Book My Life with Bonnie and Clyde

Download or read book My Life with Bonnie and Clyde written by Blanche Caldwell Barrow and published by University of Oklahoma Press. This book was released on 2012-10-08 with total page 376 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bonnie and Clyde were responsible for multiple murders and countless robberies. But they did not act alone. In 1933, during their infamous run from the law, Bonnie and Clyde were joined by Clyde’s brother Buck Barrow and his wife Blanche. Of these four accomplices, only one—Blanche Caldwell Barrow—lived beyond early adulthood and only Blanche left behind a written account of their escapades. Edited by outlaw expert John Neal Phillips, Blanche’s previously unknown memoir is here available for the first time. Blanche wrote her memoir between 1933 and 1939, while serving time at the Missouri State Penitentiary. Following her death, Blanche’s good friend and the executor of her will, Esther L. Weiser, found the memoir wrapped in a large unused Christmas card. Later she entrusted it to Phillips, who had interviewed Blanche several times before her death. Drawing from these interviews, and from extensive research into Depression-era outlaw history, Phillips supplements the memoir with helpful notes and with biographical information about Blanche and her accomplices.

Book Jersey Folklore Superstitions Volume One

Download or read book Jersey Folklore Superstitions Volume One written by G. J. C. Bois and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2010-06-04 with total page 682 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Published in two volumes, the purpose of Jersey Folklore & Superstitions is three-fold: To bring all the previously published and any non-published material on Jersey folktales and superstitions together in one publication, to expand on the detail of this material and to place it in context by comparing it with similar or more complete traditions from the Gulf of St. Malo as a whole (Guernsey, Normandy and Brittany) and to consider its functions and origins. To this end they are further compared with traditions from Europe generally, with some examples from further afield and with mythologies worldwide. For Jersey readers this work will give an overview of their oral tradition, its significance and how it relates to the body of such traditions within Europe as a whole. For general readers the use of the Island’s traditions as a template for those elsewhere, the process of comparison with those from other regions and the attempt to outline the broad range of sources from which they are drawn, may give an insight into particular areas of folk tradition generally, such as fairy-lore, indigenous sorcery (witchcraft), domestic superstitions and the roles and origins of spectral animals and other beings. For this purpose, most chapters are broadly divided into four main sections. The Jersey material is presented first, followed by that from Guernsey, Normandy and Brittany, followed by an analysis using examples from further afield and from mythology. Each chapter concludes with a review and summary of this material. Liberal quotations of related ‘ditons’ or sayings in Jèrriais (the Jersey Language) are included with each chapter. The author has four previous publications; Jersey Superstitions in Etching & Poetry (hardcover 1981), An Introduction to Channel Islands’ Pewter (softcover 1993), Jersey Maritime Folklore (M/S format, 1996) and Sunbonnets in the Channel Islands & worldwide (CD-R 2005).

Meet Jane. Newly arrived to Birmingham, Alabama, Jane is a broke dog-walker in Thornfield Estates––a gated community full of McMansions, shiny SUVs, and bored housewives. The kind of place where no one will notice if Jane lifts the discarded tchotchkes and jewelry off the side tables of her well-heeled clients. Where no one will think to ask if Jane is her real name. But her luck changes when she meets Eddie Rochester. Recently widowed, Eddie is Thornfield Estates’ most mysterious resident. His wife, Bea, drowned in a boating accident with her best friend, their bodies lost to the deep. Jane can’t help but see an opportunity in Eddie––not only is he rich, brooding, and handsome, he could also offer her the kind of protection she’s always yearned for. Yet as Jane and Eddie fall for each other, Jane is increasingly haunted by the legend of Bea, an ambitious beauty with a rags-to-riches origin story, who launched a wildly successful southern lifestyle brand. How can she, plain Jane, ever measure up? And can she win Eddie’s heart before her past––or his––catches up to her? With delicious suspense, incisive wit, and a fresh, feminist sensibility, The Wife Upstairs flips the script on a timeless tale of forbidden romance, ill-advised attraction, and a wife who just won’t stay buried. In this vivid reimagining of one of literature’s most twisted love triangles, which Mrs. Rochester will get her happy ending?

Book Fred Forest s Utopia

Download or read book Fred Forest s Utopia written by Michael F. Leruth and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2017-09-08 with total page 259 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “France's most famous unknown artist,” the innovative media provocateur Fred Forest, precursor of Eduardo Kac, Jodi, the Yes Men, RT Mark, and the Guerilla Girls. The innovative French media artist and prankster-provocateur Fred Forest first gained notoriety in 1972 when he inserted a small blank space in Le Monde, called it 150 cm2 of Newspaper (150 cm2 de papier journal), and invited readers to fill in the space with their own work and mail their efforts to him. In 1977, he satirized speculation in both the art and real estate markets by offering the first parcel of officially registered “artistic square meters” of undeveloped rural land for sale at an art auction. Although praised by leading media theorists—Vilém Flusser lauded Forest as “the artist who pokes holes in media”—Forest's work has been largely ignored by the canon-making authorities. Forest calls himself “France's most famous unknown artist.” In this book, Michael Leruth offers the first book-length consideration of this iconoclastic artist, examining Forest's work from the 1960s to the present. Leruth shows that Forest chooses alternative platforms (newspapers, mock commercial ventures, video-based interactive social interventions, media hacks and hybrids, and, more recently, the Internet) that are outside the exclusive precincts of the art world. A fierce critic of the French contemporary art establishment, Forest famously sued the Centre Pompidou in 1994 over its opaque acquisition practices. After making foundational contributions to Sociological Art in the 1970s and the Aesthetics of Communication in the 1980s, the pioneering Forest saw the Internet as another way for artists to bypass the art establishment in the 1990s. Arguing that there is a strong utopian quality in Forest's work, Leruth sees this utopianism not as naive or conventional but as a reverse utopianism: rather than envisioning an impossible ideal, Forest reenvisions and probes the quasi-utopia of our media-augented everyday reality. The interface is the symbolic threshold to be crossed with an open mind.

Book excerpt: Based on the Siberian wolf attack of 1927 and told from the point of view of both wolves and humans. It was a Wolf Winter, so deeply cold that forest trails were empty and only humans had enough food to survive. Over 100 wolves, the largest pack ever seen, surround the Siberian village of Pilovo, desperate in their search for game. Pets and farm animals stand alert, villagers sense trouble, the frozen stage is set. This account details each event of the attack, the unrelenting terror, the vicious combat. Neither wolf nor man is safe; neither can imagine the outcome. Arctic cold and savage fighting inflict endless damage on predator and prey. In this isolated wilderness, tucked inside a bleak country, only animal cunning and ruthless perseverance will prevail.
