Book The Worst Book Ever

Download or read book The Worst Book Ever written by Elise Gravel and published by Drawn & Quarterly. This book was released on 2021-04-29 with total page 52 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Don’t take the title as a metaphor: it really is the worst book ever. Governor General Literary Award winning children’s book author and illustrator Elise Gravel takes readers on an unexpected journey through the world’s most boring book. The story’s characters and omniscient readers alike quickly become annoyed by the author’s bland imagination and rebel against her tired tropes and stale character choices, spouting sass in an attempt to get her attention and steer the narrative in a more interesting direction. After all, you don’t even have to buy the book, but the characters? They’re stuck in there for an eternity, and they’re going to do their best to make the most of it, or at least have a little fun where they can. As the charming and bizarre true nature of the characters overpowers the dry attributes given to them by the author, this once blasé story quickly picks up speed, transforming the story into something much more unique than originally promised. With Gravel’s signature goofy characters behind the wheel, no silly twist or rude body function is off the table!

Book excerpt: Nearly a century ago, in the Forbidden City, China’s last emperor reigned from his dragon throne. Although he was only a boy, the imperial decrees issued in his name echoed in every corner of the country. Every man had to shave his head and wear a single pigtail to symbolize his submission to the emperor, and every woman was second in importance to the men in her family. Women were obedient to their fathers and brothers and later to the husbands in their arranged marriages. Certainly no woman was encouraged to attend school or to show any independence. Into this world, in a village in the lower reaches of the Yangtze River, White Lily was born. She had a happy childhood, running and playing, until, at the age of four, she was forced to undergo the painful procedure of foot binding required for all females of her social class. But White Lily has her heart set on more than a traditional role in society, and she enlists the support of her beloved elder brother. Together they devise a plan to defy tradition and convince their father that White Lily’s feet and mind must be allowed to grow.

Download or read book THE SECRET GARDEN written by LEONI ROBENS and published by LEONI ROBENS. This book was released on 2024-06-23 with total page 544 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ABOUT THE BOOK It is only when we overcome our disabilities that wreck our minds sanity Feelings of envy, jealousy and hatred and win them over with laurels of love and hope, our daily accomplishments over disappointments will we be able to encounter God in our daily steps as we walk towards that holy land to become his many pilgrims of peace, love, harmony and joyfulness. Turning INTO the ‘LIGHT OF THE WORLD!’ Another interesting derivative of ‘OR’ is the Hebrew root ‘ro-eh’, made with the letters ‘Reysh’ ‘Alef’ ‘Hey’. It includes the same letters as in ‘OR’ like an ORACLE of truth and upholding secrets of a secret garden nonetheless EDEN or PARADISE! The biblical prophet, the seer, is called in Hebrew ‘ro-eh’, which also comes from ‘OR’, ‘LIGHT’ and like the wind soughing through the trees in a mystical secret place where wilderness thrives and yet is a secret to all mankind. In the second chapter of the Book of Genesis, there appears for the first time a reference about the ‘Garden of Eden’ “And the LORD God planted a garden in Eden, in the east, and there he put the man whom he had formed. And out of the ground the LORD God made to spring up every tree that is pleasant to the sight and good for food. The tree of LIFE was in the midst of the garden, like the Dwarf apple tree in the middle of my book secret garden and all its beautiful characters, Mary, Dickon, Colin, the gardener Ben Weatherstaff and the magical creatures, many more poems and role roles to play their parts within my story book, with the magical robin bird beholding the secret key. The Tree was the knowledge of good and evil. A river flowed out of Eden to water the garden, and there it divided and became four rivers! (GENESIS 2:8-11) The name of the first is Pison: that is it which compasseth the whole land of Havilah, where there is gold! This is why it is no surprise to discover the Hebrew term for ‘Heaven’ or ‘Paradise’ is in fact ‘Gan Eden’ {גן עדן} – meaning the Garden of Eden…The Secret Garden! By Frances Hodgson Burnett penned by Leoni Robens in her own imaginative, soul nourishing, masterful and creative style!

Book Scent of Words A Beautiful Collection of Poetry

Download or read book Scent of Words A Beautiful Collection of Poetry written by StoryMirror Authors and published by StoryMirror Infotech Pvt Ltd. This book was released on 2023-06-14 with total page 178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: About the Book: ‘Poetry is when an emotion has found its thought and the thought has found words’ ~ Robert Frost. It is not without a reason that humans call the best of everything ‘poetry’. In the famous romance novel, The Notebook by Nicholas Sparks, the hero calls his lover a ‘living poem’. Likewise, our best literature (irrespective of its form), movies, arts, places, food, and even wine is called ‘poetic’. No matter how scientifically advanced or technologically sophisticated we get, humans will always read and write poetry to express their emotions and feelings. We don’t read and write poetry because it’s fancy. We read and write poetry because we are members of the human race filled with passion. Medicine, law, business, and engineering are noble pursuits necessary to sustain life. Poetry, beauty, romance and love make this life worth living. With immense pride and joy that the entire team at StoryMirror selected, edited, compiled, designed, printed and published this beautiful collection of poems, “Scent of Words”. The poets who co-authored this anthology come from different walks of life. Their age, gender, profession, qualification, theme and genre might differ, but all of them have brought their emotions, imagination, passion and life experiences to these poems. These poems are sure to strike a chord, touch your heart and soothe your soul. Hope you have a great reading experience!

Book excerpt: A CBC BOOKS BEST NONFICTION OF 2020 AN ENTROPY MAGAZINE BEST NONFICTION 2020/21 A NEW YORK PUBLIC LIBRARY BOOK OF THE DAY (07/23/2022) Fairy tales shape how we see the world, so what happens when you identify more with the Beast than Beauty? If every disabled character is mocked and mistreated, how does the Beast ever imagine a happily-ever-after? Amanda Leduc looks at fairy tales from the Brothers Grimm to Disney, showing us how they influence our expectations and behaviour and linking the quest for disability rights to new kinds of stories that celebrate difference. "Historically we have associated the disabled body image and disabled life with an unhappy ending” – Sue Carter, Toronto Star "Leduc persuasively illustrates the power of stories to affect reality in this painstakingly researched and provocative study that invites us to consider our favorite folktales from another angle." – Sara Shreve, Library Journal "She [Leduc] argues that template is how society continues to treat the disabled: rather than making the world accessible for everyone, the disabled are often asked to adapt to inaccessible environments." – Ryan Porter, Quill & Quire "Read this smart, tenacious book." – The Washington Post "A brilliant young critic named Amanda Leduc explores this pernicious power of language in her new book, Disfigured … Leduc follows the bread crumbs back into her original experience with fairy tales – and then explores their residual effects … Read this smart, tenacious book." – The Washington Post "Leduc investigates the intersection between disability and her beloved fairy tales, questioning the constructs of these stories and where her place is, as a disabled woman, among those narratives." – The Globe and Mail "It gave me goosebumps as I read, to see so many of my unexpressed, half-formed thoughts in print. My highlighter got a good workout." – BookRiot "Disfigured is not just an eye-opener when it comes to the Disney princess crew and the Marvel universe – this thin volume provides the tools to change how readers engage with other kinds of popular media, from horror films to fashion magazines to outdated sitcom jokes." – Quill & Quire “It’s an essential read for anyone who loves fairy tales.” – Buzzfeed Books "Leduc makes one thing clear and beautifully so – fairy tales are fundamentally fantastic, but that doesn’t mean that they are beyond reproach in their depiction of real issues and identities." – Shrapnel Magazine "As Leduc takes us through these fairy tales and the space they occupy in the narratives that we construct, she slowly unfolds a call-to-action: the claiming of space for disability in storytelling." – The Globe and Mail "A provocative beginning to a thoughtful and wide-ranging book, one which explores some of the most primal stories readers have encountered and prompts them to ponder the subtext situated there all along." – LitHub "a poignant and informative account of how the stories we tell shape our collective understanding of one another.” – BookMarks "What happens when we allow disabled writers to tell stories of disability within fairytales and in magical and supernatural settings? It is a reimagining of the fairytale canon we need. Leduc dares to dream of a world that most stories envision is unattainable." – Bitch Media
