Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Fragment on the Human Mind There are many defects in this little book, and many things might be said to show that these defects may form its chief interest. With this paraphrase of a Captatio which has become classical in English literature, I should like to offer this Fragment to the attention of thoughtful and benevolent readers. For indeed, some apology and some explanations are needed in putting forward so incomplete and so small a contribution to the ever-increasing volume of Philosophical Writings of the present day. As these explanations refer largely to my earlier writings and also to matters which are personal, I propose to keep them out of the text of the Treatise, bringing them together in this prefatory note. In this way they will not disturb the simple course of my argument or trouble the reader with historical references. In the first place, I must go back to my larger work, the 'History of European Thought in the Nineteenth Century,' which was published in four volumes during the years 1896-1914. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Human Mind: In Its Relations With the Brain and Nervous System My Dear Dr. Carpenter, - Whether I have regard to your eminent position as a man of science, to your special attainments as a physiologist, or to your private worth, I know of no one to whom I can inscribe this little work with so much propriety and with such gratification to my own feelings, as to yourself. Although, in the course of independent thought, I have been led to conclusions not altogether in unison with some of those at which you have yourself arrived, I am not the less conscious that I am indebted to you and to your writings for most of the fundamental doctrines expounded in the ensuing pages. Book Elements of the Pathology of the Human Mind Classic Reprint

Download or read book Elements of the Pathology of the Human Mind Classic Reprint written by Thomas Mayo and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-10-19 with total page 84 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elements of the Pathology of the Human Mind The relation of physical phenomena to human happiness is amply investigated in the present day. But the direct and practical effect, which the philosophy of mind is calculated to produce, has received far less systematic enquiry. That this should be the case, might easily be anticipated from the different degree of precision, which the steps made in each of these pursuits are capable of obtaining. And yet, with less public estimation of their value, the few princi ples thus actually obtained are calculated to exert a most beneficial influence on mankind. As instances of such discoveries, I might adduce the supremacy of conscience as established on moral grounds by Dr. Butler; and his hypothesis, that habit strengthens active principles, and weakens passive impressions. It is my object in these pages to bring the philosophy of mind to bear upon the conduct of life in some new points of contact. Book Problems of Life and Mind Classic Reprint

Download or read book Problems of Life and Mind Classic Reprint written by George Henry Lewes and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-18 with total page 512 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Problems of Life and Mind The present volume represents all the remaining manuscript for Problems of Life and Mind so far as it was left by the Author in a state that he would have allowed to be fit for publication. Much of it was intended to be rewritten, and the whole, if it had undergone his revision, would have received that alternate condensation and expansion sure to be needed in a work which has been of many years' growth, and which treats of a continually growing subject. Some repetitions would have been avoided, many arguments would have been better nourished with illustration, and in the Third Problem there would doubtless have been a more evident order in the succession of chapters, the actual arrangement being partly the result of conjecture. The Fourth Problem, of which the later pages were written hardly more than three weeks before the Author's death, is but a fragment it will perhaps not be felt the less worthy of attention by those readers who have followed his previous works with interest and sympathy. In correcting the proof-sheets of this volume the Editor has been generously aided by Dr. Michael F oster and Mr. James Sully. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Analysis of the Phenomena of the Human Mind, Vol. 1 of 2 IN the study of Nature, either mental or physical, the aim of the scientific enquirer is to diminish as much as possible the catalogue of ultimate truths. When, Without doing violence to facts, he is able'to bring one phenomenon within the laws of another; when he can shew that a fact or agency, which seemed to be original and distinct, could have been produced by other'known facts and agencies, acting according to their own laws the enquirer who has arrived at this result, considers himself to have made an important advance in the knowledge Of nature, and to have brought science, in that department, a step nearer to perfection. Other accessions to science, however important practically, are, in a scientificpoint of view, mere additions to the materials this is something done towards perfectn the structure itself. Book Anthroposophy A Fragment

Download or read book Anthroposophy A Fragment written by Rudolf Steiner and published by SteinerBooks. This book was released on 1996-04 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Published in 1904 (CW 10) "Not everyone can immediately achieve spiritual vision; but the discoveries of those who have it can be health-giving life nourishment for all. The results of supersensible knowledge, when properly employed in life, prove to be not impractical, but rather, practical in the highest sense.... The acquisition of higher knowledge is not the end, but the means to an end; the end consists in the attainment, thanks to this knowledge, of greater and truer self-confidence, a higher degree of courage, and a magnanimity and perseverance such as cannot, as a rule, be acquired in the lower world." This is the classic account of the modern Western esoteric path of initiation made public by Steiner in 1904. He begins with the premise that "the capacities by which we can gain insights into the higher worlds lie dormant within each one of us." Steiner carefully and precisely leads the reader from the cultivation of the fundamental soul attitudes of reverence and inner tranquility to the development of inner life through the stages of preparation, illumination, and initiation. Steiner provides practical exercises of inner and outer observation and moral development. By patiently and persistently following his guidelines, new "organs" of soul and spirit begin to form, which reveal the contours of the higher worlds thus far concealed from us. Steiner in this important work becomes a teacher, a counselor, and a friend whose advice is practical, clear, and effective. The challenges we face in life require increasingly deeper levels of understanding, and Steiner's text helps readers to cultivate the capacities for such insights and places them at the service of humanity. This is Steiner's most essential guide to the modern path of initiation he advocated throughout his life. It has been translated into many languages and has inspired hundreds of thousands of readers around the world. How to Know Higher Worlds has been admired by some of the most brilliant minds of our time. "The methods by which a student is prepared for the reception of higher knowledge are minutely prescribed. The direction he is to take is traced with unfading, everlasting letters in the worlds of the spirit where the initiates guard the higher secrets. In ancient times, anterior to our history, the temples of the spirit were also outwardly visible; today, because our life has become so unspiritual, they are not to be found in the world visible to external sight; yet they are present spiritually everywhere, and all who seek may find them." Knowledge of the Higher Worlds and Its Attainment is a translation from German of the written work Wie erlangt man Erkenntnisse der höheren Welten? (GA 10).
