Book Disinfectants and Disinfection Classic Reprint

Download or read book Disinfectants and Disinfection Classic Reprint written by Robert Angus Smith and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-20 with total page 148 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Disinfectants and Disinfection The preservation of meat is not yet brought to perfection, otherwise the cattle of distant parts of the world would be brought into our markets. Flesh becomes infected rapidly, and we require to invent new modes Of disinfection in order to increase the Supply Of meat in this country, and thereby enable us to keep up that physical strength which always was a characteristic of a Briton, and which seems to be the main cause of his energy and success. It is not at all clear that in this department we can have any aid from the ancients. We are able to leave them when we arrive at the preservation of animal food 3 but if it is some pleasure to do so, it is not with perfect satisfaction, because we are aware that we ourselves have not made such progress as to allow us to boast. Indeed, there is a department, namely, that of the preserva tion Of the human body from decay, in Which we find Egypt to have excelled the world, and to an extent which must ever be one of the wonders of history. A dry-climate was a great aid; but even taking that into consideration, the work was well done. They removed the parts of the body which had least tenacity and most moisture, as these are invariably found to decay most rapidly. Book Manual of the Antiseptic Treatment of Wounds

Download or read book Manual of the Antiseptic Treatment of Wounds written by William Watson Cheyne and published by . This book was released on 2015-06-30 with total page 170 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Manual of the Antiseptic Treatment of Wounds: For Students and Practitioners The present manual is written with the view of enabling students to obtain a thorough knowledge of the practical details of the best methods of treating Wounds. It is not, however, intended in any way to be a substitute for the larger works on Antiseptic Surgery; for without a thorough knowledge of the scientific basis of wound treatment, of its development as shown by its history, and of what it can do, the best results are not likely to be obtained, nor can progress be made. In the introductory chapters I have treated of matters which were not ripe for discussion when my work on Antiseptic Surgery was written; and thus I hope that the two volumes will furnish the reader with as complete a view of the subject as is possible at the present time. Book The Evolution of Antiseptic Surgery

Download or read book The Evolution of Antiseptic Surgery written by Henry Solomon Wellcome and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-03-29 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Evolution of Antiseptic Surgery: An Historical Sketch of the Use of Antiseptics From the Earliest Times For many years I have been engaged in researches respecting the early methods employed in the healing arts, amongst both civilised and uncivilised peoples. It has been my object, in particular, to trace the origin of the use of remedial agents. Why were certain sub stances used in the treatment of various diseases? Was their adoption the result of study and practical observa tion, or was it more usually the result of accident? Were the alleged virtues purely imaginary and due to some superstitious suggestion? A consideration of such ques tions is always of interest, and sometimes adds to our knowledge. There is a considerable amount of information scattered throughout the world in folk-lore, early manuscripts and printed books, but the difficulties of tracing out and sifting the evidence are considerable. I anticipate that the Historical Exhibition of medical, chemical and pharmaceutical objects which I am organising, to be held in London (eng), will lead to the revealing of many facts, and the elucidation of many obscure points, in connection with the origins of various medicines.
