Download or read book Nowhere Girl written by Cheryl Diamond and published by Algonquin Books. This book was released on 2021-06-15 with total page 393 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: By the age of nine, I will have lived in more than a dozen countries, on five continents, under six assumed identities. I’ll know how a document is forged, how to withstand an interrogation, and most important, how to disappear . . . To the young Cheryl Diamond, life felt like one big adventure, whether she was hurtling down the Himalayas in a rickety car or mingling with underworld fixers. Her family appeared to be an unbreakable gang of five. One day they were in Australia, the next in South Africa, the pattern repeating as they crossed continents, changed identities, and erased their pasts. What Diamond didn’t yet know was that she was born into a family of outlaws fleeing from the highest international law enforcement agencies, a family with secrets that would eventually catch up to all of them. By the time she was in her teens, Diamond had lived dozens of lives and lies, but as she grew older, love and trust turned to fear and violence, and her family—the only people she had in the world—began to unravel. She started to realize that her life itself might be a big con, and the people she loved, the most dangerous of all. With no way out and her identity burned so often that she had no proof she even existed, all that was left was a girl from nowhere. Surviving would require her to escape, and to do so Diamond would have to unlearn all the rules she grew up with. Wild, heartbreaking, and often unexpectedly funny, Nowhere Girl is an impossible-to-believe true story of self-discovery and triumph.

Download or read book Encyclopedia of the Underground Railroad written by J. Blaine Hudson and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2015-01-09 with total page 318 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fugitive slaves were reported in the American colonies as early as the 1640s, and escapes escalated with the growth of slavery over the next 200 years. As the number of fugitives rose, the Southern states pressed for harsher legislation to prevent escapes. The Fugitive Slave Act of 1850 criminalized any assistance, active or passive, to a runaway slave--yet it only encouraged the behavior it sought to prevent. Friends of the fugitive, whose previous assistance to runaways had been somewhat haphazard, increased their efforts at organization. By the onset of the Civil War in 1861, the Underground Railroad included members, defined stops, set escape routes and a code language. From the abolitionist movement to the Zionville Baptist Missionary Church, this encyclopedia focuses on the people, ideas, events and places associated with the interrelated histories of fugitive slaves, the African American struggle for equality and the American antislavery movement. Information is drawn from primary sources such as public records, document collections, slave autobiographies and antebellum newspapers.

Download or read book Lessons for My Daughter written by Sophia N. Johnson PhD and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2015-12-09 with total page 63 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We often go through life thinking there is a set order for how we do things. That may work some of the time, but it can leave us unprepared to accept and thrive on the unexpected. In her semiautobiographical book, Lessons for My Daughter: A Mothers Wisdom on Growing in Grace, author Sophia N. Johnson, PhD, underscores the redeeming value of all life experiences in whatever variation they emerge. A public tribute to her daughter, the essays in this book is also an emotional and spiritual tribute to daughters everywhere. The journey begins with her graduate school days conducting fieldwork in India. There she studied the values of the Vedic religion, one of the major traditions that shaped Hinduism, and learned acceptance and what it means to pay attention to her thoughts and feelings without judging them. She also learned to appreciate the deeper cognitive value of mindfulness, by embracing the spiritual foundation of her own Christian faith as an approach to understanding lifes ups and downs, a lesson she wants all daughters to learn and share as a basis for a life well lived. The narrative moves from India to the West Indies, with Johnson creatively re-imagining family life and weaving intellectual insights into her own complex identity, then finding grace to love and honor her father after his death. She reflects on the beauty of meditation and yoga. The final essay is dedicated to kindness, compassion, service and other sacred truths for living a purposeful life. Above all, erudite values and principles are honored as she shares her own awakening through the practice of prayer and mindfulness, stillness and grace Lessons for My Daughter: A Mothers Wisdom on Growing in Grace is a warm reflection on finding grace. Readers will grow into appreciating all life experiences as lessons in development, but also learn to relax and savor the enduring insights of lifes surprises.
Download or read book Critical Children written by Richard Locke and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2013-07-16 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The ten novels explored in Critical Children portray children so vividly that their names are instantly recognizable. Richard Locke traces the 130-year evolution of these iconic child characters, moving from Oliver Twist, David Copperfield, and Pip in Great Expectations to Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn; from Miles and Flora in The Turn of the Screw to Peter Pan and his modern American descendant, Holden Caulfield; and finally to Lolita and Alexander Portnoy. "It's remarkable," writes Locke, "that so many classic (or, let's say, unforgotten) English and American novels should focus on children and adolescents not as colorful minor characters but as the intense center of attention." Despite many differences of style, setting, and structure, they all enlist a particular child's story in a larger cultural narrative. In Critical Children, Locke describes the ways the children in these novels have been used to explore and evade large social, psychological, and moral problems. Writing as an editor, teacher, critic, and essayist, Locke demonstrates the way these great novels work, how they spring to life from their details, and how they both invite and resist interpretation and provoke rereading. Locke conveys the variety and continued vitality of these books as they shift from Victorian moral allegory to New York comic psychoanalytic monologue, from a child who is an agent of redemption to one who is a narcissistic prisoner of guilt and proud rage.

Especially an exciting new identity in government Witness Relocation for a couple of newlyweds who barely know each other, or themselves anymore. Just ask disgruntled Arizona Relocation subjects Lorenzo and Dr. Lucretia Valentino, formerly of beautiful Beach City, Indiana. Much like the merciless Sonoran Desert, things can get a little heated. It can also be kind of a drag, stuck in the middle of it. Or more precisely a dreary Nowheresville cul-de-sac apparently home more to the dead than the living. Throw into the mix a suspiciously paternal shrink and a sleazy serial killer from their permanently sealed past, an outlaw biker kingpin, a mysteriously absentee case manager, a precocious pair of newborn twins, the meddling long-distance in-laws, a cranky lady doc who despises the new government job not working with her beloved cadavers, a hopelessly haunted so-called safe house, and the nightmarish fugitive fun is just beginning.
