Book excerpt: I developed a stochastic dynamic programming model of adult female Semipalmated Sandpiper (Calidris pusilla) spring migration for the purpose of adaptive management of wetlands along their migratory route. Semipalmated Sandpipers are small abundant shorebirds that migrate through Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge, FL, Yawkey Reserve, SC, Pea Island National Wildlife Refuge, NC, and Delaware Bay on their way from the Caribbean and South America to arctic North American breeding grounds. The first three stopover sites mentioned include managed wetlands. To manage these wetlands for Semipalmated Sandpiper and other migratory shorebirds' fitness by changing water levels to alter food availability, it is important to understand how the birds are using these stopover sites. A stochastic dynamic programming model is a model of organism behavior which assumes that the organism is attempting to optimize its fitness. In this model, the fitness of the birds depends on surviving migration as well as arriving on the breeding grounds close to an optimal date and with sufficient energy reserves. The birds can decide each day whether to stay at the current stopover site and feed, or to fly to the next site. Model parameters include flight constants, ground speed probabilities, energy gain, and predation rates. The values of several parameters were tuned so that average peaks of migration at the stopover sites and average percent fat of the birds on different days and stopover sites correlated well with data taken from published and unpublished studies. The model outcomes include average fitness, seasonal mortality rate, reproductive output, average length of stay at each stopover site, and percentage skimming (not staying to feed) at each stopover site. The peaks of migration matched the targets set. The birds stayed longest at the first and last stopover sites; many birds did not stop to feed at the middle two stopover sites. From the canary in the coalmine, to shifts in demographics and population patterns, birds tell us when things are not well. More often than not, these observable trends are a result of adaptive behavior that has evolved over many generations. Understanding foundation concepts of songbird behavior, including the rate at which behavioral changes occur and the limits of plasticity, is a requirement for anyone interested in sustaining healthy songbird populations in the Anthropocene. Yet, our world is changing rapidly. Can songbirds adapt quickly enough to keep up? Observed declines in many species worldwide suggest that the answer is no. To avoid extinction for many species, our conservation strategies must be broader and more intentional. For example, are there ways to actively manage habitats so that vital cue-response systems are kept intact? Anthropogenic factors are also altering how birds select mates and habitats, sometimes in ways that decrease fitness. Can biologists actively manipulate behavior to mitigate these mismatches? The first goal of this book is to educate academics and managers alike about the foundational behaviors that drive songbird activity and demographic patterns. Topics such as migration, habitat selection, communication, etc., are explored by renown songbird biologist to bring the reader up to speed on the latest advancements in the field. However, each author is also versed in the principles of conservation. Book excerpt: About 50 species of shorebirds breed in the Arctic, where they constitute the most characteristic component of the tundra avifauna. Here, we review the impact of weather and climate on the breeding cycle of shorebirds based on extensive studies conducted across the Arctic. Conditions for breeding shorebirds are highly variable among species, sites and regions, both within and between continents. Weather effects on breeding are most moderate in the Low Arctic of northern Europe and most extreme in the Siberian High Arctic. The decision of whether or not to breed upon arrival on the breeding grounds, the timing of egg-laying and the chick-growth period are most affected by annual variation in weather. In large parts of the Arctic, clutch initiation dates are highly correlated with snowmelt dates and in regions and years where extensive snowmelt occurs before or soon after the arrival of shorebirds, the decision to breed and on the breeding ecology of clutch initiation dates appear to be a function of food availability for laying females. Once incubation is initiated, adult shorebirds appear fairly resilient to variations in temperature with nest abandonment primarily occurring in case of severe weather with new snow covering the ground. Feeding conditions for chicks, a factor highly influenced by weather, affects juvenile production in most regions. Predation has a very strong impact on breeding productivity throughout the Arctic and subarctic, with lemming Dicrostonyx spp. and Lemmus spp. fluctuations strongly influencing predation rates, particularly in the Siberian Arctic. The fate of Arctic shorebirds under projected future climate scenarios is uncertain, but High Arctic species and populations appear particularly at risk. Climatic amelioration may benefit Arctic shorebirds in the short term by increasing both survival and productivity, whereas in the long term habitat changes both on the breeding grounds and on the temperate and tropical non-breeding areas may put them under considerable pressure and may bring some of them near to extinction. Their relatively low genetic diversity, which is thought to be a consequence of survival through past climatically-driven population bottlenecks, may also put them more at risk to anthropogenic-induced climate variation than other avian taxa.
