Book excerpt: "A Gay and Gray Anthology looks back to record the feelings, struggle, strategies and adventures of the elders of our LGBTQ community. Its description of the world that existed before diversity became a watchword enchants us with its insight and originality. This anthology grew out of the desire to preserve and celebrate out heritage; as time passes these memories become ever more precious. These artifacts of the mind take many forms as evidenced by this publication. A Gay and Gray Anthology includes poetry, fiction, memoir, social criticism, and even a performance piece. The offerings are born of the heart, yet there is humor as well. Hopefully, there is something for everyone."--Page 4 of cover.

Book Beyond the Shades of Gray

Download or read book Beyond the Shades of Gray written by Dean Bailey and published by WestBow Press. This book was released on 2011-12-12 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Beyond the Shades of Gray is based upon Christian fundamentals and beliefs. It was not written to convince anyone that homosexuality is "wrong." It was written primarily to assist those who are inwardly convinced that their own homosexuality is "wrong for them." Over 10 years in the personal journey of its writing, the author uses practical applications of Bible scripture throughout the book, without religiosity. Scripture is used to confront various aspects of this very controversial subjecthead-on. Therefore, the author makes no apologies for the portions of this book that may seem to be more graphic in nature than your average Christian book. Homosexuality is a subject that absolutely needs to be dealt with truthfully, and without religious avoidance of difficult topics. If you are a person who has ever had doubts or questions about your sexual orientation or behavior, then what the author has written here is for you. The work contains a wealth of practical, biblical principles, and also includes information for women. But the book is otherwise a work written by a man, for other men who also desire freedom and heterosexual restoration from their own unwanted homosexual behaviors. "What we long for is a deep and heartfelt sense of brotherhood," and the author proposes that the real issues behind homosexual behaviors are not about sex! Gods love (agpe love) always has both a balance of truth, and a responsibility that goes along with it. In this book, I take the same agpe love approach toward homosexuality, as Jesus did in the Book of John, Chapter 8, with the woman caught in the sin of adultery. Jesus showed great love and compassion toward the woman, both in the way that he dealt with the hypocritical crowd that had brought her to him, and in the way he spoke to her as he sent her on her way, and told her, Go, and sin no more. - Dean Bailey

Book Business Not Politics

Download or read book Business Not Politics written by Katherine Sender and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2004 with total page 329 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Advocates and critics have looked at the boom in the gay market with both excitement and trepidation. For some, gay and lesbian themes in advertising represent mainstream validation of their existence, while others are concerned that marketers have misrepresented the gay community by depicting it as white, male, and wealthy. Critics also suggest that the phenomenon of gay consumerism runs counter to progressive gay activism. Sender expands on these concerns, arguing that what is at stake is not only acceptance and civil rights but also the very meaning of GLBT sexual identification." "Sender's work draws on interviews with 45 professionals who work in gay marketing and media, including magazine publishers, ad directors, sales representatives, and public relations consultants. The book analyzes and gives an insider's account of how marketers conceive of gay and lesbian consumers and articulate the "gayness" of certain products."--BOOK JACKET.

Book City of Friends

Download or read book City of Friends written by Simon LeVay and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 1995 with total page 478 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: City of Friends offers a practical, intelligent, and well-informed overview of what it means to be gay or lesbian. The authors seek to help gay men and women, as well as their families and friends, to better understand the institutions and communities that make up the most culturally and ethnically diverse minority in America today.Beginning with basic concepts, LeVay and Nonas define the words "homosexual," "gay," "lesbian," and "bisexual" and discuss the various patterns of homosexuality in different cultures around the world. They relate the history of the gay and lesbian community in the United States, and its struggle for equal rights and social acceptance, before tackling the question -- still highly controversial -- of what determines an individual's sexual orientation.City of Friends describes the great diversity within the gay and lesbian community: Life in the "gay ghetto." Old lesbians in rural hideaways. Gay resorts. A "town without men." Gay and lesbian Latinos, African-Americans, Asian-Americans, and Native Americans -- what it means to be a minority within a minority. Lesbian and gay youth, the elderly, the deaf. Bisexuals and transsexuals. Academics, drag queens, technoqueers, publishers, softball players -- all make their appearance in these pages.LeVay and Nonas continue with a discussion of health issues (especially of the AIDS epidemic and the community's response to it), the law, and gay and lesbian politics. They describe the cultural achievements of lesbians and gay men -- their art, literature, theater, music, and dance. Finally they take a look at the spiritual life of gays and lesbians, both within and outside of organized religion.

Book The Life and Afterlife of Gay Neighborhoods

Download or read book The Life and Afterlife of Gay Neighborhoods written by Alex Bitterman and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-03-19 with total page 434 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This open access book examines the significance of gay neighborhoods (or ‘gayborhoods’) from critical periods of formation during the gay liberation and freedom movements of the 1960s and 1970s, to proven durability through the HIV/AIDS pandemic during the 1980s and 1990s, to a mature plateau since 2000. The book provides a framework for contemplating the future form and function of gay neighborhoods. Social and cultural shifts within gay neighborhoods are used as a framework for understanding the decades-long struggle for LGBTQ+ rights and equality. Resulting from gentrification, weakening social stigma, and enhanced rights for LGBTQ+ people, gay neighborhoods have recently become “less gay,” following a 50-year period of resilience. Meanwhile, other neighborhoods are becoming “more gay,” due to changing preferences of LGBTQ+ individuals and a propensity for LGBTQ+ families to form community in areas away from established gayborhoods. The current ‘plateau’ in the evolution of gay neighborhoods is characterized by generational differences—between Baby Boom pioneers and Millennials who favour broad inclusivity—signaling various possible trajectories for the future ‘afterlife’ of these important LGBTQ+ urban spaces. The complicating impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic provides a point of comparison for lessons learned from gay neighborhoods and the LGBTQ+ community that bravely endured the onset of the HIV/AIDS pandemic. This book will be of interest to students and scholars in various disciplines—including sociology, social work, anthropology, gender and sexuality, LGTBQ+ and queer studies, as well as urban geography, architecture, and city planning—and to policymakers and advocates concerned with LGBTQ+ rights and social justice.

Book excerpt: Featuring fiction, poetry, nonfiction, and comics by 48 writers from around the world, QDA: A Queer Disability Anthology proves that intersectionality isn't just a buzzword. It's a penetrating and unforgettable look into the hearts and souls of those defiant enough to explore their own vulnerabilities and demonstrate their own strengths. Here is a gathering of people with the transformative-and political-power of love that transcends gender and ability. Ignorance is the biggest barrier. "An anthology often creates a community. In this respect, QDA is truly groundbreaking because it brings two wonderful communities together. There is not a single style, genre, or opinion in the book, but an orchestra of voices. Their seminal works mirror-and do not mirror-each other. Taken together, they light a brilliant path of honesty." -Jennifer Bartlett, co-editor of Beauty Is a Verb: The New Poetry of Disability
