This book was released on 2016-10-03 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Frenchman's Walk Through Ireland, 1796-7: Promenade D'un Francais Dans L'irlande Just at the beginning of his; Irish journey he had the misfortune to lose, by death, his friend and patron, and for a moment he hesitated. But he had nothing to do - had youth and good spirits for his possession, and he decided to trust Providence and proceed. An Amenhotep may lead the troops of Egypt to victory over Syria, Mesopotamia and Nubia, with consequences vastly important to Amenhotep and Egypt and the subjected peoples; and the story of the conquests leaves us cold. But, out of a tomb of his time we take a string of beads or a child's doll, and we touch hands with the old Egyptians at once. And so, if our exile had heavily recorded only the important matters of trade and political economy of Ireland of his time, it would have been wise to let him sleep quietly in the dust of the years. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: W HAT I H A V E attempted in this book is a survey of song; the kind of song which one finds variously described as 'concert', 'art', or sometimes even 'classical song'. 'Concert song' seems the most useful, certainly the least inexact or misleading, of some descriptions, especially since 'art song' sounds primly off putting, and 'classical song' really ought to be used only to refer to songs written during the classical period, i. e. the 18th century. Concert song clearly means the kind of songs one hears sung at concerts or recitals. Addressing myself to the general music-lover who, though he possesses no special knowledge of the song literature, is never theless interested enough in songs and their singers to attend recitals of Lieder or of songs in various languages, I have naturally confined myself to that period of time in which the vast majority of these songs was composed, though not necessarily only to those composers whose songs have survived to be remembered in recital programmes today. I suppose this to be roughly the three centuries covered by the years 1650-1950, though most of the songs we, as audiences, know and love were composed in the middle of this period, in other words in the 19th century.

Download or read book Women Composers of Classical Music written by Mary F. McVicker and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2011-02-14 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As early as the 1500s, a surprising number of women have composed classical music. Many were successful, finding venues for both publishing and performing their music; others found the social barriers for women impossible to overcome. This book provides access to these composers, both well known and obscure. Arranged chronologically by era, the profiles are further divided into countries. For each female composer within a country, a brief biographical sketch is provided, as well as a description of her body of work. This text also includes an extensive timeline of operatic works by female composers.
