Book A Frying Pan Is Not a Gift

Download or read book A Frying Pan Is Not a Gift written by Bob Borneman and published by WestBow Press. This book was released on 2011-11-30 with total page 56 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is a big difference between wisdom and knowledge. Knowledge is what you get from reading books, going to school (if you stay awake) and touching the stove to see if it is hot, even though it is glowing red. Wisdom is correctly answering the question from your wife honey, do these jeans make my butt look big? If you have not yet attained wisdom, the answer to this question is not no honey, it aint the jeans; its that bag of Oreos you ate last night. Since the average marriage only lasts 8 years, I feel blessed to still be married to the same person for 32 years (and counting). Both my parents and my wifes parents never divorced. I do recall my father in-law stating on the occasion of his 50th wedding anniversary I have never considered divorce, murder possibly, but never divorce. Humor runs deep and wide throughout our family. This book is written for the guys who are married, are getting married or think they want to be married, so they will not make some of the same mistakes I made when trying to learn how to be married.

Book The Gift Economy

Download or read book The Gift Economy written by David Cheal and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-07-03 with total page 243 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Until recently we have known more about gift giving practices in pre-industrial societies than about those of industrial western society. In this book, first published in 1988, David Cheal shows that the process of present giving and receiving is a vital element in contemporary social life, relevant to some of the most important theoretical traditions in sociology, particularly those of Durkheim and Weber, and to the social constructionism of Peter Berger and Thomas Luckmann. This volume is the result of a major study of gift rituals carried out by David Cheal and his associates in which general themes are richly illustrated with details from individual case histories gathered during the research. It is highly significant that in western society women are more active gift givers than men and, while their voices explain how emotions and interests are interrelated within the gift economy, the author shows how that in turn is related to current theories about family, gender and religion.

Book excerpt: The inaugural winner of Simon & Schuster’s Books Like Us contest, Elba Iris Pérez’s lyrical, cross-cultural coming-of-age debut novel explores a young girl’s childhood between 1950s Puerto Rico and a small Massachusetts factory town. Andrea Rodríguez is nine years old when her mother whisks her and her brother, Pablo, away from Woronoco, the tiny Massachusetts factory town that is the only home they’ve known. With no plan and no money, she leaves them with family in the mountainside villages of Puerto Rico and promises to return. Months later, when Andrea and Pablo are brought back to Massachusetts, they find their hometown significantly changed. As they navigate the rifts between their family’s values and all-American culture and face the harsh realities of growing up, they must embrace both the triumphs and heartache that mark the journey to adulthood. A heartfelt, evocative portrait of another side of life in 1950s America, The Things We Didn’t Know establishes Elba Iris Pérez as a sensational new literary voice.

Leviticus contains a clear statement of the Lord's intentions towards the children of Israel. He considered them to be His people! Book From The Frying Pan Into The Fire

Download or read book From The Frying Pan Into The Fire written by Judith Mawoko and published by FriesenPress. This book was released on 2018-03-20 with total page 137 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Told with clarity, humour and insight, From the Frying Pan into the Fire lets us look into the turbulent history of Zimbabwe through the eyes of a native Zimbabwean educator. Born in a rural village in 1965, in what was then Rhodesia, young Judith grew up in a large and extended family of subsistence farmers. She remembers her early years as being carefree, peaceful and close to nature, and looks back fondly on village marriage celebrations, music, and dancing. Like most in her village, she is unaware of the fomenting resentment against white minority rule, which has seen the best farmland handed over to white settlers brought into the former British colony. This heartfelt social history takes us behind the scenes to show how families were separated, villages bombed and strafed, people starved, civilians massacred and indigenous sons forced into the Rhodesian army. It tells us about the barb-wired compounds built and encircled with landmines to keep villagers from giving food or support to the freedom fighters. This first-hand account takes us into the horror of the 15-year guerilla war that finally led to Zimbabwean independence in April 1980, a war that ended Judith’s childhood and thrust her into the realities of a brutal 37-year dictatorship that would see rampant corruption and civil strife, which is still widespread today. Teachers and students of African history will find a modern day Orwellian Animal Farm in these pages, one that shows no indications of democracy anytime soon.
