Book A Historical Cruise Through the Ocean State

Download or read book A Historical Cruise Through the Ocean State written by Patrick T. Conley and published by . This book was released on 2020-12 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book, Patrick Conley's thirty-first and his fourth anthology of Rhode Island historical essays, analyzes, like his previous collections, a diversity of Rhode Island topics. Most useful to the student of Rhode Island history are the three introductory essays. The first is a lengthy survey of the state's history written for its 350th anniversary in 1986; the second describes in detail the factors that dramatically transformed Rhode Island from a Republican to a Democratic state (1920-1940); and the third is a local morale booster outlining Rhode Island's eight major contributions to the formation of the United States (1636-1791).The thirty-one remaining essays deal with law (Conley's professional and academic specialty), reviews of Rhode Island books, heritage advocacy, and biographical sketches of select members of the Rhode Island Heritage Hall of Fame, over which Conley has long presided as president. This book concludes with two very personal and introspective biographies - one of Conley's philanthropic wife Gail (his "navigator") and the other of Conley himself, revealing the many facets of his life from childhood to the present.

Book excerpt: In 1905 President Teddy Roosevelt dispatched Secretary of War William Howard Taft on the largest U.S. diplomatic mission in history to Hawaii, Japan, the Philippines, China, and Korea. Roosevelt's glamorous twenty-one year old daughter Alice served as mistress of the cruise, which included senators and congressmen. On this trip, Taft concluded secret agreements in Roosevelt's name. In 2005, a century later, James Bradley traveled in the wake of Roosevelt's mission and discovered what had transpired in Honolulu, Tokyo, Manila, Beijing and Seoul. Book Cruise of the Lanikai

  • Release : 2014-01-15

Download or read book Cruise of the Lanikai written by Kemp Tolley and published by Naval Institute Press. This book was released on 2014-01-15 with total page 343 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In early December 1941 in the Philippines, a young Navy ensign named Kemp Tolley was given his first ship command, an old 76-foot schooner that had once served as a movie prop in John Ford's "The Hurricane." Crewed mostly by Filipinos who did not speak English and armed with a cannon that had last seen service in the Spanish-American War, the Lanikai was under top-secret presidential orders to sail south into waters where the Japanese fleet was thought to be. Ostensibly the crew was to spy on Japanese naval movements, but to Tolley it was clear that their mission was to create an incident that would provoke war. Events overtook the plan, however, when Pearl Harbor was bombed before the Lanikaicould get underway. When Bataan and Corregidor fell, she was ordered to set sail for Australia and became one of the few U.S. naval vessels to escape the Philippines. In this book Tolley tells the saga of her great adventure during these grim, early days of the war and makes history come alive as he regales the reader with details of the operation and an explanation of President Roosevelt's order. Tolley's description of their escape in Japanese warship-infested waters ranks with the best of sea tales, and few will be able to forget the Lanikai's 4,000-mile, three-month odyssey.
