Book Quadratic Residues and Non Residues

Download or read book Quadratic Residues and Non Residues written by Steve Wright and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-11-11 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers an account of the classical theory of quadratic residues and non-residues with the goal of using that theory as a lens through which to view the development of some of the fundamental methods employed in modern elementary, algebraic, and analytic number theory. The first three chapters present some basic facts and the history of quadratic residues and non-residues and discuss various proofs of the Law of Quadratic Reciprosity in depth, with an emphasis on the six proofs that Gauss published. The remaining seven chapters explore some interesting applications of the Law of Quadratic Reciprocity, prove some results concerning the distribution and arithmetic structure of quadratic residues and non-residues, provide a detailed proof of Dirichlet’s Class-Number Formula, and discuss the question of whether quadratic residues are randomly distributed. The text is a valuable resource for graduate and advanced undergraduate students as well as for mathematicians interested in number theory.

Book excerpt: Now in its second edition, this textbook provides an introduction and overview of number theory based on the density and properties of the prime numbers. This unique approach offers both a firm background in the standard material of number theory, as well as an overview of the entire discipline. All of the essential topics are covered, such as the fundamental theorem of arithmetic, theory of congruences, quadratic reciprocity, arithmetic functions, and the distribution of primes. New in this edition are coverage of p-adic numbers, Hensel's lemma, multiple zeta-values, and elliptic curve methods in primality testing. Key topics and features include: A solid introduction to analytic number theory, including full proofs of Dirichlet's Theorem and the Prime Number Theorem Concise treatment of algebraic number theory, including a complete presentation of primes, prime factorizations in algebraic number fields, and unique factorization of ideals Discussion of the AKS algorithm, which shows that primality testing is one of polynomial time, a topic not usually included in such texts Many interesting ancillary topics, such as primality testing and cryptography, Fermat and Mersenne numbers, and Carmichael numbers The user-friendly style, historical context, and wide range of exercises that range from simple to quite difficult (with solutions and hints provided for select exercises) make Number Theory: An Introduction via the Density of Primes ideal for both self-study and classroom use. Intended for upper level undergraduates and beginning graduates, the only prerequisites are a basic knowledge of calculus, multivariable calculus, and some linear algebra. All necessary concepts from abstract algebra and complex analysis are introduced where needed.

Book A Classical Introduction to Modern Number Theory

Download or read book A Classical Introduction to Modern Number Theory written by K. Ireland and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-09 with total page 355 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a revised and greatly expanded version of our book Elements of Number Theory published in 1972. As with the first book the primary audience we envisage consists of upper level undergraduate mathematics majors and graduate students. We have assumed some familiarity with the material in a standard undergraduate course in abstract algebra. A large portion of Chapters 1-11 can be read even without such background with the aid of a small amount of supplementary reading. The later chapters assume some knowledge of Galois theory, and in Chapters 16 and 18 an acquaintance with the theory of complex variables is necessary. Number theory is an ancient subject and its content is vast. Any intro ductory book must, of necessity, make a very limited selection from the fascinat ing array of possible topics. Our focus is on topics which point in the direction of algebraic number theory and arithmetic algebraic geometry. By a careful selection of subject matter we have found it possible to exposit some rather advanced material without requiring very much in the way oftechnical background. Most of this material is classical in the sense that is was dis covered during the nineteenth century and earlier, but it is also modern because it is intimately related to important research going on at the present time.

Book Notes and Problems in Number Theory Volume II

Download or read book Notes and Problems in Number Theory Volume II written by Taha Sochi and published by Taha Sochi. This book was released on 2024-05-23 with total page 178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the second volume of my book " Notes and Problems in Number Theory". We focus in this volume on the type of problems that develop the basic and most essential skills which are required for dealing with number theory problems. We introduced some new topics in the first chapter (i.e. Introduction), while the remaining chapters are largely dedicated to solved problems from the main topics of elementary number theory (which are introduced in V1 or in the Introduction chapter of the present volume). We also introduced the subject of cryptography and computing in number theory in the last two chapters. So in brief, the materials in this volume are largely a mix of applications to the materials of V1 and some theoretical background of new topics as well as applications to the new topics. As in my previous books, my topmost priority in the structure and presentation is clarity and graduality so that the readers have the best chance of understanding the content with minimum effort and with maximum enjoyment. The book can be used as a text or as a reference for an introductory course on number theory and may also be used for general reading in mathematics (especially by those who have the hobby of problem solving). The book may also be adopted as a source of pedagogical materials which can supplement, for instance, tutorial sessions (e.g. in undergraduate courses on mathematics or computing or cryptography or related subjects).

Based on the author's historically motivated method of teaching, special attention is given to demonstrate that Euler?s work had served as the basis of research and developments of mathematical and physical sciences for the last 300 years. An attempt is also made to examine his research and its relation to current mathematics and science. Based on a series of Euler?s extraordinary contributions, the historical development of many different subjects of mathematical sciences is traced with a linking commentary so that it puts the reader at the forefront of current research.

Book Introduction to Abstract Algebra

Download or read book Introduction to Abstract Algebra written by Benjamin Fine and published by JHU Press. This book was released on 2014-07-01 with total page 583 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A new approach to abstract algebra that eases student anxieties by building on fundamentals. Introduction to Abstract Algebra presents a breakthrough approach to teaching one of math's most intimidating concepts. Avoiding the pitfalls common in the standard textbooks, Benjamin Fine, Anthony M. Gaglione, and Gerhard Rosenberger set a pace that allows beginner-level students to follow the progression from familiar topics such as rings, numbers, and groups to more difficult concepts. Classroom tested and revised until students achieved consistent, positive results, this textbook is designed to keep students focused as they learn complex topics. Fine, Gaglione, and Rosenberger's clear explanations prevent students from getting lost as they move deeper and deeper into areas such as abelian groups, fields, and Galois theory. This textbook will help bring about the day when abstract algebra no longer creates intense anxiety but instead challenges students to fully grasp the meaning and power of the approach. Topics covered include: • Rings • Integral domains • The fundamental theorem of arithmetic • Fields • Groups • Lagrange's theorem • Isomorphism theorems for groups • Fundamental theorem of finite abelian groups • The simplicity of An for n5 • Sylow theorems • The Jordan-Hölder theorem • Ring isomorphism theorems • Euclidean domains • Principal ideal domains • The fundamental theorem of algebra • Vector spaces • Algebras • Field extensions: algebraic and transcendental • The fundamental theorem of Galois theory • The insolvability of the quintic
