Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the 1930s in the United States, the Works Progress Administration developed the Federal Writers’ Project to support writers and artists while making a national effort to document the country’s shared history and culture. The American Guide series consists of individual guides to each of the states. Little-known authors—many of whom would later become celebrated literary figures—were commissioned to write these important books. John Steinbeck, Saul Bellow, Zora Neale Hurston, and Ralph Ellison are among the more than 6,000 writers, editors, historians, and researchers who documented this celebration of local histories. Photographs, drawings, driving tours, detailed descriptions of towns, and rich cultural details exhibit each state’s unique flavor. The WPA Guide to South Carolina presents a state at the epicenter of Southern culture. The Palmetto State’s guide comes complete with the standard driving tours across the Blue Ridge Mountains and Mid-Atlantic coast as well as recipes for delicacies such has Cracklin’ Bread and Peach Leather.

Download or read book African Americans of Lower Richland County written by Marie Barber Adams and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2010 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lower Richland County encompasses approximately 360 square miles in the heart of South Carolina's geographic center. The Wateree River cradles it to the east, and the Congaree River borders the south and southwest. Virginia settlers discovered this rich land over 250 years ago. They became wealthy planters and accumulated large land tracts, creating plantation systems that sustained the economy. From 1783 until 1820, cotton was the principal cash crop, and the slave population increased tremendously and played a vital role in the development of agriculture and the economy in the area.

Book excerpt: Architecture should be the ideal field of study for applying to service learning since it requires mastery of theoretical concepts for direct application to human situations and needs. Though architecture has long fostered learning by doing, it is only recently that the field’s hands-on aspects have been subjected to more systematic appraisal. This book is the first book to make a formal connection between service learning pedagogy and architectural practice, and to address the related issues, both professional and ethical. This book looks equally at the emergence in the sixties of planning departments out of schools of architecture, and at planning’s shift in orientation away from “master planning,” elite designers, and signature buildings to the mainstream acceptance of neighborhood-based planning and socially engaged practice. This turn has led to far more widespread adoption of service learning in planning programs. The chapters in this book illustrate how service learning can be used to develop a wide range of professional skills in students, including land use and building condition surveys, zoning analysis, demographic analysis, cost estimating, public presentation, site planning, urban design, participatory design processes, public workshops, and design charrettes as well as measured drawings of existing buildings. The author demonstrates how community design programs are more than service activities; and how they can be models of interdisciplinary teamwork, often involving planners, urban designers, and landscape architects as well as scholars and researchers from related fields. The essays in this book offer insights into both successful initiatives and roadblocks along the way and address the practicalities of the use of this powerful pedagogy.

Book excerpt: The Federal Writers Project creates an image of South Carolina of years past All of us, at one time or another, have had a strong desire to be able to get into a time machine and be transported magically to an earlier place and time. Science has not yet produced for us such a time machine, but the Federal Writers Project (FWP), a division of the Works Progress Administration, did produce for prosperity guides to all of the old 48 states. Using talented local researchers and writers the FWP created an image of America fifty plus years ago. A reprint of the original, South Carolina: The WPA Guide to the Palmetto State is divided into three sections: 19 essays on a variety of topics ranging from history to cookery; detailed descriptions of the 11 towns in the state that had populations of more than 10,000; and 21 remarkably detailed guided tours to all sections of the state. In addition to the original chapters, there are two appendices—updated highway numbers for each tour and a guide to getting off the present Interstate Highway System and picking up the guided tours. South Carolina's Guide is very much a product of its times. The essays and tours mince no words in describing the state's poverty or the reality of a world in which class and race played major roles. For those who have studied and taught South Carolina history, the old Guide has been an indispensable reference work. Parts of it may be dated to some jaded modern eyes; some phrases may be jarring to the post-1954 generation. However, the original South Carolina: The WPA Guide to the Palmetto State was what its cover claimed it to be. It accurately described the state as it was—not as romantics wanted it to be.
