Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Scotland at the dawn of the 15th century was a wretched spectacle. While the feeble Robert III still clung to his throne, his kingdom rang with the sound of conflict as his son and brother grappled for power. Sir James Douglas of Aberdour, married as he was to the King's illegitimate sister, had to tread a hazardous path through the warring factions. But having a conscience made life harder still. For in those days - and in that company - a conscience could cost a man dear... The second volume of Nigel Tranter's epic House of Stewart trilogy tells of the last days of King Robert III of Scotland and the struggle for his throne.

Download or read book Prince Henry of Prussia Brother of Frederick the Great written by Prof. Chester Verne Easum and published by Pickle Partners Publishing. This book was released on 2018-03-12 with total page 798 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book by renowned Professor of German History, Chester Verne Easum, which was first published in 1942, is devoted to Prince Henry, the younger brother of Prussia’s Frederick the Great. Frederick Henry Louis (1726-1802), commonly known as Henry (Heinrich) also served as a general and statesman, leading Prussian armies in the Silesian Wars and the Seven Years’ War, in which he did not lose a single battle. “The man principally responsible for the achievements of Frederick II of Prussia was Frederick himself. No one else earned for him the title of “Frederick the Great,” Friedrich der Einzige, or “Old Fritz.” Yet he owed much of his success to the work of his predecessors, particularly the Great Elector and Frederick William I, and much to the help his brother Henry gave him. As the rather obscure figure of the younger brother emerges from the shadow of the throne only as the light of investigation is thrown upon it, so Frederick himself takes on a new and in some ways more attractive appearance as his character is more fully revealed by the study of his relationship with Henry. Far from being discredited, he gains more than he loses as a result of this renewed scrutiny. So does Henry.”

Download or read book An Afghan Prince in Victorian England written by R.D. McChesney and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2024-07-25 with total page 441 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1894 Great Britain invited 'Abd al-Rahman Khan, the amir of Afghanistan, to England for a state visit. Then at the height of its imperial might, Britain sought to strengthen ties with the strategically important Afghanistan, which shared a long frontier, not yet a border, with British India. The amir's aim for the visit was to secure permission for an Afghan legation (embassy) in London while the British, unaware of this goal, hoped to overawe the amir with displays of military and industrial might as well as performances to show the strength and unity of British civil society. The amir, citing illness, ultimately declined the invitation but, in a calculated snub, sent his second son, Prince Nasr Allah Khan, in his place. This book narrates the events of the prince's mission in a number of revealing ways. Using both British and Afghan sources, including the journal of a senior member of the Afghan contingent, McChesney places the visit in its international and historical context and analyzes the internal dynamics of the prince's delegation, the seventy members of whom represented Afghanistan but included two Englishmen and two Englishwomen. A further twenty members, representing the Government of (British) India, were as multi-ethnic and multilingual as the members of the Afghan delegation. This bilateral and complex mission left India in April 1895 and remained together for the next six months. From the beginning it was riven by incidents of misogyny, racism, and class conflict that affected its ability to perform its diplomatic functions. The reader gains insights into the goals and tactics of two asymmetrical yet competing powers as well as a rare look at the human element in this cross-cultural diplomatic encounter.
