Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1502, Christopher Columbus named Costa Rica, and while gold and silver never materialized to justify the moniker of rich coast in purely economic terms, scientists and ecotravelers alike have long appreciated its incredible wealth. Wealth in Costa Rica is best measured by its biodiversityhome to a dizzying number of plants and animals, many endemic, it s a country that has long encouraged and welcomed researchers from the world over, and is exemplary in the creation and commitment to indigenous conservation and management programs. Costa Rica is considered to have the best preserved natural resources in Latin America. Approximately nine percent (about 1,000,000 acres) of Costa Rica has been protected in 15 national parks, and a comparable amount of land is protected as wildlife refuges, forest reserves or Indian reservations. This long-awaited synthesis of Costa Rican ecosystems is an authoritative presentation of the paleoecology, biogeography, structure, conservation, and sustainable use of Costa Rica s ecosystems. It systematically covers the entire range of Costa Rica s natural and managed, terrestrial, freshwater and marine ecosystems, including its island systems (Cocos Islands), the Atlantic and Pacific oceans and shores (coasts, coral reefs, mangrove forests), its lowlands (dry, season and wet forests), its highlands (the northern volcanoes and southern Talamanca s), and its estuaries, rivers, lakes, swamps and bogs. The volume s integrated, comprehensive format will be welcomed by tropical and temperate biologists alike, by biogeographers, plant and animal ecologists, marine biologists, conservation biologists, foresters, policy-makers and all scientists, natural history specialists and all with an interest in Costa Rica s ecosystems."

Book Geomorphology and Volcanology of Costa Rica

Download or read book Geomorphology and Volcanology of Costa Rica written by Jean Pierre Bergoeing and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2017-03-01 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Geomorphology and Volcanology of Costa Rica is the product of more than 30 years of research explaining the evolution of the quaternary relief of a geomorphologically diverse country. The book details the physical landscape of Costa Rica, with an emphasis on potential threats to the landscape, such as earthquakes, landslides, floods, and sea level rise. The book answers questions on the climate changes associated with the intense volcanism that affects this country. Geomorphologists, geologists, geographers, and students who specialize in the Earth Sciences will benefit from knowing the geomorphology of Costa Rica, not only as a case study, but also for the lessons it offers on climate change and worldwide geological history. Includes graphs, maps, and photos that illustrate the most relevant phenomena Provides detailed description of the different regions of the country, each with its own tectonic and modeling characteristics Offers a detailed presentation of the geomorphological characteristics of Costa Rica

Book An Introduction to Tropical Rain Forests

Download or read book An Introduction to Tropical Rain Forests written by T. C. Whitmore and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 1998-03-26 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This new edition of Whitmore's classic introduction to tropical rain forests has been comprehensively revised and updated, reflecting the changes which have taken place since it was first published in 1990. The sections on human impact have been extended, including a new global assessment of deforestation, and details of new research on biodiversity and conservation. The book remains unique in linking rain forest biology and ecology with silviculture, and with concerns over sustainable resource utilization and the future of the tropical rain forests. Accessibly written and illustrated throughout, it is a must for biology and geography students, and anyone who seeks to know more about the nature and importance of the world's tropical rain forests.

Book World Geographical Scheme for Recording Plant Distributions

Download or read book World Geographical Scheme for Recording Plant Distributions written by R. K. Brummitt and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This scheme meets the need for a standard yet adaptable system of geographical units for use in recording plant distributions and arranging specimens. Because a purely political arrangement cannot meet all the needs of botanists, the scheme's arrangement compromises between a politically and a phytogeographically oriented system. It identifies geographic units worldwide in a four-level hierarchy, incorporating continents, regions, provinces and countries. Each geographical unit at each level has its own numeric or alphanumeric code. The scheme is presented in five tables, the recognized geographical units are shown in 17 maps, and a gazetteer relates over 2,100 names to the overall system.

Book Field Guide to Samos and the Menderes Massif

Download or read book Field Guide to Samos and the Menderes Massif written by Klaus Gessner and published by Geological Society of America. This book was released on 2011 with total page 60 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this field-trip guide we explore the tectonics of Samos and the Menderes Massif, two fascinating areas within the eastern Mediterranean section of the Tethyan orogen. We include detailed outcrop descriptions, maps, and diagrams to explore along-strike variations in the Hellenide-Anatolide orogen, including the architecture of the Early Tertiary Alpine nappe stack and its strong Miocene extensional overprint. The suggested itinerary is based on the 2010 Geological Society of America Field Forum "Significance of Along-Strike Variations for the 3-D Architecture of Orogens: The Hellenides and Anatolides in the Eastern Mediterranean." We start the outcrop descriptions with Day 1 in Samos, where, untypically for the N-S-stretched Aegean region, Miocene extension is E-W. We describe a section in western Samos, where the Cycladic Blueschist Unit is in contact with the underlying External Hellenides along a large-scale thrust, reactivated as a Miocene top-east extensional shear zone. The focus of Day 2 is on high-pressure assemblages in northern Samos. The following three days explore the Anatolide Belt in western Turkey where the Menderes nappes-also known as the Menderes Massif-form the tectonic footwall below the Cycladic Blueschist Unit. The outcrops in western Anatolia include the Cycladic Blueschist Unit in the area around Selcuk (Day 3) and sections across the Bozdaĝ and Aydin Mountains including the Kuzey and Güney detachment faults and the Cycladic Menderes Thrust (Days 4 and 5). Outcrops on Day 6 showcase structures along the southern margin of the Menderes Massif in the Milas-Selimiye area.
