Book The Simple Annals

Book excerpt: History and genealogical data about the Sanders family between about 1628 and about 1945 (with some family notes as late as 1988). "'The simple annals' traces the history of the Sanders family from Stansted in rural Essex in the seventeenth century, via Braintree to the harsh but vital life of Bethnal Green in the East End of London during the early decades of this century. The author places the story of this essentially ordinary family firmly in its social, economic and political context, whilst skilfully dovetailing his analysis of relevant manuscript and printed sources with the oral testimony of his older relatives to produce a rich and vivid story" --Back lining paper.

Book Writing and Rebellion

Download or read book Writing and Rebellion written by Steven Justice and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2023-04-28 with total page 303 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this compelling account of the "peasants' revolt" of 1381, in which rebels burned hundreds of official archives and attacked other symbols of authority, Steven Justice demonstrates that the rebellion was not an uncontrolled, inarticulate explosion of peasant resentment but an informed and tactical claim to literacy and rule. Focusing on six brief, enigmatic texts written by the rebels themselves, Justice places the English peasantry within a public discourse from which historians, both medieval and modern, have thus far excluded them. He recreates the imaginative world of medieval villagers—how they worked and governed themselves, how they used official communications in unofficial ways, and how they produced a disciplined insurgent ideology. This title is part of UC Press's Voices Revived program, which commemorates University of California Press's mission to seek out and cultivate the brightest minds and give them voice, reach, and impact. Drawing on a backlist dating to 1893, Voices Revived makes high-quality, peer-reviewed scholarship accessible once again using print-on-demand technology. This title was originally published in 1996. Book Myth History and the Industrial Revolution

Download or read book Myth History and the Industrial Revolution written by D. C. Coleman and published by A&C Black. This book was released on 1992-07-01 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tourists are today urged to visit the 'birthplace of the Industrial Revolution', packaged as part of 'a glorious heritage'. Half a century and more ago the picture was very different. Then the Industrial Revolution was commonly treated as having been a social catastrophe which had brought 'a new barbarism' to the country. Donald Coleman traces the history of the term 'Industrial Revolution' and the uses to which it has been put. Originating in European radical Romanticism, popularised in English by Arnold Toynbee in the 1 880s, it has achieved, with its meaning transformed, the status of potent myth in the nation's history. The book examines industrial revolutions real and imaginary; illuminates some of the activities of businessmen engaged therein; considers attitudes towards the businessmen who have thus come to occupy the historical stage; and discusses the academic study of business history -- a subject hardly imaginable without the Industrial Revolution. In the course of investigating these inter-related topics, the volume as a whole offers valuable insights into the ways in which economic history has been written and the concepts which have been invented and deployed in an effort to understand a central event in British history. This book provides an excellent introduction to the subject.
