Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An in-depth history of the fight for women’s rights over a century in one English city. Struggle and Suffrage in Chelmsford is a comprehensive account of what life was like for women in Chelmsford, England from 1850-1950. It takes the reader on an in-depth and interesting journey, starting from when a woman, as far as both the law of the land and certain elements of society had decided, was worthless with little or no rights. With the birth of women’s suffrage movements gaining recognition on a national level during the latter years of the nineteenth century, the book looks at how this affected the lives of women throughout Chelmsford. The story continues in to the twentieth century and the years of the years of the First World War, which was without question a major turning point in women’s suffrage. The book explores what women achieved throughout the war, in the jobs they undertook and the voluntary work they carried out. It was a time that provided women with freedom and power the likes of which they’d never known before. Attitudes towards divorce and how they changed over time are also discussed—from being a religious stigma around the time of the First World War, to being a life choice in the much more promiscuous times of the Second World War, by which time latex male contraceptives had been available for about twenty years. An informative and fascinating read, Struggle and Suffrage in Chelmsford provides a compelling and moving account of the lives of the town’s women throughout this turbulent era.

Download or read book Chelmsford in the Great War written by Jonathan Swan and published by Pen and Sword. This book was released on 2015-02-28 with total page 249 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Almost 400 men from the Chelmsford were lost in the Great War. This book explores how the experience of war impacted on the Town, from the initial enthusiasm for sorting out the German Kaiser in time for Christmas 1914, to the gradual realization of the enormity of human sacrifice the families of Chelmsford were committed to as the war stretched out over the next four years. A record of the growing disillusion of the people, their tragedies and hardships and a determination to see it through. ??The Great War affected everyone. At home there were wounded soldiers in military hospitals, refugees from Belgium and later on German prisoners of war. There were food and fuel shortages and disruption to schooling. The role of women changed dramatically and they undertook a variety of work undreamed of in peacetime. Meanwhile, men serving in the armed forces were scattered far and wide. Extracts from contemporary letters reveal their heroism and give insights into what it was like under battle conditions.

Download or read book The Girls of Southend High School 1913 2013 written by Pam Mansell and published by Troubador Publishing Ltd. This book was released on 2013-11-01 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book celebrates the lives of the students and former students of Southend High School for Girls during its first one hundred years. Through their words we are able to experience key events of the twentieth century and come to understand how much has been achieved by them. In 1913 women did not even have the vote, including the highly educated and formidable Head Mistress. One year later World War I broke out. Sister Mary Ruth Brewster, on her hundredth birthday in 2005, wrote from South Africa about the air raids, 'we had to get out of our desks, sit cross-legged on the floor on the side away from the window, with our big atlases open and held over our heads.' In World War II the Old Girls faced even more dangers, including imprisonment by the Germans in France and internment by the Japanese in China. Others who went out as teachers and missionaries in the final days of the British Empire also faced dangers from those fighting for their independence. Finally, this would not be a true history of the school without chapters on the uniform, success in sport, and the School Birthday in October with its cards, presents, cakes and celebrations.
