Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Forgotten John Russell: Being Letters to a Man of Business, 1724-1751 Among the many shortcomings and things forgotten in this book, the need of a preface had also been overlooked, and, being required at the last minute, is written almost under protest, and with the consciousness of there being very little more to say. John Russell knew well enough in his lifetime what the 'struggle for existence' meant. Whether he would think it a compliment to be thus dragged out in print to take part in the 'struggle for existence' of the modern book world, is an open question. Perhaps he might, for his thoughts towards his fellow creatures were of the most friendly and Optimistic description, and it may be some expiation of the neglect his descendants have shown him - his career for gotten, the portrait called by his name left frameless and forlorn in the attics - that one of them should have at last taken a little interest in his concerns. Book Heirs to Forgotten Kingdoms

Download or read book Heirs to Forgotten Kingdoms written by Gerard Russell and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2014-11-20 with total page 470 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite its reputation for religious intolerance, the Middle East has long sheltered many distinctive and strange faiths: one regards the Greek prophets as incarnations of God, another reveres Lucifer in the form of a peacock, and yet another believes that their followers are reincarnated beings who have existed in various forms for thousands of years. These religions represent the last vestiges of the magnificent civilizations in ancient history: Persia, Babylon, Egypt in the time of the Pharaohs. Their followers have learned how to survive foreign attacks and the perils of assimilation. But today, with the Middle East in turmoil, they face greater challenges than ever before. In Heirs to Forgotten Kingdoms, former diplomat Gerard Russell ventures to the distant, nearly impassable regions where these mysterious religions still cling to survival. He lives alongside the Mandaeans and Ezidis of Iraq, the Zoroastrians of Iran, the Copts of Egypt, and others. He learns their histories, participates in their rituals, and comes to understand the threats to their communities. Historically a tolerant faith, Islam has, since the early 20th century, witnessed the rise of militant, extremist sects. This development, along with the rippling effects of Western invasion, now pose existential threats to these minority faiths. And as more and more of their youth flee to the West in search of greater freedoms and job prospects, these religions face the dire possibility of extinction. Drawing on his extensive travels and archival research, Russell provides an essential record of the past, present, and perilous future of these remarkable religions.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life of Lord John Russell, Vol. 1 of 2 My Dear Lady Russell, It is now more than two years and a half ago since you did me the honour of asking me whether I would undertake to write the life of Lord John Russell. In doing so you were good enough to promise that 'all private as well as public papers, letters, diaries, would be at [my] disposal.' You subsequently gave me an assurance that, in carrying out my work, I should be free from any conditions, and at liberty to deal with the subject in my own way, and in accordance with my own opinions. In now handing to you these volumes, I desire gratefully to acknowledge the manner in which you have fulfilled your promise and acted on your assurance. You have not only placed at my disposal the private and official papers which are either in your own or in your brother's (Mr. George Elliot's) custody; but you have given me access to diaries and letters of a much more private nature, which have proved of the utmost value to me, but which neither I nor any one - except those who are nearest and dearest to you - could have hoped to have had opened to him. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life of Lord John Russell, Vol. 2 of 2 On July 19, a few days after his return to the Foreign Office, Lord Palmerston wrote 'a despatch to Mr. Bulwer enumerating the available candidates for the Queen of Spain's hand - among whom be included Prince Leopold - and adding that her Majesty's Government only wished the choice to fall on the one most likely to secure the happiness of the Queen and the welfare of the Spanish people. He went on to denounce arbitrary government in Spain, and to intimate a hope that no time would be lost in returning to the ways of the constitution and to obedience to the law. It has perhaps never been noticed that this famous despatch was dated on a Sunday. Lord John received it just as he was going to church. Book Naval Power and British Culture 1760 1850

Download or read book Naval Power and British Culture 1760 1850 written by Roger Morriss and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-05-15 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recent work on the growth of British naval power during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries has emphasised developments in the political, constitutional and financial infrastructure of the British state. Naval Power and British Culture, 1760-1850 takes these considerations one step further, and examines the relationship of administrative culture within government bureaucracy to contemporary perceptions of efficiency in the period 1760-1850. By administrative culture is meant the ideas, attitudes, structures, practices and mores of public employees. Inevitably these changed over time and this shift is examined as the naval departments passed through times of crisis and peace. Focusing on the transition in the culture of government employees in the naval establishments in London - in the Navy and Victualling Offices - as well as the victualling yard towns along the Thames and Medway, Naval Power and British Culture, 1760-1850 concerns itself with attitudes at all levels of the organisation. Yet it is concerned above all with those whose views and conduct are seldom reported, the clerks, artificers, secretaries and commissioners; those employees of government who lived in local communities and took their work experience back home with them. As such, this book illuminates not only the employees of government, but also the society which surrounded and impinged upon naval establishments, and the reciprocal nature of their attitudes and influences.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Early Correspondence of Lord John Russell, Vol. 2: 1805-40 The French have started in conversation notions about territory and recovery of humilia tion of 1815 which are somewhat inconvenient and above all, unreasonable and too late. They had not. However, seen the Protocol (i mean that you begot in a corner), and when they do they must give up such projects. I am on these three great subjects in heart and spirit. Pray do your best to soothe Adair and make him acquiesce in something. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
