Descriptions of apparatus and illustrations have, to a large extent, been omitted, since these are more properly the function of the instructor and of the student himself. For the same reason, results and conclusions of experiments have been left to the student to work out for himself, the descriptions in the text being largely confirmed to methods of procedure involved in obtaining the results. The arrangement of chapters and experiments can be modified to suit the individual instructor. The more difficult experiments may, if desired, be given as demonstrations. It has been the experience of the author that students work best in groups of two for the simpler experiments, and of four for the more complicated experiments. The selection of the experiments presented has been made with a view to the needs of the medical student and to the practical application of the first-hand knowledge, obtained in the laboratory, to medical problems, later. At the same time, it must be borne in mind that one of the main benefits to be obtained from laboratory work is the training in methods of exact observation which the students receive. The present work was commenced with the intention of fulfilling their design; it was announced as a Handbook of Physiology on the Basis of Milller's Elements and many of its chapters, namely, those on motion, voice and speech, r Ssxsss, generation, and development, are chiefly abstracts of corresponding portions of that work, and of the Supplement by Dr. Baly and myself. But, in the rest of the subjects, it was found that the progress of Physiology during seven years had so increased or modified the facts, and some even of the principles of the science, that Miiller's Elements, and the notes added by Dr. Baly, could only be employed as among the best authorities and examples. In pursuance of the latter, he has laid great stress on the numerous physicochemical researches which have done so much for modern Physiology. This has involved a short account of those parts of the physical sciences on which such researches are based. Hence the advanced student of Physiology may use this book as a convenient summary of many experiments hitherto imperfectly known in this country. While the beginner will certainly find that, in addition to a full though condensed treatment of the first principles of this science, it comprehends so much of various kindred subjects as may either obviate, or what is better, fructify, a reference to the ordinary text-books of each. Students are to work in pairs but each 'student is to observe the results of every experiment himself. In some cases it will be necessary for the students to observe experiments performed by the instructor. In this case each: student is to keep notes exactly as when he performs the experiments himself. The notes should include an account of the apparatus, prepara tions made, etc., a statement of what is done in carrying out the experiments or Observations, a statement of the results, and finally of what the experiments Show. While the notes should not be too voluminous, there is much greater likelihood of erring on the side of making them too brief than too long. Complete sentences should always be used and a connected account given, that will be perfectly intelligible to a reader. Sketches, or better, diagrams, of apparatus, figures of structures, etc., should be given wherever possible; they are more important and take the place of long descriptions. Any pertinent matter in the way of explanations, etc., which the student desires to have on record may be written in the book, but should be distinguished from the results of his own observa tions, experiments, and reasoning by being enclosed in parentheses. The instructor will then understand that such matter is not put forward as original results. Enter into each experiment in the spirit of research. Always read the directions carefully and obtain an idea of the general mode of procedure and purpose of the experiment. Do not call upon the instructor at every hitch but endeavor to overcome the difficulty yourself. If you suspect the result of your experiment incorrect consult the instructor before repeating it. Remember that the value obtained from a laboratory course will depend on your own zeal and ingenuity. In Physiology, as in any experimental science, the best results are only obtained if the apparatus is in good working condition and clean. Students should never allow liquids, Spilled on the table, or apparatus to remain there, and before leaving the laboratory, the glassware used must be cleaned and instruments and reagents returned to their proper places.
