Download or read book The Unprofessional Soldier written by David G. Alexander and published by . This book was released on 2016-06-30 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Are lessons ever really learned? Incredibly detailed and highly emotive, "The Unprofessional Soldier" provides a powerful first-person account of the Mesopotamian campaign of the Great War.David Alexander has cleverly interwoven his grandfather's original manuscript and diaries with recollections of conversations together and additional material on the wider context of the campaign. The result is a moving tale of what drives a man to become a soldier and motivates him to fight, to kill and to survive. Insights into military authority, the narrative of wartime decision-making, the ebb and flow of battlefield successes and failures, and the detail of local tactics are balanced by descriptions of day-to-day living and surviving in harsh and dangerous environments where the combination of disease and Arab attacks were as damaging to the British forces as were the Turks themselves. The images of war are evocative: the bloated bodies of comrades in the desert sun, the anger and rage produced by the instant and violent death of a fellow soldier from a gaping head wound, the cold accounts given by the Battalion's hangman and the failed attempt at aerial re-supply of the besieged and starving British army at Kut-al-Amara. Alexander has also included the shades of regret and how a man can justify killing another, expressed in his grandfather's own words. A fascinating, well-researched tale that makes one contemplate the futility of war.

Download or read book Regular Soldiers Irregular War written by Devorah S. Manekin and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2020-08-15 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What explains differences in soldier participation in violence during irregular war? How do ordinary men become professional wielders of force, and when does this transformation falter or fail? Regular Soldiers, Irregular War presents a theoretical framework for understanding the various forms of behavior in which soldiers engage during counterinsurgency campaigns—compliance and shirking, abuse and restraint, as well as the creation of new violent practices. Through an in-depth study of the Israeli Defense Forces' repression of the Second Palestinian Intifada of 2000–2005, including in-depth interviews with and a survey of former combatants, Devorah Manekin examines how soldiers come both to unleash and to curb violence against civilians in a counterinsurgency campaign. Manekin argues that variation in soldiers' behavior is best explained by the effectiveness of the control mechanisms put in place to ensure combatant violence reflects the strategies and preferences of military elites, primarily at the small-unit level. Furthermore, she develops and analyzes soldier participation in three categories of violence: strategic violence authorized by military elites; opportunistic or unauthorized violence; and "entrepreneurial violence"—violence initiated from below to advance organizational aims when leaders are ambiguous about what will best serve those aims. By going inside military field units and exploring their patterns of command and control, Regular Soldiers, Irregular War, sheds new light on the dynamics of violence and restraint in counterinsurgency.
Download or read book Rebellion In Missouri 1861 Nathaniel Lyon And His Army Of The West written by Colonel Hans Christian Adamson and published by Pickle Partners Publishing. This book was released on 2016-01-18 with total page 467 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The story of General Nathaniel Lyon, whom the author aptly calls a “Missouri Yankee,” is a drama of stirring political-military events breaking on the Western Border in the spring of 1861. In exactly 90 days, Missouri was forever lost to the Confederacy. The Lyon story is high tragedy staged at the sanguine second battle of the American Civil War—Wilson’s Creek. Colonel Hans Christian Adamson in Rebellion in Missouri combines all the necessary elements in the dramatic story. He expertly re-examines Lyon’s generalship of the Union Army of the West. He ably reflects upon the significance of the Battle of Wilson’s Creek now, a century later, in the light of all the evidence. Moreover, he brings to us, during the centennial year of Lyon’s death, a monumental biography of Lyon. The others are eulogistic and written in the stilted and artificial speech of the eighteen sixties.

Book excerpt: Montauban was the southernmost of the Somme villages attacked by the British Army on 1 July, 1916, and it was where there was the greatest success. This new book in the series takes the reader over ground where Captain Nevill kicked a football on going over the top, where the Somme cameramen took some of their most evocative footage and where Pals battalions engaged in a triumphant first major engagement.
