Book excerpt: This eBook edition of "Hopalong Cassidy & His Wild West Adventures – 7 Westerns in One Edition" has been formatted to the highest digital standards and adjusted for readability on all devices. Hopalong Cassidy is a cowboy hero created by the author Clarence Mulford, who wrote a series of popular short stories and many novels based on the character. In his early writings, Mulford portrayed the character as rude, dangerous, and rough-talking. He had a wooden leg which caused him to walk with a little "hop", hence the nickname. The character—as played by movie actor William Boyd in films adapted from Mulford's books—was transformed into a clean-cut, sarsaparilla-drinking hero. Sixty-six popular films appeared. The Coming of Cassidy and Others Hopalong Cassidy Bar-20 Days Buck Peters, Ranchman The Bar-20 Three Tex Clarence E. Mulford (1883–1956) created Hopalong Cassidy in 1904 while living in Fryeburg, Maine, and the many short stories and 28 novels were adapted to radio, feature film, television, and comic books, often deviating significantly from the original stories, especially in the character's traits. But more than just writing a very popular series of Westerns, Mulford recreated an entire detailed and authentic world filled with characters drawn from his extensive library research.

Download or read book A Place to Stand written by Ann Bridge and published by A&C Black. This book was released on 2011-10-28 with total page 309 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1953, A Place To Stand is set in Budapest in the spring of 1941, Hope - a spoilt but attractive society girl and daughter of a leading American business man - finds herself playing the lead in a dangerous and most unexpected affair of underground intrigue, through the machinations of her journalist fiancé. During the course of her activities she falls in love with a Polish refugee, and at the moment when Germany invades Hungary, she is already deeply involved - both emotionally and politically. Bridge, herself an eye witness of these events, tells in moving and graphic terms the terrible story of Germany's 'protective' invasion; although it is presented in the form of an imaginative episode, the historical significance and accuracy are all too tragically evident. This admirable novel is at once a charming love story in the shadow of fear and disruption, a subtle and intimate portrayal of human beings in a time of crisis, and a most exciting narrative, set against the enchanting background of Budapest.

Book excerpt: The population of the United States is projected to grow by almost 120 million people in the next 45 years. This growth, and change in population composition, will present local governments across the nation with unprecedented challenges. As cities and towns work to provide more services to their residents with fewer and fewer resources, managers and elected officials will be forced to face national issues such as transportation, food and fresh water supply, healthcare provision, and even global warming. Local governments will have to learn to rely less on their state and federal counterparts, and more on local resources. Services provided by local governments, more so than at any other level, are "people-driven," and the public will look to those officials closest to them for answers. In Earth is a Nice Little Planet: Who Will Save It? Christina Park and Orville Powell set out to look at some of the consequences of predicted population growth and identify connections to other large scale issues. What they discovered in researching these topics is that it is not really about the answers, but about the questions. The questions that every city and town in America should be asking themselves. How will we accommodate an increasing population? How will we provide for the financial and healthcare needs of the elderly and children? What can we do help combat climate change? The clock is ticking and we can not wait any longer to begin addressing these issues. It is time for local leaders to face these problems and begin the necessary discussions to look for ways to ensure a sustainable future for generations to come. Will you help save the planet?
