Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Dress in a Window is a collection of short stories about love, coincidences, and fate. What the readers are saying: What an enjoyable short story collection! Marie Astor has a real gift for storytelling. This collection has romance, everyday life vignettes and even a sprinkle of magic. An entertaining, fun read. While the subject of the stories varies from romance to everyday life to a bit of satire, I liked the fact that all stories share a hopeful ending, which is something that I found to be uplifting and enjoyable. A wonderful collection of short stories with real characters and substance. I just finished Lucky Charm, a contemporary romance by this author, and thought I'd give her short story collection a try. I loved the characters and the richly plotted stories. I absolutely loved this short story collection: my favorites are A Dress in a Window and A Chance Encounter. If you enjoy love stories, take a chance on A Chance Encounter and Other Stories! This is my second book by Marie Astor. I also read LUCKY CHARM and loved it as well.

Book excerpt: A perfect debut novel is like a perfect dress—it’s a “must have” and when you “try it on” it fits perfectly. In this richly patterned story of sisterhood, ambition, and reinvention Sofia Grant has created a story just right for fans of Vintage and The Dress Shop of Dreams. World War II has ended and American women are shedding their old clothes for the gorgeous new styles. Voluminous layers of taffeta and tulle, wasp waists, and beautiful color—all so welcome after years of sensible styles and strict rationing. Jeanne Brink and her sister Peggy both had to weather every tragedy the war had to offer—Peggy now a widowed mother, Jeanne without the fiancé she’d counted on, both living with Peggy’s mother-in-law in a grim mill town. But despite their grey pasts they long for a bright future—Jeanne by creating stunning dresses for her clients with the help of her sister Peggy’s brilliant sketches. Together, they combine forces to create amazing fashions and a more prosperous life than they’d ever dreamed of before the war. But sisterly love can sometimes turn into sibling jealousy. Always playing second fiddle to her sister, Peggy yearns to make her own mark. But as they soon discover, the future is never without its surprises, ones that have the potential to make—or break—their dreams.

Book I Had a Favorite Dress

Download or read book I Had a Favorite Dress written by Boni Ashburn and published by Abrams. This book was released on 2011-10-01 with total page 44 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Open up a fresh and stylish story about growing up and keeping hold of your favorite memories. As the year passes, the narrator’s favorite dress goes through a series of creative changes, from dress to shirt to tank top to scarf and so on, until all that’s left of it is a good memory. Assisted by her patient and crafty mama, the narrator finds that when disaster strikes her favorite things, she doesn’t need to make mountains out of molehills—she “makes molehills out of mountains” instead! Structured around the days of the week, the story is also illustrated to show the passing of the seasons, a perfect complement to the themes of growing older and keeping hold (and letting go) of special mementos. Praise for I Had a Favorite Dress "A spunky story about adjusting to change with creativity and style. Tailor-made, so to speak, for the Etsy generation of DIY enthusiasts.” –Publishers Weekly “Everyone is smiling in the buoyant confections created by illustrator Julia Denos—including, it’s fair to say, young readers looking at them. Endearing picture book.” –Wall Street Journal “What could have been yet another example of kindergarten consumerism instead becomes one of resourcefulness and resilience.” –New York Times “Denos’s multimedia illustrations reinforce the narrator’s vibrant personality and the amazing transformations of the dress while capturing the action and emotion of the story. This book is sure to capture the imaginations of would-be seamstresses; children who can’t bear to part with a favorite item; and those who want to reduce, reuse, recycle.” –School Library Journal “Breezy in style, they smartly stitch each scene of alteration as the not-so-little girl sashays through the days of the week and the seasons. A charming interpretation of an old story that will speak to young fashionistas.” –Kirkus Reviews
