ENGLISH books never fail to make honorable mention of a "roast of beef," "a leg of mutton," "a dish of potatoes," "a dish of tea," etc., while with us the abundance of such things gave them, we thought, not enough importance to be particularized. Still my reminiscences extend to these. Every Virginia housewife knew how to compound all the various dishes in Mrs. Randolph's cookery book, and our tables were filled with every species of meat and vegetable to be found on a plantation, with every kind of cakes, jellies, and blanc-mange to be concocted out of eggs, butter, and cream, besides an endless catalogue of preserves, sweetmeats, pickles, and condiments. So that in the matter of good living, both as to abundance and the manner of serving, a Virginia plantation could not be excelled. The first specialty being good loaf bread, there was always a hot loaf for breakfast, hot corn bread for dinner, and a hot loaf for supper. Every house was famed for its loaf bread, and said a gentleman once to me: "Although at each place it is superb, yet each loaf differs from another loaf, preserving distinct characteristics which would enable me to distinguish, instantly, should there be a convention of loaves, the Oaklands loaf from the Greenfield loaf, and the Avenel loaf from the Rustic Lodge loaf." And apropos of this gentleman, who, it is needless to add, was a celebrated connoisseur in this matter of loaf bread, it was a noticeable fact with our cook that whenever he came to our house, the bread in trying to do its best always did its worst! Speaking of bread, another gentleman expressed his belief that at the last great day it will be found that more housewives will be punished on account of light-bread than anything else; for he knew...

A vine, which had climbed the round pillar and twined its tendrils about the porch's edge, set waving by the slight motion, sent a shower of scarlet leaves about the young man below; one uttered upon his breast, he caught it and held it over his heart as if it were a message from her to him; and then he fastened it in his button-hole. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Daughter of the Elm: A Tale of Western Virginia Before the War In authorizing a reprint of the Daughter of the Elm, in deference to a persistent de mand, the author craves leave to say a word of grateful acknowledgment for the attering reception the book has met. No one knows better than he that the work has but slender claim to literary merit; yet it appears to have supplied a want. It seems there is in it a similitude behind which many readers think they recognize real incidents, persons and places. But this friendly reception has not been confined to those who found this element of personal and local interest. Copies have gone into nearly every State in the Union, and some across the sea. Many letters have come from readers who knew nothing of the 10 cal similitude expressing their pleasure in the perusal; others from readers who were curious to confirm their conjectures as. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Virginia Girl in the Civil War, 1861-1865: Being a Record of the Actual Experiences of the Wife of a Confederate Officer This history was told over the tea-cups. One winter, in the South, - I had for my neigh bor a gentle, little brown-haired lady, Who spent many evenings at my fireside, as I at hers, where with bits of needlework in our hands we gossiped away as women will. I discovered in her an unconscious heroine, arid her Civil War experiences made ever an in teresting topic. Wishing to share with others the reminiscences she gave me, I seek to pre sent them here in her own words. Just as they stand, they are, I believe, unique, pos sessing lat once the charm of romance and the veracity of history. They supply a graph ic, if artless, picture of the social life of one of the most interesting and dramatic periods of our national existence. The stories were not related in strict chronological sequence. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Dorothy South: A Love Story of Virginia Just Before the War It was a perfect day of the kind that Mr. Lowell has celebrated in song - "a day in June." It was, moreover, a day glorified even beyond Mr. Lowell's imagining, by the incomparable climate of south side Virginia. A young man of perhaps seven and twenty, came walking with vigor down the narrow roadway, swinging a stick which he had paused by the wayside to cut. The road ran at this point through a luxuriantly growing woodland, with borders of tangled undergrowth and flowers on either side, and with an orchestra of bird performers all around. The road was a public highway, though it would never have been taken for such in any part of the world except in a south side county of Virginia in the late fifties. Book excerpt: Mrs Dalloway, Virginia Woolf's fourth novel, offers the reader an impression of a single June day in London in 1923. Clarissa Dalloway, the wife of a Conservative member of parliament, is preparing to give an evening party, while the shell-shocked Septimus Warren Smith hears the birds in Regent's Park chattering in Greek. There seems to be nothing, except perhaps London, to link Clarissa and Septimus. She is middle-aged and prosperous, with a sheltered happy life behind her; Smith is young, poor, and driven to hatred of himself and the whole human race. Yet both share a terror of existence, and sense the pull of death. The world of Mrs Dalloway is evoked in Woolf's famous stream of consciousness style, in a lyrical and haunting language which has made this, from its publication in 1925, one of her most popular novels.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Douglass Farm: Juvenile Story of Life in Virginia There is no "Home Book" for Christmas and New Year's Day; but, instead of a "proverbial tale," Cousin Alice greets you with one that she has read and approved, and commends to all who have her own volumes on their book-shelves. In her Christmas story four years ago - a long time for little people to remember, - she promised some day to give a description of the Old Virginia Homestead in which it was written. That was in the introduction to "Patient Waiting no Loss," - which will prove true in this instance; for the story of Douglass Farm describes these very scenes - the old Hall, the lawn, the avenue, the chubby little negro children who ran to open the carriage gate in our drives, the "Aunties" and "Uncles" of the large kitchen department, - the bountiful Christmas cheer, and the little people for whom it was made ready. All this is described by the young hostess who welcomed her to "Margret Hall," - and far better than Cousin Alice would have been able to, inasmuch as it was her birthplace and childhood's home. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Washington: A Virginia Cavalier The purpose Of the author has been not to lay stress upon the so -called' 'true George Washington, or the great planter as he over saw his plantation or read the London markets; not even to lay emphasis on the great soldier as he flamed forth in war, or the first president as he marked the pathway of the new republic. The chief aim has been to point out those qualities which endeared him to his generation, to the end that boys and girls may have stirred in them some of the affection and admiration accorded Washington by those of his own time. This is no easy task. Americans have placed Washington on a pedestal. Some of his biographers have idealized him so that he seems a demi - god. Others, in trying to avoid this mistake and give a true story, have been too realistic and have pictured only that which was commonplace in his life, calling attention to little human weaknesses which at certain times and under some circum stances he gave expression to. But you can no more tell a true life story Of a man by magnifying his faults than by overrating his virtues.
