I was reminded that the stories our grandparents told not only entertained us, they taught us valuable lessons. “The magic of storytelling is still with us. At home or in the classroom, stories such as these will spark the imagination and encourage reading.”—Rudolfo Anaya, author of Bless Me, Ultima The popular cuentos that parents and grandparents in rural New Mexico once upon a time told their children are a rich source of the folklore of the region and offer satisfying entertainment. In this collection of bilingual stories about the Río Puerco Valley, where Nasario García grew up, he shares the traditions, myths, and stories of his homeland. He recounts stories of the evil eye and rooster racing, the Wailing Woman and the punishing of the santos. Preceding each tale is García’s brief explanation of the history and culture behind the story.
Download or read book Animal Tales from the Caribbean written by George List and published by Indiana University Press. This book was released on 2017-09-11 with total page 269 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Traditional stories from the northern Colombian coast, in both English and Spanish. These twenty-one animal tales from the Colombian Caribbean coast represent a sampling of the traditional stories that are told during all-night funerary wakes. The tales are told in the semi-sacred space of the patio (backyard) of homes as part of the funerary ritual that includes other aesthetic and expressive practices such as jokes, song games, board games, and prayer. In this volume these stories are situated within their performance contexts and represent a highly ritualized corpus of oral knowledge that for centuries has been preserved and cultivated by African-descendant populations in the Americas. Ethnomusicologist George List collected these tales throughout his decades-long fieldwork among the rural costeños, a chiefly African-descendent population, in the mid-twentieth century and, with the help of a research team, transcribed and translated them into English before his death in 2008. In this volume, John Holmes McDowell and Juan Sebastián Rojas E. have worked to bring this previously unpublished manuscript to light, providing commentary on the transcriptions and translations, additional cultural context through a new introduction, and further typological and cultural analysis by Hasan M. El-Shamy. Supplementing the transcribed and translated texts are links to the original Spanish recordings of the stories, allowing readers to follow along and experience the traditional telling of the tales for themselves.
Download or read book Uncle Rabbit and the Wax Doll written by Jonathan D. Amith and published by Deep Vellum Publishing. This book was released on 2024-05-07 with total page 233 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Follow the classic tale of the trickster Brer Rabbit in a one-of-a-kind trilingual edition, featuring Nahuatl, Spanish, and English languages alongside traditional amate bark paintings. Uncle Rabbit has been gazing longingly at a garden across the river where his favorite foods are planted. Finally, he tricks Old Man Crocodile into giving him a ride to the other side of the river, only to find that he has bitten off more than he can chew! Uncle Rabbit and the Wax Doll beautifully recounts a Nahuatl version of Brer Rabbit, one of the most widespread tales of both the Old and New Worlds, in three languages. Told by master storyteller Silvestre Pantaleón and illustrated on amate bark paper by Inocencio Jiménez, a self‐taught artist from the same village in Guerrero, Mexico, this book tells the story of trickster Uncle Rabbit as he cleverly makes fools out of his eternal adversaries: Old Man Crocodile and Uncle Coyote. Presented here in Nahuatl alongside English and Spanish translations of the story, Uncle Rabbit and the Wax Doll shares a beloved tale with intercultural meaning alongside unique, detailed bark paintings and a Nahuatl-English glossary.
