Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A German-English Medical Thesaurus: Or Treasure of Single and Compound Medical Words and Terms, With Dialogues, Idiomatic Phrases and Proverbs, Etc;, Etc From the frequent inquiries coming ta me cdncerning the nature of a convenient manual like the following, I could not mistake the suggestion, that a book of this, kind was'a great desideratum. By the advice of a few friends, whom I consulted regarding this subject, and from the in creasing conviction that the book was positively needed, I felt encouraged to undertake the work, although the task of writing such a book seemed to me not altogether without difficulty. The success Of my Improved Method and Com plete Manual for the Systematic and Practical Study of the German Language, however, filled me with confidence, giving me also the sure and true basis for the practical con struction Of this work. In regard to the various parts of the book, much labor was necessary for the information I desired to present, and to what extent this had to be done, can be judged from the manifold contents of the book, dem onstrating also that the parts and subjects treated, were what the scope of such a work seemed to demand. The German and English indexes alone contain over twenty thou sand words. For accurate and convenient reference I have added, at the close of the book, the complete schedule of declensions and list Of irregular verbs of my German Gram mar. The reason for making this addition arose from the conviction that if persons studying or having studied the German Language, on the one hand, can classify a noun at sight by looking at the schedule of the terminations of each declension, in as much as there are four different classes of declensions in German, after which the nouns must be declined, wherefore every representative noun in this work has attached the number of the respective class Of declension, to which it belongs; and on the other hand such persons also know the irregular verbs and can readily refer by looking at the schedules of conjugations Of these verbs, 'to the various changes they undergo in the processof conjugation in the various tenses, etc., they certainly have overcome two of the foremost difficulties in the study of this language. To study a language effectively and suc cessfully is to study its various parts Of speech. Though these are nominally the same in German as in English, there is still a vast difference in the extent Of the study these various parts require in order to become familiar with them for ready comprehension in reading and in speaking the language. The study of the German articles, for in stance, the first of the ten parts of speech, requires infinitely more study in German than in English, because in English there is but one article for the three genders, masculine, fem inine and neuter, but in German every gender has a Special article which is declined differently in each Of the four cases, Nominative, Genitive, Dative and Accusative in the singular. There are besides many definite words standing often in the place Of the definite articles, declined like these, and many indefinite words standing Often in place Of the indefinite articles, declined like these in the singular, but like the definite articles in the plural. To study thoroughly and successfully these and other complicated and difficult parts Of Speech in the German Language cannot be accom plished by so-called easy-phrase-object-picture-methods. There must be faithful and persistent study with the aid Of a thorough grammar, I am frank to say, like mine, not only the latest, but also the most complete in the market. And the pronunciation of the words of the German Language can only be acquired from the lips Of a competent teacher, a native German. It cannot be taught by parrot-method or burlesque sound-imitation in letters and words having no real existence and hanging merely like spiderwebs in the mind, etc.
Download or read book A Thesaurus of English Word Roots written by Horace Gerald Danner and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2014-03-27 with total page 1007 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Horace G. Danner’s A Thesaurus of English Word Roots is a compendium of the most-used word roots of the English language. As Timothy B. Noone notes in his foreword: “Dr. Danner’s book allows you not only to build up your passive English vocabulary, resulting in word recognition knowledge, but also gives you the rudiments for developing your active English vocabulary, making it possible to infer the meaning of words with which you are not yet acquainted. Your knowledge can now expand and will do so exponentially as your awareness of the roots in English words and your corresponding ability to decode unfamiliar words grows apace. This is the beginning of a fine mental linguistic library: so enjoy!” In A Thesaurus of English Word Roots, all word roots are listed alphabetically, along with the Greek or Latin words from which they derive, together with the roots’ original meanings. If the current meaning of an individual root differs from the original meaning, that is listed in a separate column. In the examples column, the words which contain the root are then listed, starting with their prefixes, for example, dysacousia, hyperacousia. These root-starting terms then are followed by terms where the root falls behind the word, e.g., acouesthesia and acoumeter. These words are followed by words where the root falls in the middle or the end, as in such terms as bradyacusia and odynacusis.. In this manner, A Thesaurus of English Word Roots places the word in as many word families as there are elements in the word. This work will interest linguists and philologists and anyone interested in the etymological aspects of English language.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Books are still among the most important cultural achievements of humanity. Their invention was as important as the Internet: for the first time, a mass transfer of information became possible. Education, science, research, but also entertainment was based on a new revolutionary basis. Books are changing society until today. The technical possibilities of mass printing led to a radical increase in titles in the 18th and 19th centuries. Nevertheless, the conditions were still very different than today: Who wrote a book at that time, often wrote a life's work. This is reflected in the high quality of old books. Unfortunately, books age. Paper is not made for eternity. Therefore, we have made it our mission to preserve the book of knowledge of humanity and to make old books available in high quality at low prices

Download or read book On Their Own Terms written by Benjamin A. Elman and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 2009-07-01 with total page 606 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In On Their Own Terms, Benjamin A. Elman offers a much-needed synthesis of early Chinese science during the Jesuit period (1600-1800) and the modern sciences as they evolved in China under Protestant influence (1840s-1900). By 1600 Europe was ahead of Asia in producing basic machines, such as clocks, levers, and pulleys, that would be necessary for the mechanization of agriculture and industry. In the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, Elman shows, Europeans still sought from the Chinese their secrets of producing silk, fine textiles, and porcelain, as well as large-scale tea cultivation. Chinese literati borrowed in turn new algebraic notations of Hindu-Arabic origin, Tychonic cosmology, Euclidian geometry, and various computational advances. Since the middle of the nineteenth century, imperial reformers, early Republicans, Guomindang party cadres, and Chinese Communists have all prioritized science and technology. In this book, Elman gives a nuanced account of the ways in which native Chinese science evolved over four centuries, under the influence of both Jesuit and Protestant missionaries. In the end, he argues, the Chinese produced modern science on their own terms.
