This book was released on 2017-11-20 with total page 366 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A First Latin Book for Junior High Schools The development of the Junior High School has brought about a need for certain changes in the organization and methods of presentation of the subject matter of the high school course. Simpler forms of statement, more extended drill, and the elimination or postponement of some topics which have 'been included in the elementary work of the four year high school are necessary in order to meet the needs of younger pupils. Such changes are especially impor tant in the study of foreign languages because of the fact that less time has been given for training in English and for gaining familiarity with the general principles of grammatical usage. In the case of a great many pupils Latin is the first for eign language to be studied. It should, therefore, be made as fully as possible an introduction to the general laws of language. Furthermore it should be presented in such a way as to reenforce the pupil's knowledge of the essential facts regarding the structure and grammatical usages of his own language. Often the inflections of the Latin sentence ele ments serve to make clear syntactical relations which have been vague to the pupil in his study of English and which must be understood by him before an intelligent use of his own language or of a foreign language is possible. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from First Latin Readings The present volume is put forth as an attempt at the partial solution of the vexed question of early reading material in Latin. The call for variety in the Latin authors read in American Preparatory Schools has recently been accentuated by the Report of the Committee on Secondary School Studies, presented to the National Educational Association in 1893. The objections to the exclusive use of Caesar's Commentaries as an introduction to the Latin language are set forth at length in that Report, and are so well known that a repetition of them here is not necessary. Book Applied Latin

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Applied Latin: A Course for Beginners After an experience of several years teaching in College and High School, the author has become convinced that the present First Year books do not satisfy modern needs in the teaching of Latin nor do they handle the subject in a manner that produces the greatest good for the greatest number of students. I. The Beginners' books in present use have been written too much for the small number of students who intend to go to College, and too little for the great number who study Latin only during two or three years of High School work. Within the last few years the makers of High _school curricula have been forced to pay more attention to the demands of the great mass of students who go no further than the High School. Courses more nearly related to their needs in later life as citizens and workers have been adopted. Traditional courses which gained reputations as valuable only for College students have been disregarded by the authorities and neglected by the students. Latin, especially, has been attacked as an educational luxury, be cause laymen have thought that the net results of the study do not justify the outlay of so much valuable time. Too often no definite advance could be pointed out as the result of the first year's study even by the teachers. Book excerpt: Excerpt from First Year Latin What grasp of the Latin language may be reasonably expected of an intelligent and industrious pupil of fourteen who has had five recitations a week for a school year of thirty-eight weeks?
