Book Quality upgrading in dairy value chains Mixed methods evidence from southwestern Uganda

Download or read book Quality upgrading in dairy value chains Mixed methods evidence from southwestern Uganda written by Ariong, Richard M. and published by Intl Food Policy Res Inst. This book was released on 2024-07-31 with total page 27 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Quality upgrading may be lagging in value chains where the assessment and traceability of the quality of the underlying commodity is challenging. In Uganda's southwestern milk shed, a variety of initiatives are trying to increase the quality of raw milk in dairy value chains. These initiatives generally involve the introduction of technologies that enable measurement of key quality parameters at strategic nodes in the value chain, in conjunction with a system that allows for tracking of these parameters throughout the supply chain. In this paper, we use a combination of focus group discussions, key informant interviews, and quantitative data that is generated by these initiatives to document outputs, describe emerging outcomes, and reflect on the potential impact. We find clear evidence that milk quality improved, but the effects on milk prices are more subtle.

Book Milk Quality

Download or read book Milk Quality written by F. Harding and published by Springer. This book was released on 2013-12-14 with total page 178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Milk has played a major contribution to the human diet in many different countries across the world since the dawn of time. The dairy cow was domesticated over 6000 years ago, she was the object of worship in the Middle East 2000 years before Christ, and milk and milk products are mentioned more than 50 times in the Bible. Milk and dairy products have become a major part of the human diet in many countries. It is not surprising therefore, that over many years considerable attention has been paid to improving the quality of milk. We have worked to improve the yield, the compositional quality and the hygienic quality, and have striven to minimise the level of contaminants which can find access to this, perhaps our most natural, unrefined and highly nutritious foodstuff. The chain of people involved in the milk industry extends from milk production-farmers, veterinarians and farm advisors-through transport to processing-quality controllers, manufacturers-and on to retailers, legislators, nutritionists, dairy educators and consumers. All will be interested in the quality parameters of milk which are reg ularly measured for commercial reasons, for trade, for legal requirements and for reasons of nutrition.

Book Measuring Impacts and Enabling Investments in Energy Smart Agrifood Chains

This book was released on 2019-07-12 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This publication i) illustrates how costs and benefits of energy interventions including their impacts along the agrifood value chain can be measured at country level, ii) applies the analysis to 11 country case studies, iii) identifies barriers, possible solutions, business models and success factors for the adoption of energy technologies, and iv) draws general recommendations for investors and decision makers. This report summarizes the analysis and main findings stemming from the FAO project “Investing in Energy Sustainable Technologies for the Agrifood Sector” (INVESTA). FAO has been working together with GIZ and partners of the international initiative Powering Agriculture: An Energy Grand Challenge for Development (PAEGC) since 2014. PAEGC, also partnered by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), supports the development and deployment of clean energy innovations that increase agriculture productivity and stimulate low carbon economic growth in the agriculture sector of developing countries to help end extreme poverty and extreme hunger.

Book Mastitis in dairy production

Download or read book Mastitis in dairy production written by H. Hogeveen and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2023-08-28 with total page 744 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Worldwide, mastitis is still one of the most important diseases in the dairy sector. Being a multifactorial disease, caused by multiple pathogens, control remains a difficult issue. Mastitis not only affects the health of milk-producing animals, having consequences for the profitability of dairy farms, it also affects the animal welfare. Moreover, mastitis negatively influences the milk quality having consequences for the dairy processing industry. In other words: mastitis affects a large part of the dairy production chain. Due to ongoing scientific effort, insight in mastitis in the context of increasingly complex farming systems, is improving. This insight leads to better methods to control mastitis, either by prevention or by adequate measures (e.g. therapy) when a cow (or goat or sheep) gets mastitis. This book reflects the current knowledge from all over the world on mastitis as it was presented during the 4th IDF International Mastitis Conference, held in June 2005 in Maastricht, the Netherlands. The papers of the 115 oral presentations and the 13 keynote presentations are reflecting not only the current knowledge of mastitis control but are also giving ideas for future solutions for control measures.

Book A Textbook Of Dairy Chemistry

Download or read book A Textbook Of Dairy Chemistry written by Dr. Jaidev Kumar and published by Academic Guru Publishing House. This book was released on 2024-02-02 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Globally, the dairy business is among the fastest-growing markets. The amount of wastewater produced by dairies has grown in tandem with the production of dairy products. The dairy sector produces strong wastewaters with high concentrations of Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD) and Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD) as a result of processing raw milk into various products. The importance of dairy products for constructing strong bones and keeping a healthy weight is shown in the book. In addition to being good for your teeth & gums, dairy products may help lower your risk of gum disease. Protein, vitamin D, magnesium, vitamin A, and calcium are all abundant in dairy products. The calcium in dairy products is essential for strong bones, healthy blood clotting, proper neuron function, and muscular development. Not only does India’s dairy industry play a crucial role in the country’s economy, but it also provides jobs for millions of people living in rural areas. Farmers’ access to supplemental income from the dairy business is a key factor in the alleviation of poverty and the improvement of living conditions. Rural areas’ access to utilities like roads and power is bolstered by the dairy business as well.
