Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Field and Laboratory Guide in Biological Nature-Study This field and laboratory guide in biological nature-study is the outcome of many years experience in preparing teachers to handle nature-study in the grades and biology in the secondary schools. It is intended primarily for the use of students who are preparing to teach this work and of teach ers who are already at it. It does not attempt systematically to cover the field of biology but merely to deal with those groups of plants and animals that are of most interest to pupils. Book Nature Study With Common Things

Download or read book Nature Study With Common Things written by M. H. Carter and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-22 with total page 156 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Nature Study With Common Things: An Elementary Laboratory Manual It is the intention of this book to provide a laboratory guide for young pupils; a guide which shall introduce them to, and give them practice in, method of procedure in laboratory investigation. Since the foundation of all science lies in observation, the work here given is planned with a view to training and developing the power of accurate observation, of critical examination, rather than the reasoning processes which depend for their results upon the accuracy of the data obtained first through observation. The child must be taught to see before he is taught to explain; he must learn to answer the question what is it? if he is ever satisfactorily to answer why is it? He must get his mental image clear and complete by using all of his senses upon the object before he can understand it, or draw conclusions from what he learns. For this reason many of the observations the pupil is called upon to make in these lessons bear upon no conclusion. They make no attempt to explain anything, but are for the sole purpose of being made. For this reason also many observations lead nowhere logically, many problems suggested remain unsolved, many whys unanswered. For the child this should be so. His work in science should leave him with a sense of accomplishment, but not of finality. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from General Biology: A Book of Outlines and Practical Studies for the General Student This book offers a series of practical studies Of biological phenomena for the guidance of the general student. It is not a formal text, and not at all a treatise, but only a guide intended to assist the student in acquiring for himself some real knowledge Of living nature. It differs chiefly from other books intended for the use of college classes in the wider range of studies it offers, some important phases of biology having hitherto been dismissed with mere didactic instruction. Morphology has dominated - Often monopo lized - college work in biology in the past; doubtless, be cause it was first reduced to pedagogic form, and made available for laboratory instruction. A more equable treatment is here attempted, in the hope of leading the student to a practical acquaintance with elementary phenomena in the whole broad field. Book Applied Biology an Elementary Textbook and Laboratory Guide Classic Reprint

Download or read book Applied Biology an Elementary Textbook and Laboratory Guide Classic Reprint written by Maurice A. Bigelow and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-13 with total page 596 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Applied Biology an Elementary Textbook and Laboratory Guide A noticeable feature of the book is omission or at least lack of emphasis upon several hundred technical terms commonly used in elementary books of botany and zoology. Italics have been used for emphasizing the most important scientific terms when introduced and defined, while technical words in the plain type should be understood by students as important for special study, for temporary use in the text, or for com parison with other books. The authors realize that in select ing the biological terms for emphasis they may have omitted some really useful terms, and it may be that certain italicized words which have a narrow range of application do not deserve the emphasis given them. A further discussion of this ques tion of technical words will be included in the Teachers' About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Field Notes on Science and Nature

Download or read book Field Notes on Science and Nature written by Michael R. Canfield and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 2012-07-09 with total page 315 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Once in a great while, as the New York Times noted recently, a naturalist writes a book that changes the way people look at the living world. John James Audubon’s Birds of America, published in 1838, was one. Roger Tory Peterson’s 1934 Field Guide to the Birds was another. How does such insight into nature develop? Pioneering a new niche in the study of plants and animals in their native habitat, Field Notes on Science and Nature allows readers to peer over the shoulders and into the notebooks of a dozen eminent field workers, to study firsthand their observational methods, materials, and fleeting impressions. What did George Schaller note when studying the lions of the Serengeti? What lists did Kenn Kaufman keep during his 1973 “big year”? How does Piotr Naskrecki use relational databases and electronic field notes? In what way is Bernd Heinrich’s approach “truly Thoreauvian,” in E. O. Wilson’s view? Recording observations in the field is an indispensable scientific skill, but researchers are not generally willing to share their personal records with others. Here, for the first time, are reproductions of actual pages from notebooks. And in essays abounding with fascinating anecdotes, the authors reflect on the contexts in which the notes were taken. Covering disciplines as diverse as ornithology, entomology, ecology, paleontology, anthropology, botany, and animal behavior, Field Notes offers specific examples that professional naturalists can emulate to fine-tune their own field methods, along with practical advice that amateur naturalists and students can use to document their adventures.
