  • Author : Joseph Norman Crew
  • Publisher :
  • Release : 2014-10-13

  • Pages : 342 pages

Download or read book Fall In Fall Out written by Joseph Norman Crew and published by . This book was released on 2014-10-13 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Son, The Army Will Make A Man Out Of You At seventeen years old, and with parental permission, Joseph Crew and his identical twin brother, Richard, enlisted in the army in 1958. Their destination was the Third Armored Division in Germany-the same outfit Elvis Presley had been recently assigned to. Their parents were in the beginning stages of divorce, and Joseph and his brother were looking to escape the domestic warfare. Fall In, Fall Out is Joseph's memoir, set against the backdrop of a pre Civial Rights, racially integrated army, charged to protect Western Europe from Russia's hostile, overwhelming might during the deepening freeze of the Cold War. The book is about friendships, sexual discovery, racial tensions, and the heartbreak of young love. It starkly depicts barracks life and bleak war game maneuvers, and brings to life the flesh trade in a Mexican border town; the nightclubs of Copenhagen; the seedy streets of Amsterdam's red-light district; and the glittering neon lights of Paris and Frankfurt-offering a glimpse of what those cities were like thirteen years after the defeat of Nazi Germany. Based on hastily scribbled yet carefully preserved writings from the last six months of Joseph's military service, Fall In, Fall Out skillfully brings history to life. But it's also a coming-of-age story about two brothers struggling to become men-a touching tale resurrected from the ashes of memory.

Book Dogface Soldier

    Book Details:
  • Author : Wilson A. Heefner
  • Publisher : University of Missouri Press
  • Release : 2010-05-05
  • ISBN : 0826272126
  • Pages : 397 pages

Download or read book Dogface Soldier written by Wilson A. Heefner and published by University of Missouri Press. This book was released on 2010-05-05 with total page 397 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On July 11, 1943, General Lucian Truscott received the Army's second-highest decoration, the Distinguished Service Cross, for valor in action in Sicily. During his career he also received the Army Distinguished Service Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster, the Navy Distinguished Service Medal, the Legion of Merit, and the Purple Heart. Truscott was one of the most significant of all U.S. Army generals in World War II, pioneering new combat training methods—including the famous “Truscott Trot”— and excelling as a combat commander, turning the Third Infantry Division into one of the finest divisions in the U.S. Army. He was instrumental in winning many of the most important battles of the war, participating in the invasions of North Africa, Sicily, Anzio, and southern France. Truscott was not only respected by his peers and “dogfaces”—common soldiers—alike but also ranked by President Eisenhower as second only to Patton, whose command he took over on October 8, 1945, and led until April 1946. Yet no definitive history of his life has been compiled. Wilson Heefner corrects that with the first authoritative biography of this distinguished American military leader. Heefner has undertaken impressive research in primary sources—as well as interviews with family members and former associates—to shed new light on this overlooked hero. He presents Truscott as a soldier who was shaped by his upbringing, civilian and military education, family life, friendships, and evolving experiences as a commander both in and out of combat. Heefner’s brisk narrative explores Truscott’s career through his three decades in the Army and defines his roles in key operations. It also examines Truscott’s postwar role as military governor of Bavaria, particularly in improving living conditions for Jewish displaced persons, removing Nazis from civil government, and assisting in the trials of German war criminals. And it offers the first comprehensive examination of his subsequent career in the Central Intelligence Agency, where he served as senior CIA representative in West Germany during the early days of the Cold War, and later as CIA Director Allen Dulles’s deputy director for coordination in Washington. Dogface Soldier is a portrait of a man who earned a reputation for being honest, forthright, fearless, and aggressive, both as a military officer and in his personal life—a man who, at the dedication ceremony for the Anzio-Nettuno American cemetery in 1945, turned away from the crowd and to the thousands of crosses stretching before him to address those buried there. Heefner has written a definitive biography of a great soldier and patriot.

Book excerpt: Think of the U.S. Marines and you’ll naturally think of the peerless ground force that has always bravely answered America’s call to arms. But the Marines also have an air arm with a tradition every bit as proud and legendary as the ground infantry they support. Now, military historian Robert F. Dorr presents the first fully illustrated, oral history of the Marine Air Wing, and gives the “Flying Leathernecks” the recognition they deserve. When America entered World War I in 1917, the Marine Air Wing had only thirty-five aviators. During World War II, it expanded to sixty-one squadrons—twenty with at least one flying ace—and over 10,000 pilots. Marine Air is a long-overdue, illustrated history, filled with the Flying Leathernecks’ own words and packed with photographs, of the “the few, the proud” of the skies, and of their unwavering commitment to protecting their comrades on the ground, and to defending the country they have never let down—no matter what the odds.

Book I ll Get By

Download or read book I ll Get By written by Harry Marlin and published by Trafford Publishing. This book was released on 2011-09 with total page 981 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Author Harry Marlin met everything in life head on. This collection of his writing explores a lifetime's experiences-growing up in tiny Blanket, Texas, during the Great Depression; flying combat missions over Germany during World War II; and managing life's perplexities. Called the "Will Rogers of Central Texas," Marlin wrote a weekly column for the Brownwood Bulletin for eleven years. I'll Get By presents the first volume of compilations of his best stories taking a humorous look at a plethora of topics. "The Barbecue Smokes, but the Customers Can't" explores the ins and outs of the Texas tradition of barbecuing. In "Where Summer's Lovely Roses Still Bloom," Marlin reminisces about the dreadful summers spent picking cotton. "The Place They Didn't Catch Clyde Barrow" describes how the news of Bonnie and Clyde running rampant in 1934 took the edge off of an otherwise depressing existence. Colorful and witty, I'll Get By provides insights into life in rural Texas during the Great Depression and shows that humor can provide relief in many challenging situations.

Book The Fighting First

  • Publisher : Basic Books

  • ISBN : 0786738685
  • Pages : 402 pages

Download or read book The Fighting First written by Flint Whitlock and published by Basic Books. This book was released on 2009-04-29 with total page 402 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Fighting First tells the untold story of the 1st Infantry Division's part in the D-Day invasion of France at Normandy. Using a variety of primary sources, official records, interviews, and unpublished memoirs by the veterans themselves, author Flint Whitlock has crafted a riveting, gut-wrenching, personal story of courage under fire. Operation Overlord - the Allied invasion of Normandy on 6 June 1944 - was arguably the most important battle of World War II, and Omaha Beach was the hottest spot in the entire operation. Leading the amphibious assault on the "Easy Red" and "Fox Green" sectors of Omaha Beach was the U.S. Army's 1st Infantry Division - "The Big Red One" - a tough, swaggering outfit with a fine battle record. The saga of the Big Red One, however, did not end with the storming of the beachhead. The author concludes with an account of the 1st in their fight across France, Belgium, and into Germany itself, playing pivotal roles in the bloody battles for Aachen, the Huertgen Forest, and the Battle of the Bulge. The Fighting First is an inspiring, graphic, and often heartbreaking story of young American soldiers performing their D-Day missions with spirit, humor, and determination.
