Book excerpt: Excerpt from Natural History: Of the Insects of China In presenting a new edition of the Epitome of the Insects of China to the entomological public, I have endeavoured to bring it down to the present state of the science. The former edition, like all the writings of Donovan, was arranged in accordance with the system of Linnæus, and bore the date of 1798. At that period the science of Entomology was in its infancy; but in the subsequent forty years the progress which has been made, has indeed been rapid. I have endeavoured to render the specific characters more precise, the nomenclature more correct (giving the priority to the oldest specific name), and the synonyms more numerous. The localities in many instances were incorrectly given in the former edition; and I have added many additional observations, either incorporated in the text or given as foot notes, omitting nothing which appeared in the former at all likely to instruct or interest the reader. Alphabetical and systematic indices have also been introduced. I dare not hope that this edition is faultless: I have endeavoured to render the beautiful figures of Donovan as serviceable as possible, and must trust to the indulgence of the more skilful specific entomologist. One circumstance may be mentioned which will, at all events, be deemed an improvement, namely, the introduction of numbers both for the plates and for the several figures on each plate. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Natural History: Of the Insects of China Of the Entomology of China little more is known at the present time than Donovan was acquainted with. It is true we continue to receive numerous boxes of insects from China, chiefly purchased in the shops of Canton, but, like every thing Chinese, there is such an absolute monotony in these arrivals, that it is almost impossible to discover in a quantity of these boxes a single Species which is not contained in all the rest. It is evident that a considerable employment is produced by the rearing of the Atlas moth and some other Species, and in the collection of the other insects which we receive in such abundance. The Chinese boxes are made of a soft wood, about 16 inches by 11 in size, and of a sufficient depth to admit a tall needle; a layer of butterflies and moths stuck close to the point of the needle is placed at the bottom of the box, with another layer of beetles, flies, 860. Closely packed together and stuck high up on the needles, the points of which are passed through the wings of the butterflies forming the under layer. Donovan well observed that the Chinese, like their neighbours the Japanese, are well acquainted with the natural productions of their empire, and Zoology and Botany, in particular, are favourite studies amongst them. Book Moth and Wasp Soil and Ocean Remembering Chinese Scientist Pu Zhelong s Work for Sustainable Farming

Download or read book Moth and Wasp Soil and Ocean Remembering Chinese Scientist Pu Zhelong s Work for Sustainable Farming written by Sigrid Schmalzer and published by Tilbury House Publishers and Cadent Publishing. This book was released on 2018-02-06 with total page 42 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Winner of The Sigurd F. Olson Nature Writing Award Selected for the CCBC Choices 2019 list Children's Literature Freeman Award 2018 A Notable Social Studies Trade Books for Young People 2019 Moth and Wasp, Soil and Ocean tells its story through the memories of a farm boy who, inspired by Pu Zhelong, became a scientist himself. The narrator is a composite of people Pu Zhelong influenced in his work. With further context from Melanie Chan’s historically precise watercolors, this story will immerse young readers in Chinese culture, the natural history of insects, and the use of biological controls in farming. Backmatter provides context and background for this lovely, sophisticated picture book about nature, science, and Communist China. “The first time I saw a scientist in my village was also the first time I saw a wasp hatch out of a moth’s egg,” writes the narrator of this picture book about Chinese scientist Pu Zhelong. “In that moment I could not have said which was the more unexpected—or the more miraculous.” In the early 1960s, while Rachel Carson was writing and defending Silent Spring in the U.S., Pu Zhelong was teaching peasants in Mao Zedong’s Communist China how to forgo pesticides and instead use parasitic wasps to control the moths that were decimating crops and contributing to China’s widespread famine. This story told through the memories of a farm boy (a composite of people inspired by Pu Zhelong) will immerse young readers in Chinese culture, the natural history of insects, and sustainable agriculture. Backmatter provides historical context for this lovely, sophisticated picture book. The author, Sigrid Schmalzer, won the Joseph Levenson Post-1900 Book Prize for 2018 for her book Red Revolution, Green Revolution. This is the most prestigious prize for a book about Chinese history, and the book upon which Moth and Wasp, Soil and Ocean is based. Fountas & Pinnell Level U

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Insects are seldom mentioned in history texts, yet they significantly shaped human history. The Silken Thread: Five Insects and Their Impacts on History tells the stories of just five insects, tied together by a thread originating in the Silk Roads of Asia, and how they have impacted our world. Silkworms have been farmed to produce silk for millennia, creating a history of empires and cultural exchanges; Silk Roads connected East to West, generating trade centers and transferring ideas, philosophies, and religions. The western honey bee feeds countless people, and their crop pollination is worth billions of dollars. Fleas and lice carried bacteria that caused three major plague pandemics, moved along the Silk Roads from Central Asia. Bacteria carried by insects left their ancient clues as DNA embedded in victims' teeth. Lice caused outbreaks of typhus, especially in crowded conditions such as prisons and concentration camps. Typhus aggravated the effects of the Irish potato famine, and Irish refugees took typhus to North America. Yellow fever was transported to the Americas via the trans-Atlantic slave trade, taking and devaluing the lives of millions of Africans. Slaves were brought to the Americas to reduce labor costs in the cultivation of sugarcane, which was itself transported from south Asia along the Silk Roads. Yellow fever caused panic in the United States in the 1700s and 1800s as the virus and its mosquito vector migrated from the Caribbean. Constructing the Panama Canal required defeating mosquitoes that transmitted yellow fever. The silken thread runs through and ties together these five insects and their impacts on history"--
