Book Toward a Typological Grammar of the Yi Group

Download or read book Toward a Typological Grammar of the Yi Group written by Matthias Gerner and published by . This book was released on 2002 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis presents the most intriguing linguistic peculiarities of eleven Yi languages which were studied over several years of field research by the author. The data cover an array of topics and are presented with the purpose of giving an impetus to the theories of general linguistics. Most chapters contain typologies where the eleven Yi languages are classified with regard to the features developed in that chapter. Seven chapters make up the body of this dissertation. Chapter 1 covers the introduction, background, and methodologies used. In chapter 2, the author develops an integrated model of the noun phrase as a multi-parametric configuration and provides an explanation for the life cycle of definite articles in Weining Neasu. In Neasu there is the following cline: demonstratives > definite articles > topic marker. Chapter 3 and 4 present studies of the syntactical type of two Yi languages. Liangshan Nuosu (chapter 3) constitutes a unique case in syntactic typology with regard to the treatment of coreferential NPs at the level of clause combining. Nuosu is a language where the coreferential NPs must be in the initial position of their respective VP for the second NP to allow deletion. This strictly syntax-based system allows the definition of partial grammatical relations. In chapter 4, it is demonstrated within the framework of Optimality Theory that Yongren Lolo is a language that balances the three conflicting syntax constraints CLARITY, ECONOMY and FLEXIBILITY better than other languages. Exhaustion particles (chapter 5) are A-quantifiers with a puzzling wealth of scope possibilities. With gradable states they convey the meaning of superlative ('extremely'), in non-punctual events they mean 'completely', and in non-gradable states or punctual events they function as a universal argument quantifier ('all'). The author works out an object-state-event structure (based on Krifka's event semantics) and provides a logical characterization of the aspectual classes generated by the exhaustion particles. Chapter 6 presents a study of the EXPERIENTIAL, PERIODICAL and HABITUAL aspects in the Yi group. The main point here is the development of an occurrence typology of situations which accounts for the three aspects. In chapter 7 the author presents a study of perfect particles. Several Yi languages display two types of perfect: the English type and the Mandarin type. It appears that both perfects have in common their relating the utterance situation to the discourse topic (in Klein's terminology: TU !"" TT).
