Book A Glimpse of the Kingdom in Academia

Download or read book A Glimpse of the Kingdom in Academia written by Irene Alexander and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2013-02-11 with total page 203 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: University is a major way that our society prepares professionals and leaders in education, health, government, business, arts, church--all components of our communal lives. Although the beginnings of the first universities were Christian, academia has become more and more adrift from these foundations. We have lost not only the union, the interwovenness of theological and academic understandings, but also the relational and communal process of learning which teaches students to be other-centered in their practice. A Glimpse of the Kingdom in Academia tells the story of the social sciences department of a small Christian university that took seriously the mandate to prepare their students to be salt and light in a secular society. Here are stories of the transformation in students' lives, as well as description of classroom practices, and the epistemological theory behind those practices. The book explores academic knowing, Christian worldview, relational epistemology, inner knowing, and wisdom--all ways of knowing that a Christian university should teach. The process of transformation, the context of community, and the bigger picture of life's journey and changing images of God are identified as important aspects of kingdom life in academia. The institutional setting is also critiqued with the recognition that power practices need to align with the kingdom of the Christ who emptied himself.

Book Desiring the Kingdom Cultural Liturgies

Download or read book Desiring the Kingdom Cultural Liturgies written by James K. A. Smith and published by Baker Academic. This book was released on 2009-08-01 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Malls, stadiums, and universities are actually liturgical structures that influence and shape our thoughts and affections. Humans--as Augustine noted--are "desiring agents," full of longings and passions; in brief, we are what we love. James K. A. Smith focuses on the themes of liturgy and desire in Desiring the Kingdom, the first book in what will be a three-volume set on the theology of culture. He redirects our yearnings to focus on the greatest good: God. Ultimately, Smith seeks to re-vision education through the process and practice of worship. Students of philosophy, theology, worldview, and culture will welcome Desiring the Kingdom, as will those involved in ministry and other interested readers.

Book excerpt: The kingdom of God and the atonement are two of the most important themes in all of Scripture. Tragically, theologians have often either set the two at odds or focused on one to the complete neglect of the other. In The Crucified King, Jeremy Treat demonstrates that Scripture presents a mutually enriching relationship between the kingdom and atonement that draws significantly from the story of Israel and culminates in the crucifixion of Christ the king. As Israel’s messiah, he holds together the kingdom and the cross by bringing God’s reign on earth through his atoning death. The kingdom is the ultimate goal of the cross, and the cross is the means by which the kingdom comes. Jesus’ death is not the failure of his messianic ministry, nor simply the prelude to his royal glory, but is the apex of his kingdom mission. The cross is the throne from which he rules and establishes his kingdom. Using a holistic approach that brings together the insights of biblical and systematic theology, this book demonstrates not only that the kingdom and the cross are inseparable, but how they are integrated in Scripture and theology.

Book excerpt: "A Glimpse of Glory is a wonderful testament to God's love and promises from one who experienced death only reluctantly returning to life as we know it from the hereafter. The author wipes away the trepidation even Christians feel toward death and an inkling of what comes next while sharing his own humble beginnings, rugged upbringing and experiences. Rick East is the real deal and has a great message in his acceptance of Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior and what he believes God wants him to share with as many as possible. This story is first rate with a vivid emotional impact and obviously has God's blessing." Nick Weyland, fellow author and Christian brother A Glimpse of Glory A mysterious illness caused Rick East to lapse into respiratory failure the afternoon of December 25, 2012. Rick discovered his spirit was in heaven and was being coached by the Holy Spirit. Rick saw the city of heaven and had many conversations with the Holy Spirit. Book Golf in the Kingdom

Download or read book Golf in the Kingdom written by Michael Murphy and published by Open Road Media. This book was released on 2011-06-07 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A spiritual journey, a lush travelogue, a parable of sports and philosophy—John Updike called this unique novel “a golf classic if any exists in our day.” When an American traveler on his way to India stops to play a round on one of the most beautiful and legendary golf courses in Scotland, he doesn’t know that his game—and his life—are about to change forever. He is introduced to Shivas Irons, a mysterious golf pro whose sublime insights stick with him long after the eighteenth hole. From the first swing of the Scotsman’s club, he realizes he is in for a most extraordinary day. By turns comic, existential, and semiautobiographical, Michael Murphy’s tale traces the arc of twenty-four hours, from a round of golf on the Links of Burningbush to a night fueled by whiskey, wisdom, and wandering—even a sighting of Seamus MacDuff, the holy man who haunts the hole they call Lucifer’s Rug. “Murphy’s book is going to alter many visions,” The New York Times Book Review declared. More than an unforgettable approach to one of the world’s most popular sports, Golf in the Kingdom is a meditation on the power of a game to transform the self.

This book was released on 2012-08-01 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The spiritual subject of past lives and reincarnation is highly controversial. Most religions don't believe it, and science cannot prove it yet. This book is an energy healing communication with a DNA surprise, assisting you to integrate and understand the deep-seated truths about who you are and where you came from. The information explains what is happening to us, the earth, and the universe, and what one needs to do to adapt to the new energies on the planet at this time and for the years to come. These pages contain a profound message with the new energya message that I have delivered many times over my many lifetimes. Who am I? and Where do I come from? are questions that have been on the minds of everyone since the beginning. These thoughts are imprinted in our basic DNA. When I became aware of who I was in the previous lifetime just before this one (less than five months between lives)my newfound identity propelled me into the search for the answers to the questions gnawing at my soul. Each answer provided new questions, leading me down the enlightened path to an encounter with the Grand Divine Plan, delivering a message of peace and preparation. We all have gifts and abilities unimaginable, ready for anyone who walks through the door. My search brought me into an awareness of knowing many of my past lives. It also revealed that my purpose of discovering was not about who I was, but that I would write about past lives and reincarnation at a time on the planet when this information would be so needed.
