This book was released on 2017-10-12 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Improved Grammar of the English Language If is called also a conjunction. His is not true it is always a verb, being only a contracted form of give. The fact is the same with though; it is a verb, but defective. To the syntax, I have added several new rules and illustrations; the British Grammars, in this particular, being very defective. In deed, so defective and erroneous are the British Grammars, and the compilations in the United States, formed on their principles, that without some further helps, the construction of many established and legitimate phrases and sentences in our language, cannot be explained. Book The Grammar of English Grammars Illustrated

Download or read book The Grammar of English Grammars Illustrated written by Goold Brown and published by Full Moon Publications. This book was released on 2004 with total page 3570 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Goold Brown (7 March 1791 – 31 March 1857) was an American grammarian. Born in Providence, Rhode Island, the third child of Smith Brown and Lydia Gould. His family could be traced to some of the earliest Quakers in New England. Author Preface : After about fifteen years devoted chiefly to grammatical studies and exercises, during most of which time I had been alternately instructing youth in four different languages, thinking it practicable to effect some improvement upon the manuals which explain our own, I prepared and published, for the use of schools, a duodecimo volume of about three hundred pages; which, upon the presumption that its principles were conformable to the best usage, and well established thereby, I entitled, "The Institutes of English Grammar." Of this work, which, it is believed, has been gradually gaining in reputation and demand ever since its first publication, there is no occasion to say more here, than that it was the result of diligent study, and that it is, essentially, the nucleus, or the groundwork, of the present volume.

Book Principles of English Grammar

Download or read book Principles of English Grammar written by Elijah A. Burns and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-24 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Principles of English Grammar After long experience in teaching the most approved systems of English Grammar, the author ventures to offer to the Public a work of his own, which he believes will greatly abridge the labor of students, in acquiring a correct and practical knowledge of the principles of the English Language. A thorough acquaintance with our own language, is an acquisition which transcends every other literary accomplishment. No person will be likely to deny this, when he remembers that the greater part of whatever knowledge he possesses, be it much or little, has been derived through the medium of his vernacular tongue. The English Language is preeminently the Language of Liberty, Progress and Civilization. Many of the ancient and modern languages have contributed their richest gems to improve and embellish it; and it is admitted by the most erudite critics, that it affords a greater variety of appropriate words for expressing lofty and sublime thought, than any other language spoken by man. At present, those who use the English Language, surpass all the rest of mankind in morality, refinement, and useful invention; and perhaps, the time is not very far distant, when they will control the Literature and Politics of the World. Book Linguistic Perspectives on English Grammar

Download or read book Linguistic Perspectives on English Grammar written by Martin J. Endley and published by IAP. This book was released on 2010-12-01 with total page 529 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The proposed book is best described as a linguistically oriented textbook taking the grammar of English as its subject matter. It is directed to professional teachers of English (ESL and EFL) and their students, as well as those currently training to become teachers of English. The book is also likely to be of interest to interpreters, translators and other English language professionals. It will explore selected aspects and problem areas of English from a broadly “functional” linguistic perspective. My experience as a teacher and teacher trainer has shown me that this perspective has the potential to inspire teachers and students with a genuine enthusiasm for the grammatical features of English and that it often enables them to “make sense” of the grammar in a way that all too often other approaches signally fail to do. An important focus of the book is on understanding grammar as a series of conventionalized patterns rather than a set of rules (which is how grammar has traditionally been presented). Moreover, unlike many other grammar books, this book emphasizes how the grammatical constructions under consideration are employed in various types of communicative situation, attention being given to the importance of discourse context in interpreting the target forms. In line with contemporary linguists generally, the approach adopted is descriptive rather than prescriptive. While the main focus is on English, I offer occasional comments on how the issue under discussion is expressed in languages other than English. Apart from the inherent interest which I hope such comparisons may have for the reader, I take the view that these can be helpful in casting further light on the grammar of English.
