarecrow Press. This book was released on 1999-11-03 with total page 1122 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As its name implies, the Reformed tradition grew out of the 16th century Protestant Reformation. The Reformed churches consider themselves to be the Catholic Church reformed. The movement originated in the reform efforts of Huldrych Zwingli (1484-1531) of Zurich and John Calvin (1509-1564) of Geneva. Although the Reformed movement was dependent upon many Protestant leaders, it was Calvin's tireless work as a writer, preacher, teacher, and social and ecclesiastical reformer that provided a substantial body of literature and an ethos from which the Reformed tradition grew. Today, the Reformed churches are a multicultural, multiethnic, and multinational phenomenon. The second edition of the Historical Dictionary of the Reformed Churches contains information on the major personalities, events, facts, movements, and beliefs of the Reformed churches. This is done through a list of acronyms and abbreviations, a chronology, an introductory essay, appendixes, a bibliography, and over 800 cross-referenced dictionary entries on leaders, personalities, events, facts, movements, and beliefs of the Reformed churches.

Book excerpt: Anne Steele (1717-1778) was one of the most well-known and best-loved hymn-writers of the eighteenth century, and her hymns remained exceedingly popular until late in the nineteenth century, being reprinted regularly in hymnbooks throughout Britain and North America. She was the first major woman hymn-writer as well as the most popular Baptist hymn-writer in the history of the church. Despite this, she has been largely neglected as a subject of academic enquiry until now. This book aims to elucidate Steele's spirituality and to clarify her unique contribution to eighteenth-century hymnody. It takes an interdisciplinary approach, setting Steele's devotional expression in its theological, literary, and historical contexts, and providing comparison to other eighteenth-century figures. It uses archival sources to reconstruct her life and work, offers a close reading of her verse, and concludes that Steele made a significant and as yet underrated contribution to eighteenth-century devotional expression.

Download or read book Calvinism written by Darryl Hart and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2013-05-30 with total page 506 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: DIVThis briskly told history of Reformed Protestantism takes these churches through their entire 500-year history—from sixteenth-century Zurich and Geneva to modern locations as far flung as Seoul and São Paulo. D. G. Hart explores specifically the social and political developments that enabled Calvinism to establish a global presence./divDIV /divDIVHart’s approach features significant episodes in the institutional history of Calvinism that are responsible for its contemporary profile. He traces the political and religious circumstances that first created space for Reformed churches in Europe and later contributed to Calvinism’s expansion around the world. He discusses the effects of the American and French Revolutions on ecclesiastical establishments as well as nineteenth- and twentieth-century communions, particularly in Scotland, the Netherlands, the United States, and Germany, that directly challenged church dependence on the state. Raising important questions about secularization, religious freedom, privatization of faith, and the place of religion in public life, this book will appeal not only to readers with interests in the history of religion but also in the role of religion in political and social life today./div
