Book A Glance Toward Shakespeare Classic Reprint

Download or read book A Glance Toward Shakespeare Classic Reprint written by John Jay Chapman and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-03 with total page 130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Glance Toward Shakespeare The use of great men is to bind the world together. Everybody knows of them, thinks and writes about them, till they become portions of the common mind. An aftercomer cannot tell his own story, or even see life clearly, without reference to those who have controlled the world's thought in the past. And thus the names of great men become a part of the elemental power of language itself, Shakespeare's works touch our life and mind at all points, and he is himself behind most of our critical perceptions. He illumines our atmosphere, and the prismatic lights and shadows that he casts through each generation are moving and transitory things. I have, therefore, not ventured to call the papers by a title more ambitious than a glance toward the light. It was near the end of the eighteenth century that men began to realize the greatness of Shakespeare, and literary persons were then visited with a new, vague, and strange experience - the discovery that the power of Shakespeare was beyond the reach of criticism. The labors of scholarship over the poet have spread the news, till it has become a commonplace. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Historical Tales from Shakespeare Classic Reprint

Download or read book Historical Tales from Shakespeare Classic Reprint written by Arthur Thomas Quiller-Couch and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-25 with total page 460 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Historical Tales From Shakespeare Although in the following pages I have chosen those plays, or most of them, which Charles and Mary Lamb omitted from their Tales from Shake speare, and although I have. Taken a title very like theirs, my attempt has not been to round off or tag a conclusion to their inimitable work. They, as wise judges of what their book should be, found that a certain class of play lay outside their purpose. It is just these plays - the historical ones - which, with a different purpose, are here cast into narrative form. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Three Plays of Shakespeare Thought is intended as a re sponse to what appears to be the special demand of the century now opening. Just as in the organic world every organism is, we are told, a growth of cells springing from the parent cell, so every good book is nothing more than a synthetic ex pansion of a single, central, living thought. Bacon's entire system of philosophy is nothing more than a development of one great thought: We conquer nature by obeying her. Again, before Darwin and Wal. Book Twelfth Night Or What You Will Classic Reprint

Download or read book Twelfth Night Or What You Will Classic Reprint written by William Shakespeare and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-11 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Twelfth Night, or What You Will I venture to believe that we are too much accustomed to regard Shakespeare as a writer of impulse rather than premeditation;1 the fact is that almost throughout the whole period of his authorship he combined a marvellous spontaneity with an equally marvellous discipline of thought and command of material. And this fact is not less true of the sources of his dramas; he spares no pains in his research; he disdains no authority, and no hint in any authority. To these preliminary considerations two other facts may be added. Shakespeare usually avoided the trouble not, of course, of elaborating - but of inventing a story; he preferred to adapt the plot of some existing novel or drama; and rightly, as I think; for a glance at almost any one of the great literatures of the world will convince us that to originate in the matter of myth or episode or narrative has been more often the frolic of a nation in its youth, or the task of mere ingenuity, and that the higher creative genius has displayed itself by its power of trans muting the crude metal of popular fable or story into the fine gold of drama and epic. But the remaining fact has yet to be stated; for this power of transmuting was possessed by Shakespeare in a far greater degree than by any other literary alchemist. Book Shakespeare and Other Lectures Classic Reprint

Download or read book Shakespeare and Other Lectures Classic Reprint written by George Dawson and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-12 with total page 588 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Shakespeare and Other Lectures Ever since the publication of Mr Dawson's "Biographical Lectures," friends have been asking for others, which they remembered hearing in their delivery; and thus has been prompted the preparation of the present volume. The volume contains lectures and speeches - some delivered in earlier years, some in later, and differing considerably in style and merit; but the greater disparities are more owing to the reporter than the speaker. When a lecture is reported by Miss Beauclerc - as is the case with the one on the Shadow of Death we have a near approach to fulness and accuracy; but some of the newspaper reports are mere fragments which have missed what was most characteristic, and are only included because they serve as connecting links. In the preparation of the book I have had, as before, the invaluable help of Miss Beauclerc in collating and transcribing. The volume, we know, will be acceptable to Mr Dawson's old friends; and we trust it will be found bracing and helpful to young people. The Editor has supplied the foot-notes.
