Book An Introduction to Breton Grammar Classic Reprint

Download or read book An Introduction to Breton Grammar Classic Reprint written by Percy Treasure and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-09-17 with total page 96 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Introduction to Breton Grammar The principal object which influenced the writer in bringing out this small volume was a need - admitted to exist by not a few competent to form an Opinion for some simple exposition in English of the Grammar of the Breton Language, which would be of service to that large and rapidly growing section of the British race which desires an acquaintance with the literature and language of their Armorican relatives in Little Britain. Of this section a considerable proportion have been deterred by their imperfect knowledge of the third language hitherto essential to such acquaintance. And this definition of its scope may be said to determine the limits of its 'sphere of influence, ' for the writer makes no pretence to have compiled a treatise by the mastery of which, the tyro could be justified in supposing him self fully equipped for the purpose of sustaining a con versation in the Breton language. It will rather seek to demonstrate by rule and paradigm - many of the former strangely familiar on t/zz's side of the Channel - the high degree of excellence attained by this ancient tongue, and its faithfulness to its Celtic origin; and that too, despite both its complete isolation from its con geners in Great Britain, as well as the repressive efforts put forth from time to time, directly and indirectly, to deprive this language of its very existence. Book An Introduction to Breton Grammar

Download or read book An Introduction to Breton Grammar written by Percy Treasure and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-16 with total page 96 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Introduction to Breton Grammar To find a parallel to such an arbitrary and autocratic measure as that issued by the French Minister of Spiritual Affairs, and dated September 29th, 1902 (whereby over one million Breton people are deprived of all effective religious instruction by the insistence that such instruction be given in French only), it is happily necessary for us in Great Britain to go as far back as the time of the Reformation; when the partially - understood Latin service book was withdrawn from the Cornish Church, on the excellent plea that all public worship should be offered in accordance with Apostolic precept - 'in a known tongue' - at the same time with the utmost inconsequence the authorities imposed an English service book, hardly one word of which was intelligible to the Cornish people! That privilege which the Welsh were powerful enough to secure to themselves by statute law (v. Elizabeth; xiii. xiv. Charles II.), the Cornish, on the petition of their Anglophile gentry (on commercial grounds proh pudor!), as well as on account of their relatively small numbers, lost. May the Breton people escape the fate of their Cornish cousins, for jam proximus ardet Ucalegon! About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book The Sound Structure of Modern Irish

Download or read book The Sound Structure of Modern Irish written by Raymond Hickey and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2015-02-17 with total page 417 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Sound Structure of Modern Irish contains a comprehensive description of the phonology of Irish. Based on the main forms of the language, it offers an analysis of the segments and the processes in its sound system. Each section begins with a description of the area of phonology which is the subject - such as stress patterns, phonotactics, epenthesis or metathesis - and then proceeds to consider the special aspects of this subject from a theoretical and typological perspective. The book pays particular attention to key processes in the sound system of modern Irish. The two most important of these are palatalisation and initial mutation, phenomena which are central to Irish and the analysis of which has consequences for general phonological theory. The other main emphasis in the book is on a typological comparison of several different languages, all of which show palatalisation and/or initial mutation as part of their systems. The different forms of Celtic, Slavic languages, Romance dialects and languages along with languages such as Finnish, Fula, Nivkh and Southern Paiute are considered to find out how processes which are phonetic in origin (external sandhi) can become functionalised and integrated into the morphosyntactic system of a language.

Book Eastern European Perspectives on Celtic Studies

Download or read book Eastern European Perspectives on Celtic Studies written by Michael Hornsby and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2019-01-08 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume brings together contributions from a range of scholars, not only from the Celtic heartlands, but further afield such as Austria, Canada and Poland. The chapters are based upon a number of presentations on a wide range of Celtic Studies given at a conference in Poznań, Poland, in October 2014. The book, as such, emphasizes the international aspect of the field, and highlights the relatively strong position of Celtic Studies in Poland, through the inclusion of Polish scholars working on Irish and Breton, and by introducing an academic audience to the ‘conversation’ on Celtic matters which was held recently on Polish soil. Celtic Studies are currently undergoing a series of changes with respect to the approaches adopted, and the field is brought into question in this volume with an examination of the notion of Celtoscepticism, which, as pointed out, when tackled in the right way, can breathe new life into the subject and can be viewed as a positive movement. As such, a number of contributions here problematize the changes in thinking of many linguists over the concept of who is a speaker of a Celtic language and how well they speak it, as well as the connection between traditional Celtic cultural practices and the concept of well-being. The volume also provides chapters on Mediaeval Celtic Studies which showcase the work of a number of emerging scholars in the field, who examine various aspects of Celtic textuality in Mediaeval Scotland, Brittany and Wales. Indeed, this book gives voice to a number of early career scholars, placing them carefully alongside more established scholars in the field, in order to show the continuation of established methods of investigation.
