Book excerpt: A "massive work of dizzying originality" (Boston Globe), XX is an inventive and boldly designed science-fiction epic by acclaimed graphic designer Rian Hughes—now in paperback The battle for your mind has already begun. At Jodrell Bank Observatory in England, a radio telescope has detected a mysterious signal of extraterrestrial origin—a message that may be the first communication from an interstellar civilization. Has Humanity made first contact? Is the signal itself a form of alien life? Could it be a threat? If so, how will the people of Earth respond? Jack Fenwick, artificial intelligence expert, believes that he and his associates at tech start-up Intelligencia can interpret the message and find a way to step into the realm the signal encodes. What they find is a complex alien network beyond anything mankind has imagined. Drawing on Dada, punk, and the modernist movements of the 20th century, XX is assembled from redacted NASA reports, artwork, magazine articles, secret transcripts, and a novel within a novel. Deconstructing layout and language in order to explore how ideas propagate, acclaimed designer and artist Rian Hughes's debut novel presents a compelling vision of humanity's unique place in the universe, and a realistic depiction of what might happen in the wake of the biggest scientific discovery in human history. Propulsive and boldly designed, XX is a gripping, wildly imaginative, utterly original work.

Book Game Theory for Applied Economists

Download or read book Game Theory for Applied Economists written by Robert Gibbons and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 1992-07-13 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An introduction to one of the most powerful tools in modern economics Game Theory for Applied Economists introduces one of the most powerful tools of modern economics to a wide audience: those who will later construct or consume game-theoretic models. Robert Gibbons addresses scholars in applied fields within economics who want a serious and thorough discussion of game theory but who may have found other works too abstract. Gibbons emphasizes the economic applications of the theory at least as much as the pure theory itself; formal arguments about abstract games play a minor role. The applications illustrate the process of model building—of translating an informal description of a multi-person decision situation into a formal game-theoretic problem to be analyzed. Also, the variety of applications shows that similar issues arise in different areas of economics, and that the same game-theoretic tools can be applied in each setting. In order to emphasize the broad potential scope of the theory, conventional applications from industrial organization have been largely replaced by applications from labor, macro, and other applied fields in economics. The book covers four classes of games, and four corresponding notions of equilibrium: static games of complete information and Nash equilibrium, dynamic games of complete information and subgame-perfect Nash equilibrium, static games of incomplete information and Bayesian Nash equilibrium, and dynamic games of incomplete information and perfect Bayesian equilibrium.

Book excerpt: A formidable debut of nine surreally funny, politically astute and emotionally gripping stories. In the surreal world of Buffy Cram's stories, someone or something has slipped beneath the skins of her already beleaguered characters, rearranging the familiar into something strange and even sinister, making off with their emotional and even physical goods. A smug suburbanite becomes obsessed with the "hybrids," the wandering mob of intellectual vagrants overrunning his complacent little cul de sac, snacking on p,te and reciting poetry; a father and daughter's post-apocalyptic Pacific island civilization, built of floating garbage and sustained entirely by rubber, is beginning to fray, literally, revealing something disastrously like moss beneath its smooth synthetic skin; following an appendectomy, a young woman's belly starts transmitting what sound like Russian radio signals; a young publishing assistant, demoted at work and dumped by her boyfriend, finds herself unable to control her strange new appetites. Inhabited, occupied, possessed -- suddenly, the world as they knew it is no longer quite recognizable, not to mention safe -- if it actually was safe before. But it's the surprising, often revelatory ways in which Cram's characters navigate through these strange new landscapes that imbue these stories with complexity, grace and lustre. For a preview of the stories in Radio Belly search for Large Garbage: A Radio Belly Single -- downloadable for free from all ebook retailers.

Book excerpt: Greed and desperation drive Aaron Abbott to challenge his sister's competency. Believers line up against nonbelievers in the circuit court of Chicago to decide, for once and for all, if there is a God. Aaron needed his sister Trisha’s inheritance. As a blue blood, he knew well the damage created when important resources were not held by the cream of society. Trisha taught developmentally disabled kids. When her boyfriend, Hat, died in a car accident, she reverted into her hermit-like old self. Aaron met Hat once, and suspected he may have been one of Trisha's pupils. Who better to assist Aaron than Sebastian Sherwin, a famously unscrupulous, atheist attorney? And what the hell kind of name is Hat anyway? Judge Cohen was up for reelection. There was zero public appeal gained by declaring a young woman incompetent. Unfortunately for him, the story was picked up by a blog and gained national attention. Overnight, his courtroom turned into an unruly zoo with believers on one side and nonbelievers on the other. It got so he had to sneak into his own chambers and wear a disguise to eat lunch. How could he be reelected by strangers when his own wife and grandkids accused him of not adequately defending the young woman or his faith? During the court hearing, Joey Pitasi, "wise-guy" friend of Hat explains, “Trisha is cuckoo and loving brudder's trying to lock her up and take her cake.” When Aaron is questioned in court about his sister's competency in finance, he replies, "Sir, my sister wouldn't know Dow Jones from Tom Jones."
