When an older boy pushes him on the soccer field, his anger fills him in a way that surely a true Gandhi could never imagine. Can Arun ever live up to the Mahatma? Book A Grandfather S Gift

Download or read book A Grandfather S Gift written by James E. Smith Sr. and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2014-02-11 with total page 313 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is about my life experiences and also contains the stories I have heard my folks tell while sitting on the front porch after supper. For many years, my maternal grandfather lived with us. He and my dad would swap interesting stories about times when they were growing up and farming with oxen and mules. They talked about the dummy line railroads that ran through the forest near our home and told their childhood tales and many other stories I would long for later in life. I wanted to pass this and my life stories down to my descendants. Many interesting stories were told in the serene setting of the front porch deep in the country, with only the interruptions of whippoorwills, hoot owls, screech owls, and such making pleasant noises in the distant woods. I hope that this book will inspire future generations in some way to understand the important things in life. Its been said that the best things are free, and I learned that one only has to make necessary efforts to obtain a peaceful, happy, and fulfilling life.

Book The Lawyer s Relic and a Grandfather s Dilemma

Download or read book The Lawyer s Relic and a Grandfather s Dilemma written by Julian Bauer and published by WestBowPress. This book was released on 2013-08-02 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Author of the acclaimed historical novel, The Scholars Challenge, Julian Bauer now turns his unique writing abilities to two contemporary novellas, The Lawyers Relic and A Grandfathers Dilemma. The first novella asks how an agnostic lawyer would react if he found a bloody napkin wrapped as a Christmas gift. Would he throw it away even if he found a card attached describing it as the burial face cloth of Jesus Christ? How would he react if supposedly miraculous events occurred? Would his legal skills play a factor in his search for an answer to what it all means? The second novella puts a elderly man in a predicament. He faces death from old age and has settled all his worldly affairs when a middle-aged woman and her adult son show up on his doorstep. She claims the young man is his grandson. Is he? Moreover, she tells the old man that her son has major character flaws needing someone of his ability to redeem him. He refuses to take on the responsibility. She insists. In any case, how could an unwilling young man be changed? Is it possible that age can bring with it weapons of unusual teaching abilities? Heartbreaking and enlightening, these powerful stories engage the reader in questions of faith and integrity. In writing these novellas, Julian utilizes all the investigative and managerial tools he gained in his career as CEO of his own company, executive in the Federal government, and national president of a nonprofit organization. He skillfully weaves two riveting tales around the benefits of trust and virtue.

Book Tales from a Grandfather

Download or read book Tales from a Grandfather written by William B. Ball and published by Dog Ear Publishing. This book was released on 2008 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bill Ball was born in Oakland, California on June 21st, 1915, but since his parents moved to Wheatland before he was a year old, he always considered that small farming community his hometown. Wheatland, population 500, forty miles north of Sacramento, was an ideal place to grow up. With fields, pastures, woods, and the Bear River close by, plenty of adventures could feed the imagination of a young boy. A deserted cabin discovered in the woods became a castle for Bill and his 11-year-old pals. They learned to swim in the river, drying off on the warm sand bar, then seeking shade under the willows. Chores included lawn mowing, hedge trimming, wood gathering, or helping in the machine shop and gas station. Attending high school during the Great Depression, Bill saw first hand how Wheatland residents struggled to maintain a decent living. Graduating in 1933 with a class of fourteen ended what had been an idyllic adventure and it was off to the big city, Sacramento, to study engineering. College opened up a brand new world as he studied descriptive geometry, calculus, land surveying, and mechanical design. Bill's talent for music found expression in a dance band, where he played saxophone and clarinet. After completing the program in Sacramento, Bill moved on to Berkeley to attend the University of California, furthering his engineering studies and still playing the sax. Spending summers working survey parties and having part-time design jobs prepared Bill for his first post-college career assignment. Going to work for the Henry J. Kaiser company in 1938, he took a giant step, relocating to Mason City, Washington where Grand Coulee Dam was being constructed. Leaving a fiance behind in Oakland was tough, but the starting salary was persuasive and the opportunity priceless. Thus began a forty-year engineering career that took him all across the United States and around the world. The war years found Bill back in California working for Kaiser in the Richmond shipyards where more than 400 ships were built in 4 years. He married Helen Hederman in 1940, and their two daughters were born in those lean but exciting years. With civil and mechanical professional engineering licenses in hand, Bill embraced every new challenging assignment from dams to dredging, from automobile plants to aluminum smelters, from water reservoirs to rapid transit systems. He started as a junior engineer and was Vice President and Chief Engineer with Kaiser Engineers and Constructors when he retired in 1979. In Tales from a Grandfather, dedicated to his two granddaughters and their grandmother, Bill relates stories of his boyhood, college years that were filled with learning about engineering, a joyous career that took him around the world, and the love he and his wife shared during 64 years of marriage. Bill still lives in Oakland near one daughter and granddaughter, meets regularly with colleagues from Kaiser, and is currently working on developing several short stories and a novel."

Book The Birth of a Grandfather

Download or read book The Birth of a Grandfather written by May Sarton and published by Open Road Media. This book was released on 2015-08-18 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: May Sarton’s 7th novel is about marriage, family, life’s cycles, and the regeneration of love Frances and Sprig Wyeth have come to the old Wyeth house in Maine for the summer. In a house filled with lively members of her husband’s extended family, Frances feels alienated from everyone, including Sprig. A night of passion breaks down the growing barriers between them, yet Frances feels it is more a “desperate moment of possession” than the true “flowing together of two deeply joined selves.” And although she’s the mother of two grown children, in many ways she still feels like a child, waiting to mature into adulthood. Sprig adores his wife. But now, at 50, he both wants her and wants her to leave. He longs for freedom and is haunted by memories of his youth. His son, Caleb, is hostile; his unmarried daughter, Betsy, is pregnant. Sprig feels as if he is “walking in the dark,” and has begun to doubt himself as a husband, father, and friend. The Birth of a Grandfather is the story of a marriage and a family, of friendship and the love that reminds us that we are alive and that we matter. It’s about the small domestic moments and the defining events that make up a life.
