The fullest of these Southampton accounts long precede the foundation of Queen's College, and belong to a time when God's House was an inde pendent corporation. New College has supplied information for the later portion of this inquiry. The archives of this society are in the very best condition, but, with one exception, give no evidence before the reign of Richard the Second. The exception is the manor of Heyford Warren in Oxfordshire. This estate was purchased by Wykeham from the Lisles. The fifth and sixth, volumes were published in 188 7, and during the last three years of his life my father was busily en gaged in collecting material for the concluding part of his book. A large number of figures had been brought together, and even tabulated, when he was seized with the illness that ultimately proved fatal to him. But the series was incomplete, and though prices had been collected for several articles for every year in the period he had set himself to deal with, many subjects were but poorly represented. Among the papers that were left, no clue was found to the existence of any other figures, or to the sources from which he had proposed to draw further information. My father invariably worked alone, with out assistance or delegation, and there was no one therefore who was in a position to offer any valuable opinion on the intended scope of the work. When therefore the Delegates of the University Press kindly agreed to allow me to edit the manuscript my father left behind him, two courses were open to me. They are an attempt to satisfy a total void - the complete absence of all satisfactory information on prices in medieval England. As no treatment of the subject has been in any sense heretofore attempted, it was necessary to publish the great mass of facts which have been gathered, as well as to offer comments on their significance. There is no European country, I believe, except England, the archives of which could supply satisfactory evidence of prices. Up to the time of Henry the Eighth the changes in the English currency, even if they were really operative on prices, were effected at well-known dates. I have attempted in the course of this volume to give reasons for the opinion which I entertain, that up to the reformation of the currency by Elizabeth, payments were made by weight.
