Book A First View of English and American Literature Classic Reprint

Download or read book A First View of English and American Literature Classic Reprint written by William Vaughn Moody and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-11 with total page 502 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A First View of English and American Literature This volume is based upon the authors' more advanced H istory of English Literature. The aim has been to pre serve those features of the previous book Which have most commended themselves to high-school and academy teach ers, to remove everything Which they have found too de tailed or too difiicult for their students, and to add Whatever was suggested by their friendly criticism as likely to in crease the value of the book in class-room practice. The literary comment has been simplified, partly by omission, partly by the substitution of explicit statement in the place of What was before only suggested. The number of authors treated has been much reduced, and the attention of the student centred exclusively on a few great representative figures. More space has been given to biography and de scriptive sketches, especially in the later periods. Each main epoch has been prefaced by a full historical introduction, and summarized in the form of a review-commentary and questions, together with tabular views. Suggestions con cerning the best available texts, and the best biographical and critical aids to study, are given at the close of each chapter. A number of portraits are added, taken in each case from an authentic source. For purposes of fuller refer ence, some authors not treated in the text are included in the tabular views. This book was released on 2017-12-04 with total page 440 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Introduction to American Literature The plan and purpose of this book can be stated in a few words. It is intended as a companion-book to my Introduction to English Literature, and it has been prepared - so far as the nature of the subject permitted - according to the same general scheme. The first thing required of a book of this character is that it shall really bring the reader into vital rela tion with the best works in the literature of which it treats, - that it shall induce him to read or re-read them with both delight and understanding. I have tried to do this by treating our greater authors at comparative length; by making their personality as real and living as I could; by adding some critical discussion of. Their chief works; and by furnishing study lists containing suggestions for reading and bibliographical references. It is hoped that these questions will aid materially in analyzing the thought, and that they will prove a decided help both in learning and in teaching the lessons. A great number of writers, but only to such as gave tone and char acter to the literature of their time. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Subordinate to these authors are those less famous with whom all but the most superficial students should be acquainted, and who would necessarily be excluded in a briefer consideration of our literature. III. Authors' belonging to the literature of knowl edge, rather than to the literature of power, writers whose services must always be remembered in any complete history of literature, these, together with their works, are mentioned in the introductory paragraphs of each chapter. IV. English authors have been chronologically divided into six groups for the purpose of giving the student a clearer idea of what writers were contemporaneous, and, at the same time, effectively to present the movement dur ing each epoch. It is believed that the classification is a natural one, and that while doing no violence to similar and well-settled plans, it more exactly discriminates the periods of actual change in the literary spirit. Download or read book An Introduction to the Study of American Literature Classic Reprint written by Brander Matthews and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-22 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Introduction to the Study of American Literature This book is intended as an introduction to the study Of American literature. Although the chapters on the separate authors are wholly distinct, they have been so planned that each Of them prepares the way for its suc cessor, and that all Of them together outline the changing circumstances under which American literature has devel Oped. An attempt has been made to show how each Of the chief American authors influenced his time, and how he in turn was influenced by it; and also to indicate how each Of them was related to the others, both personally and artistically. Bearing in mind the fact that the student needs to have his attention centered on vital points, all dates and all proper names, and all titles Of books not absolutely essen tial, have been rigorously omitted. Interest has thus been concentrated on the literary career Of each Of the greater writers and on their practice Of the literary art, in the hope and expectation that the student will be encouraged and stimulated to read their works for his own pleasure. After the consideration Of these more important authors, one by one, the writers of less consequence have been discussed briefly in a single chapter; and in like manner a single chapter has been devoted to a summary considera tion Of the condition Of our literature at the end Of the nine teenth century. N 0 living author is named in the text. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book A History of American Literature

Download or read book A History of American Literature written by Fred Lewis Pattee and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-10 with total page 498 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of American Literature: With a View to the Fundamental Principles Underlying Its Development; A d104-Book for Schools and Colleges In the preparation of this history of the rise and development of American literature the author has had clearly in mind the limitations to which every textbook on literature must be subject. Such a work can be at best only directive. It can trace the influences of race, environment, and epoch, and indicate causes and results; it can insist that the student follow the logical order, rejecting everything not worthy of his attention and emphasizing sufficiently the emphatic points; it can furnish him with a plan for estimating the personality and influence of each individual author; but more it cannot do. No one ever learned literature from a text-book, not even when it was supplemented by copious extracts from the authors considered. Fragments of an author's writings, like fragments of any work of art, give only vague ideas of the whole. He who has studied merely "Thanatopsis" or "Evangeline" knows very little of Bryant or Longfellow. A knowledge of "Rip Van Winkle" provides the key to only a very small part of Irving's domain. Rice and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2019-02-09 with total page 424 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Introduction to American Literature, or the Origin and Development of the English Language, With Gems of Poetry The statement has been made thus explicit, inasmuch as it is believed the design of this work is original; and it would be a poor reward for the labor that has been expended upon this small volume, should it be considered in any other light than as an original production, whatever its style of execution may be. And it may not be altogether impertinent to state, that the maxim - it is unwise to publish, because it reveals the extent of one's knowledge, - does not rigidly refer to this, as but a small part of the matter is published which was prepared in the investigation of the subject, and it had been easier to have made a folio out of it than this small volume. The work was commenced at an early day, and continued till it became a passion; therefore distrusting its merit, it has been submit ted to the examination of men, whose names it would be need less to mention, who have commended it and advised its pub lication. A part of the manuscript, that particularly which treats of the origin and philosophy of the language, has been submitted to the examination of Mr. J. H. Perkins who has pointed out whatever he thought worthy of alteration in its matter and style. It would be the dictate of a wise discretion to await the de cision of the public before making any disclosures with regard to any circumstances connected with the work, and the time that has been employed in its composition; but no desire is felt to escape the responsibility of the undertaking, and it is dcliv ered into the hands of an impartial community with the fullest confidence that it will be regarded with all the liberality that it deserves. Download or read book A Manual of American Literature written by John S. Hart and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-12 with total page 654 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Manual of American Literature: A Text-Book for Schools and Colleges HE systematic study of English Literature, as part of the course of ordinary English education, has been introduced almost entirely within' the last thirty years. The reader who will take the trouble to look over the old catalogues of our Colleges and Schools, will find no vestige of such a study prior to 1844. The Class Book of Poetry and the Class Book of Prose, issued in 1844, by the author of the present volume, were a feeble beginning in this line. Though intended primarily for reading-books, they were to some extent studies in literature. The selections from the various authors were in each case prefixed by a brief critical and biographical notice of the author, and were arranged in chronological order, so as to fumish the teacher and the scholar with something like an outline of the general eentse of English Literature.
