Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What makes a romance novel a romance? How do you write a kissing book?Writing a well-structured romance isn't the same as writing any other genre-something the popular novel and screenwriting guides don't address. The romance arc is made up of its own story beats, and the external plot and theme need to be braided to the romance arc-not the other way around.Told in conversational (and often irreverent) prose, Romancing the Beat can be read like you are sitting down to coffee with romance editor and author Gwen Hayes while she explains story structure. The way she does with her clients. Some of whom are regular inhabitants of the New York Times and USA Today bestseller lists.Romancing the Beat is a recipe, not a rigid system. The beats don't care if you plot or outline before you write, or if you pants your way through the drafts and do a "beat check" when you're revising. Pantsers and plotters are both welcome. So sit down, grab a cuppa, and let's talk about kissing books.

  • Author : William M. Reddy
  • Publisher : University of Chicago Press

Download or read book The Making of Romantic Love written by William M. Reddy and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2012-07-09 with total page 450 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the twelfth century, the Catholic Church attempted a thoroughgoing reform of marriage and sexual behavior aimed at eradicating sexual desire from Christian lives. Seeking a refuge from the very serious condemnations of the Church and relying on a courtly culture that was already preoccupied with honor and secrecy, European poets, romance writers, and lovers devised a vision of love as something quite different from desire. Romantic love was thus born as a movement of covert resistance. In The Making of Romantic Love: Longing and Sexuality in Europe, South Asia, and Japan, William M. Reddy illuminates the birth of a cultural movement that managed to regulate selfish desire and render it innocent—or innocent enough. Reddy strikes out from this historical moment on an international exploration of love, contrasting the medieval development of romantic love in Europe with contemporaneous eastern traditions in Bengal and Orissa, and in Heian Japan from 900-1200 CE, where one finds no trace of an opposition between love and desire. In this comparative framework, Reddy tells an appealing tale about the rise and fall of various practices of longing, underscoring the uniqueness of the European concept of sexual desire.

Book Extravagant Expectations

Download or read book Extravagant Expectations written by Paul Hollander and published by Ivan R. Dee. This book was released on 2011-05-16 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The proliferation of dating websites, printed personals and self-help relationship books reflect the new ways Americans seek close, personal relationships. Exposed to changing and often conflicting values, trends, and fashions—disseminated by popular culture, advertising and assorted "experts"—Americans face uncertainties about the best ways to meet important emotional and social needs. How do we establish lasting and intimate personal relationships including marriage? In Extravagant Expectations Paul Hollander investigates how Americans today pursue romantic relationships, with special reference to the advantages and drawbacks of Internet dating compared to connections made in school, college, and the workplace. By analyzing printed personals, dating websites, and advice offered by pop psychology books, he examines the qualities that people seek in a partner and also assesses the influence of the remaining conventional ideas of romantic love. Hollander suggests that notions of romantic love have changed due to conflicting values and expectations and the impact of pragmatic considerations. Individualism, high expectations, social and geographic mobility, changing sex roles, and the American national character all play a part in this fascinating and finally sobering exploration of men and women to find love and meaning in life.

Book Love

  • Author : Niklas Luhmann
  • Publisher : John Wiley & Sons
  • Release : 2014-10-15
  • ISBN : 0745694713
  • Pages : 57 pages

Download or read book Love written by Niklas Luhmann and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2014-10-15 with total page 57 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Love seems like the most personal experience, one that touches each of us in a unique way that is more personal than social, and hence it is not surprising that it has been largely neglected by sociologists and social theorists. While it has long been a central preoccupation of writers and novelists, love has rarely attracted anything more than the most cursory attention of social scientists. This short text, originally written in 1969 by the eminent German social theorist Niklas Luhmann, goes a long way to redressing this neglect. Rather than seeing love as a unique and ineffable personal experience, Luhmann treats love as a solution to a problem that depends on a wider range of social structures and forms. Human beings are faced with a world of enormous complexity and they have to find ways to order and make sense of this world. In other words, they need certain facilities for action Ð what Luhmann calls ‘media of communication’ Ð that enable them to select from a host of alternatives in ways that will be understood as meaningful by others. Love is one of these media; truth, power, money and art are others. With the development of modern societies, greater demands are made on this medium of love, altering the relationship between love and sexuality and giving rise to the distinctive difficulties we associate with love today. This short text by one of the most brilliant social theorists of the 20th century will be of great interest to students and scholars throughout the social sciences and humanities. It is a concise and pithy statement of what is still the only sociological theory of love we have.

(Nature Boy 1947) An indispensable guide and a great learning tool! This book provides complete, simple instructions. The method of loving is easily understood and remembered. It's reduced to a simple acronym you'll find in the book. This mnemonic expands like a blooming spring flower, as the book reveals its inspiring message. The narrative substantiates and reinforces the loving method. Building this web of understanding internalizes love's secrets. We all need this! You need this! Loving is instinctive. Yet we don't understand how to love. When love goes awry, we don't know what we need to know. The stress of dwindling love throws us into a spin. Knowing how love works makes it possible to fix it. Whether it's new love or a staid relationship requiring rebuilding, the method is the same. We just need to understand how it works. Conscious loving eliminates guesswork. Knowing why means knowing how. This book makes it understandable! No more guessing! The logic of loving is described. It's no secret. But amazingly few know it. Often those who do don't really understand it. Helping ordinary people understand how to become lovers is the goal of this book. You can learn to help yourself. The text links romance and love. It's a convincing argument for the endurance of relationships. Love can be everlasting! Romance doesn't have to fade. Anyone following love's progression will find this a priceless road map! Flowing description moves students of loving quickly through the process. Seduction is given its rightful place as the basis of romantic loving. Yet seduction isn't sanctified. Hedonists will find this book a convincing argument for embracing the responsibilities of true love. Women will automatically understand this explanation of loving. They'll know their men need it most. They'll want to read it aloud to them. Men will discover the path to their true masculinity. Both men and women will discover an iron clad way to screen for mates. The method is derived directly from the loving formula. If adhered to, it eliminates finding out that fulfillment isn't possible with your chosen life mate. This should be learned, before couples get together. Unfortunately, it's often only after huge emotional investment that couples realize their relationship love quotient is very low. Communication is the essence of romantic interacting. The topic is expanded, providing guidelines that allow couples to relate, without confronting or becoming antagonistic. Creating neutral interactions helps people work through problems, without the frustration of feeling under constant attack. It's impossible to love when people don't speak politely to each other. There are a few secrets of polite discourse. You'll find them within the pages of "The Love Link." Even though the book is about romantic love, the information provided is useful in all human interactions. The designated roles of the separate genders are described in detail. All human relationships involve power structures. Understanding how to navigate those structures helps us realize our goals in life. Because loving developed from social interactions in our early evolution, the method of loving is universal. It's not confined to romantic loving. It's pervasive throughout our species in all human relationships. This book reveals how to use loving to live successful and fulfilling lives. We're all destined to become lovers, if we simply learn how. It's truly the greatest thing we'll ever learn. That's the purpose of this book. Let us know how we did, by visiting the website, listed in the book. We hope you enjoy reading about human romantic loving as much as we enjoyed researching and writing about it.
