Download or read book The Future of Another Timeline written by Annalee Newitz and published by Tor Books. This book was released on 2019-09-24 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “A revolution is happening in speculative fiction, and Annalee Newitz is leading the vanguard."--Wil Wheaton From Annalee Newitz, founding editor of io9, comes a story of time travel, murder, and the lengths we'll go to protect the ones we love. 1992: After a confrontation at a riot grrl concert, seventeen-year-old Beth finds herself in a car with her friend's abusive boyfriend dead in the backseat, agreeing to help her friends hide the body. This murder sets Beth and her friends on a path of escalating violence and vengeance as they realize many other young women in the world need protecting too. 2022: Determined to use time travel to create a safer future, Tess has dedicated her life to visiting key moments in history and fighting for change. But rewriting the timeline isn’t as simple as editing one person or event. And just when Tess believes she's found a way to make an edit that actually sticks, she encounters a group of dangerous travelers bent on stopping her at any cost. Tess and Beth’s lives intertwine as war breaks out across the timeline--a war that threatens to destroy time travel and leave only a small group of elites with the power to shape the past, present, and future. Against the vast and intricate forces of history and humanity, is it possible for a single person’s actions to echo throughout the timeline? Praise for The Future of Another Timeline: "An intelligent, gut-wrenching glimpse of how tiny actions, both courageous and venal, can have large consequences. Smart and profound on every level.”—Publishers Weekly (starred review) "You close the book reeling with questions about your own life and your part in changing the future."—Amy Acker, actress (Angel and Person of Interest) At the Publisher's request, this title is being sold without Digital Rights Management Software (DRM) applied.
Download or read book Between Past and Future written by Hannah Arendt and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2006-09-26 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the author of Eichmann in Jerusalem and The Origins of Totalitarianism, “a book to think with through the political impasses and cultural confusions of our day” (Harper’s Magazine) Hannah Arendt’s insightful observations of the modern world, based on a profound knowledge of the past, constitute an impassioned contribution to political philosophy. In Between Past and Future Arendt describes the perplexing crises modern society faces as a result of the loss of meaning of the traditional key words of politics: justice, reason, responsibility, virtue, and glory. Through a series of eight exercises, she shows how we can redistill the vital essence of these concepts and use them to regain a frame of reference for the future. To participate in these exercises is to associate, in action, with one of the most original and fruitful minds of the twentieth century.
Download or read book Past and future are here and now written by Helena Petrovna Blavatsky and published by Philaletheians UK. This book was released on 2020-10-01 with total page 21 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Our century is a boastful age, as proud as it is hypocritical; as cruel as it is dissembling. Happy the optimist in whose heart the nightingale of hope can still sing, with all the iniquity and cold selfishness of the present age before his eyes! There are more hypocrites in a square yard of our “civilized soil” than antiquity has bred of them on all its idolatrous lands. It takes a brave man to speak the truth fearlessly, and even that at personal risk and cost. For the law forbids one speaking the truth, except under compulsion, in its courts and under threat of perjury. Instead of truth and sincerity, we have cold politeness and falsification on every plane; falsification of moral food, and the same falsification of eatable food. Be religious or irreligious as much as you like but do not be offensive, and dare not outrage and pain other people. In law, that which is sauce for the goose must be sauce for the gander. Thou shalt not revile the gods. Blasphemy with the modern criminal sense attached to it, existed with the Greeks, the Romans, and with the older Egyptians, ages before our era. Reverence is now replaced by emotionalism and holy mediocrities. The emanations of modern civilization kill all goodness and truth. When the “inferior races” have all been wiped out by the “civilized man,” what shall replace them in the cycle that is to mirror our own? True charity opens her purse strings with an invisible hand and, finishing its act, exists no more; it shuns fame and is never ostentatious. Pride is the first enemy to itself: unwilling to hear anyone praised in its presence, it falls foul of every rival and does not always come out victorious. The most beautiful serpents are the most venomous. As the external excellence of a thing does not reflect the moral beauty of its workman, so some of the most eminent poets and philosophers were historically immoral. We will not be moved by either hysterical emotion or a holy fear of the masses and propriety. Whether the new cycle will bring new horrors or herald days of pure sunlight and happiness for all, will depend on those who fight the battle of Truth against the powers of Darkness. Theosophy is brotherly love, mutual help, altruism in action, and unswerving devotion to Truth. Once men realize that in these alone can true happiness be found, and never in wealth, possessions, or any selfish gratification, then the dark clouds will roll away, and a new humanity will be born upon earth. Then, the Golden Age will be there.

Book excerpt: Integrated History and Philosophy of Science (iHPS) is commonly understood as the study of science from a combined historical and philosophical perspective. Yet, since its gradual formation as a research field, the question of how to suitably integrate both perspectives remains open. This volume presents cutting edge research from junior iHPS scholars, and in doing so provides a snapshot of current developments within the field, explores the connection between iHPS and other academic disciplines, and demonstrates some of the topics that are attracting the attention of scholars who will help define the future of iHPS.
Download or read book Has Asia Lost It Dynamic Past Turbulent Future written by Vasuki Shastry and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2021-02-25 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ''Shastry's polemic cites extensive research from experts and exploits the author's knowledge of Asia and his connections to the region's elite, with whom he rubs shoulders at Davos and other summits. What shows through in the book though is Shastry's compassion for the continent's ordinary people.'IMF F&D MagazineAsia has been the greatest show on earth since Japan's rise from the ashes of World War II, accompanied in successive decades with the emergence of the Asian tigers, and eventually the two giants China and India. The Asian miracle has few precedents in the modern era, with billions lifted from poverty in a generation. The region's openness to trade and investment aligned perfectly with the tailwinds of globalisation. However, in recent years Asia has become a victim of its own success with commentators not differentiating between a utopian high-income Asia and a dystopian middle- and low-income Asia, where a significant majority of the region's population live. Asia today can be divided into countries which have a lot, have a little, and have none. The continent's dream run is also coming to an end as Covid-19 exposes sharp weaknesses in state capacity and structural challenges like the U.S.-China trade war is putting globalisation into reverse gear, jeopardising the region's hard-earned economic success. Asia's growth-obsessed policymakers have also ignored social pressures from the impact of technology on jobs, rising inequality, fabulous wealth accumulation by a favoured billionaire class, a deepening demographic divide, climate distress, and gender disparity, which threaten to destabilise the region's famed cohesiveness. In his penetrating new book, well-known Asia expert Vasuki Shastry argues that while Asia's reckoning may have been the subject of speculation before the pandemic, Covid-19 has made that inevitable. Inspired by Dante's Inferno, Shastry takes readers on a journey through modern Asia's eight circles of hell where we encounter urban cowboys and cowgirls fleeing rural areas to live in increasingly uninhabitable cities, disadvantaged teenage girls unable to meet their aspirations due to social strictures, internal mutiny, messy geopolitics from the rise of China, and a political and business class whose interests are in conflict with a majority of the population. Shastry challenges conventional thinking about Asia's place in the world and the book is essential reading for those with an interest in the continent's future.Related Link(s)

This book is entirely designed to satisfy especially the multi-faceted needs of all India and overseas CBSE students reading in class VIII to X. This book can obviously be used as both, a conceptual textbook and an ideal and innovative practice book. Among ambitious students and learned teachers, the usefulness of this book should, moreover, effectively work at both levels i.e. (a) concept-building level or subject-enrichment and (b) score-grabing level or performance assessment. To augment its usefulness further, ample example sentences, structures, note and rules have been used to pinpoint their universal importance even today. Also frequent tabular representations and arrow-indicators (specially) have been applied for the first time in any book as one of the most effective and relevant technical tools to simplify the contexts of the chapters and let learners grasp everything quickly and confidently.
